I would like to see one or two non-humanoid alien species added to GalCiv3, why I appreciate that the lore gives an explanation of why most species are humanoid is it impossible for any non-humanoid to be sentient in the GalCiv universe.
I don’t count Thalan’s as non-humanoid by the way as just doing a humanoid with funny backwards looking arms doesn’t really count in my opinion. I seem to remember them being less humanoid in GC2 or am I wrong?
However how about adding a few more exotic species?
What about a Mollusc like life form that evolved on a low G world? As one example after all we know Mollusc’s can be highly intelligent as Cephalopods show. This is just one example.
Why four limbs? Why Bilateral Symmetry? There are so many possibilities that could be explored.
Sadly I think Stardock have always preferred the man in the rubber suit style of aliens, the one thing I didn’t like about GC2.
Regardless of what Stardock decide I intend to start work on a non-humanoid species mod for GC3 as it’s something I have lots of ideas for and I really think would be refreshing.
wtfbbq?
People in general likes things that they can recognize and/or feel related too. While some few people may feel attached to giant-bacteria-like life forms, most people won't. Except as some kind of creepy monster (like The Blob... any version of the movie). So if you want your readers/players to feel some kind of empathic feelings about those "aliens", in general, something familiar is needed*. Plus creating lifeform shapes that make sense? Not realistic task for some developers/writers. And they would be limited to "what we know" mixed with some fiction.
I don't mind one way or another if races are all humanoid, insectoid or whatever. Having stuff that breaks the norm is nice but whatever. A fiction land based 4X would take that more seriously. But a fiction 4x game in space? With no realistic** tactical ground combat? Who cares about the "biology" or realistic** possibilities of their existance? As long as they are consistent in their presentation/lore/background, it's fine.
* and cheaper if you are creating some kind of Trek series back in the day...
**
Edit:
Non-Humanoid races would be a welcome addition to the game, either as minor or major races. I think you could have some fun with that and give them some unique technologies as a result of their different body style.
Tergon chopping up post word for word is a bad way to communicate. Usually it means your mad not fully listening to what people are saying and are being a bully like you are now. You never mentioned what darca was saying about thre points instead you ranted about fate and him instead of facts, that's just wrong.
you are missing the word rendition. He was saying animals when used look more like humans. An the racon came from parogonrenagade bty and you missed the point there to.
look in the dictionary for the definition of fate. Its like stuff that happens its not a god or does it actuly relate to gratifying people. I believe thing happen for a reason either sientific or godly or whatever. Quit being a jerk.
I am really saprised how much pointless anger you packed into your post. None of his paraphrase quots and your responses match up right. Wow. Your trolling.
Random insults show only that you have no real logical argument to support your position.
It's harder than just sticking a wrinkley forehead on someone certainly but many sci-fi writters have indeed come up with alternative morphologies, life cycles, etc. You are concluding form this that if you find something hard to imagine it can't exist, belive it or not there was a time when people found it very hard to imagine that the world was not flat because common sense and their limited experience made it obvious that it was. Your failure of imagination does not necassarily set limits on the universe nor on other peoples imagination.
This is an oddity in your thinking, you consider it more creative only to think about humanoids than to consider other life forms. As to your other point here please tell me which earth life form the primes from the common wealth saga resemble? Also extrapolation of a feature of a kingdom, phyllum or genuis does not make an alien a direct copy.
Apparently only impossoble for you I'm afraid it's been done many times in science fiction.
You also still haven't told me what your definition of humanoid by the way.
Or how you extrapolate that evolution will always produce ~ the same results on any and all planets capable of supporting life, which is your argument that since only humanoids have technology on earth (not 100% true since some members of the crow familly can and do make tools), is a conculsive argument that only humanoids could ever do this.
What industry do you work in DARCA?
*Grabs popcorn*
Oh boy, here we go.
Everyones got to have a hobby, in my case trying to reason with DARCA , besides until we get that demo or the first beta or something else to talk about there isn't much else to do on these forums.
You could talk about the new feedback Frogboy added to the Vault.
Really I hadn't looked yet today. Ok consider me gone to the vault.
That's some intense feedback.
I can't wait to see DARCA's opinion :3
You can't read, can you econundrum1? You like trolling and its because your bored you can instigate and bend words to your will.
Am I the only one thinking this thread would be better off dead and buried?
Before it inevitably happens I would like to talk to econundrum1 through steam. Would you kindly PM me your dream id or friend me on steam so we can discuss this...topic.
DARCA
Not bad for someone who can't read. But no Actually having a degree in biological science and an interest in A-Life simulations and AI I enjoy discussing the nature of intelligence and speculative biology based on a proper understanding of evolution, it's interesting to discuss when I see illogical arguments I feel compelled to point out the lack of logic.
That said I feel I've made my points so if no ones interested in discussing this further I'll let it drop.
I didn't have to relate to the yor to enjoy playing them, and it's not like glaciv doesn't already copy everything else from star control
No, it tells what is being responded to. Only a fool answers wall of text with another wall of text without reference to what is being answered in each place.
I was responding to a fool who stated how only humanoid creatures could ever become starfaring species and then spoke of faith.
Fate is stupidity where people believe that something is meant to happen when in reality it is just odd coincidence at work.
I am surprised by how useless post you made. And if you cannot match up then you just have not read properly. You apparently do not grasp that there are missing posts in the thread, but if you pay attention you can figure it out.
Still waiting for Darca to support his point that only humanoids can be species with ability to develop technology for interstellar travel.
You can screw yourself Tergon. I made my points very clear. Points that everyone I know who has a background in fiction of any kind agrees with.
Look up the definition. Naw you love your ignorance too much, so here.
1The development of events beyond a person’s control, regarded as determined by a supernatural power:
1.1The course of someone’s life, or the outcome of a particular situation for someone or something, seen as beyond their control:
the part of fate people over look alot is the past. You can't change the events in the past leading up to our present time. One outcome, all leading to the present. Unchanging because it is everything that does anything.
To be even clearer. Everything is the way it was fucking meant to be. That's Fate.
Lol, its not like you can argue that the past of all existence never really happened and has nothing to do with us now, that would be crazy.
DARCA.
Then why do you eat and breathe trough the same hole!? this just means some percentage will choke to death. there is a whole slew of design flaws in evolved beings, due to the way evolution works. And that's before even addressing the fact that we can't interact with many "advanced" things such as radiation, or truly understand/imagine "advanced" things like time, distance and physics on scales just a few orders of magnitude larger or smaller then everyday life.
A humanoid shape is not the only form that can achieve a technological society.
More senses then the human ones have evolved on earth alone and much more often then just once. Eyesight has evolved like 7 different times independently of each other on earth, some animals can see more then 3 colors, bats use echolocation instead of light. Bugs use pheromones with their senses. Octopus are very dextrous while they don't have opposable thumbs. Cats have whiskers they use as a sense. Dogs can navigate by smell. There are plenty of examples of creatures that do not use sight as their primary sense but that function just fine, and there are also many specialized appendages to interact with things.
All these things are happening just on earth alone. How hard is it to imagine one of these other creatures evolved to become sapient instead of our ancestor? Sure if it was a mammal it would probably have ended up with a humanoid shape, but it might aswell have been a bird or water based creature.
Now imagine all of this happening with DNA that has 3 base pairs instead of 2.
Now imagine all of this happening with something that does the same as DNA but isn't DNA.
Now imagine all of this happening based on silicon or a even more exotic element instead of carbon.
Now imagine all of this happening on another planet, with different gravity, solar radiation, atmosphere, atmospheric pressure, season length, etc.
Is it really that hard to imagine something that doesn't have 2 arms 2 legs and a head that walks up right and grows its children inside a internal womb comes out of it?
there i replied now give me the cookies you promised.
am i the only one to make a parallel between existing GC2 aliens and classical heroic fantasy races?
Dregin? orcs from space
Korath? meaner orcs from space (who like Torture Magazine)
Altarians? elves from space (elve babes more accurately)
Yor? undead from space
Torian? aquatic gnomes from space
Iconian? illithids from space
Arcean? nice elder guys from space (well... mostly)
Krynn? lizardmen thieves from space
Drath? draconian from space
Thalan? eeh... this one not sure... freaks from space??
Well, more seriously, i think any race design with an ability to manipulate tools qualifies for space conquest. This ability being physical (hands), mental (psionics) or historically acquired (imagine humans provide dolphins with cybernetics to control machines, then dolphins create their own machines to provides cybernetics to all dolphins in the world, declare war to humans, annihilate the pretentious apes and become a major threat to galactic peace => we must kill dolphins before it's too late!!!)
This because i can't really believe in a organic creature able to channel the energy, navigation capability and thoughness necessary for space travel.
That said, even if a race doesn't use tools, it doesn't really matter since as Wintersong said, the only real thing that matter is that they fit well in the story (see the Zergs for example as someone suggest already).
For example, the cruel Muppetshowers led by Supreme General Kermit and the Evil Empress Piggy DO NOT fit well in the quite serious background of GC
Actually, your points are load of shit none of them somehow are ones that can only exist in humanoid form.
And if "everyone you know with background in fiction" agrees, either you know nobody, or know handful of idiots or their "background in fiction" is about as deep as papersheet.
Past is not fate moron. Past is past. Fate is something that is to be happen, your definition agrees on this.
For something to be because it was meant to be means that there is someone/something that says that things must be this way.
This is idiotic, as there is zero evidence of such powers existence.
Dude, screw off. There is bigger shit in life right now I have to worry about and all this is meaningless. If I could go back in time I wouldn't have spent hours on this but spent more time with my family.
GS2 allowed you to create races and if you had a pic to add you could make what ever race you wanted. I stopped using the oficial races a long time ago because I had created many different races and only used those.
I'm assuming we would be able to do that in GS3
You are. It is an interesting and fun thread to read. If it upsets you then you can simply stop reading it.
Reading through this thread made me think up an alien.
So, It's kind of like a nautilus where the shell has 4 insect like legs. The shell and the nautilus type thing are two separate animals but born together with connected brains so that they share a nervous system, the 2 beings work as one. The actual nautilus fleshy bit has 6 large tentacles which are used to manipulate objects. They are also land based and are about the size of a large dog.
This pretty much confirms that anyone with some imagination can think of one.
