Hi everyone!
Like all of you, I'm a true lover of galactic civilization since the second opus, and a fan of turn-based 4X games since my childhood who played at least half of all games released since (I'm not kidding). And GalCiv III looks soooo much like a good upgrade of GalCiv II that I had to support it.
However, I'm a bit worrying now that the "names your star" award, which is an EXCELLENT initiative IMHO, really, is going to give awkward results.
I mean, when I play a 4X, whether it is a spiritual heir of Master of Orion, Master of magic or Civ I, I want to be immersed in the universe of the game, and feel like a real galactic emperor, great wizard or king. I love to imagine great stories around my game, etc... and I fear that some names suggested are REALLY breaking the immersion.
Ok, GalCiv is not a "serious" 4X franchise. With distances between planets being roughly only a quarter of distances between stars, the galactic map is one of the least realistic one ever displayed in 4X games... But surprisingly, that give to the game a very special and unique atmosphere, that I love.
But I worry that some of the names accepted for stars will really ruin this nice athmosphere. I have nothing against strange name, and I find really fun Sci-fi/fantasy references (yeah, Cthulhu!), historical (Armstrong ^^), or smart joke (can't wait to see the dreaded "Imastar" finally accepted!). But really, that will be a PAIN to see stupid things like "IslandDog" or "Tassadarpaladin"... Really, was it too much to censor names that are obvious 2 or 3 words in English and don't sound like name at all? I'm maybe an old dumbass, yeah, but I hate that. Really. Also, I'm a bit skeptic about names like "THAILAND"...but I'll try to open my chakras and to be more tolerant...
I'm the only one that would call for just a bit more of censorship?
I agree 100%
I have seen some really dumb names. I would hate to see someone ruin a theme just because they paid a few extra dollars.
Please consider censoring the really dumb ones.
You realize that IslandDog is the screen name of an employee of Stardock, and does a great job. I cannot see why a name like that cannot be accepted. I'm sure if you donate 1 million dollars to an astronomer a year, he would let you name a star what ever you like and it would be historically recorded as such. Who knows, there might be stars named this way when we begin to travel space better.
FYI, he wouldn't have any censoring on his star name. At least they do censor some names that go through, but IslandDog, I'd be glad to see... or even Tassadarpaladin.
........
If you see something you don't like just change the name and quit complaining about other peoples choices they think are fun and paid money for. please.
DARCA
You can always mod/ change your own xml files
edit: Ah to slow
Actually, you should see some of the ones I have rejected. People need to be unique in their names, and if they put a word or two together, so be it. Is it really that big of deal?
Btw looking at some files i found in the original planetText.xml:
<StringTable>
<Label>Epas_Name</Label> <String>Po</String> </StringTable>
and then:
<Label>Po_Name</Label> <String>Po</String> </StringTable>
I will have final editorial say on star names. So "SmellyFart453" isn't likely to make the cut.
...
From the whole list of dumb names, of course I choose the one which is a nice tribute ^^'. Dat luck...
All my apologies for Island Dog, no intention of offending him ^^. Even if it still sounds weird for a star...
Okay, i'll try to be a constructive dumbass tonight. Two propositions:
- Definitely, that's sad you don't allow space for names in several words. Many of these names would look better this way.
- For people that don't like to mod extensively their game, especially names, would you add a little option in the configuration panel to switch off backers stars name, and have only "standard" ones? that should hurt nobody and improve the experience of people that like "serious" naming.
No worries, I thought it was funny.
I wished i though of that one.
Is that because of the numbers or does the name just stink?
Nothing wrong with names that give tribute. There are quite a few in real life I would think!
"Imastar" never heard of it. wheres it from?
My star name is perfect for Elites and non-Elites alike.
It's true that some of the names raise eyebrows but whatever.
You don't say
What might be nice is a option for those that don't want unique star names to turn off 'star names' in the gameplay tab. Not me, I'm up for anything.
Poor IslandDog... harsh
lolz
cheers for having a sense of humor!
I don't mind the names. You probably won't even notice while playing. I wanted to submit "AWESOM-O" but it doesn't meet the guidelines.
My only worry is that IslandDog will be rendered "Islanddog" in game per the guidelines
I hope my star-name makes it (Eggar). I don't care if the star appears in some backwater anal-gland of a star system, it will be pretty cool to see the Developers accept this level of input from the community. I for one really appreciate that!
<sarcasm> Hey which idiot named their star "Barnard"!!!!! RAAAGGEEEE </sarcasm>
The names have to come from somewhere. Besides editing your own files to remove names you find distracting, you could perhaps assume that the "unusual" star names are simply English literal translations of the star names from some alien tongue. Perhaps they have naming conventions more in line Native American names, or use a form of constellation naming - this would happily explain why a star might be called IslandDog - its just those crazy Altarians!
r.
I've looked through the list and I really don't see any that jump out as obviously bad to me. There are some very interesting ones in there. Maybe a few that are "meh" or are too human-centric, but nothing that would get me up in arms over.
For the love of all that is holy please post all the rejected names!
Double posting fail.
Some of them could be unfit to post on a public forum for those under the tender age of 70?
