Hi all,
I kind of got into Sins of a Solar Empire a few years ago. I mean played it some and enjoyed it, but I never played it enough to get past the learning curve. I think part of the problem was that I played on my laptop and without a mouse. So i think i recall navigation being a pain for me... lol Its been awhile. And I kept wanting to compare it to BOTF; which was an amazing game that I still occasionally play today!!!
Do you think this new game will still have the same type of game play versus Sins? Or will it be a little more smooth? What are greatest improvements you guys think there will be?
I looked at buying Distant Worlds awhile ago, but that would have required me building a new computer... (i already have an i7 with 8bg ram... lol) I liked the very in depth open world though. I'm more about the game play, than I am about the graphics. The screenshots look sweet for GC3 though! I wish the video would have showed a little bit of game play.
There are only a handful of game titles that i really play. And since I'm not going to pay $15/month for Elder Scrolls Online, COD is already getting old, Far Cry 4 is a long ways away, and Command & Conquer looks iffy, so i'm looking for a game to fill that void... I am really stuck on if i should go for the purchase before March 2nd though.... Maybe play Sins again and see if that excitement comes back?
Thanks,
-Rich
an i7 is a brand, not a processor; there are i5-branded chips that are better than i7's in the desktop world and in the mobile world there are i3's better than some of them
that said this game is nothing like sins
sins was published but not developed by stardock and was a real-time not a turn-based strategy game (though there were some real-time aspects of galciv2)
as a decade-long stardock customer i can guarantee you they'll make it worth your $ - $40 isn't much of a risk
The GalCiv games do have a pretty steep learning curve if you've never played a 4X game before. However, the nice thing about them is you can take your time. I don't play Sins much because I don't like the pressure, LOL. I like a good TBS game where you can sit back, relax and take your time with your decisions. You can even drink beer while playing! Try playing Starcraft after a couple beers and see how far that gets you.
I highly recommend you get the GalCiv 2 Ultimate Edition on Steam. It's only 20 bucks and is still a phenomenal game. Then you will know if it's your thing before dropping more money on the new one.
Well from what I know I would say Galactic civilizations is easier to control because Real time is harder to manage. You can take all the time between turns. It's not so hard to learn. It's complex but play the tutorial. Control is not a problem because it is not Real time, and buy a mouse. It's not required for the game.
Thanks for the input. I guess i thought this was going to be like Sins, so i was a little turned off. But still interested. I plan on buying GalCiv2 Ultimate tonight. The more i'm reading about it and some of the much older forums that come up in the google results, it looks very similar to BOTF!
@ofRealmTruFaith: I thought that i7 was the type of processor and Intel was the brand and ivy bridge was the class? I have the first gen i7 to come out. but true many of the newer i3's are much faster than my i7.
$40 really isn't that much, since many newer games cost that, plus have in game stuff for sale or monthly dues...
@NelsMonsterX2: BOTF is a 4X game. there was a learning curve with understanding the game, but it was nice being able to go at my own pace! it made it feel much more strategic. much more time for drinking beer! lol
@admiralWillyWilber: i usually always play the tutorials for these games. helps out a lot! i have a better mouse now that works on fabric and even have a desk now, so i am ready to go! haha
i wish they would show a little bit of game footage before March 2nd though... just thought of this, I bet this game will look pretty cool hooked up to a big screen tv!
Yep, this is the same genre as Star Trek: Birth of the Federation. You can make some trekky ships with the ship creator, if you can get into it that is. It is easily a huge time waster, especially in the beginning. He he.

I am learning to use a program that will record whatever I am doing on my PC Win7 desktop. I will be recording what I do playing the 'beta' of GalCiv3. I will edit the recording and post (upload) to youtube (and here if there was a place?). SD permits this. So I will post a heads up here when the vid is ready. It won't be before 2 March 2014, sorry. However, based on SD's past record (excellent), Froggy's enthusiasm for gaming, and what I have already seen in the founder's vault - if you like GalCiv2, you will love GalCiv3.
i just bought into the founders $39.99 group!
Ok my thing on GalCivs II is it keeps crashing and I dont know why. Anyone have the same probs?
Details would help I have some reasons why. Have you updated drivers lately how new is your computer. What operating system are you using. There are updeates to the game have you installed. These could be problems. There are more, but I really need to know how you are playing. Like for instance have you heard of virtual memory.
Intel is the company, i7 is a brand, ivy bridge is the microarchitecture and 965 is the processor (most likely model, assuming you've truly got an original i7; see ark.intel.com/compare/37148,37147,37149 )
- brands are meaningless marketing things
- microarchitectures are microcode additions and modifications to binary-compatible macroarchitectures (IA32x64 or x86-64; "Intel 64" or 'EM64T') plus their lithography used [manufacturing process]
SHORTVERSION == microarchitecture = the specifications of the processing hardware which operating systems and other code must take into account to run optimally/efficiently on them and take advantage of their new features
- class generally refers to package, formfactor or socket i.e. LGA1366 or PBA986 (Land Grid Array tells you the packaging of the processor, the chipsets and thus motherboard formfactors and types on systes in which said processors can be installed etc)
if you learn Intel's nomenclature you can know almost every importance feature of a given processor by its model# (AMD has no such consistency) but its branding (i7, i5, i3, Pentium, Celeron, xeon, opteron, phenom, Athlon)
the only partial exception to this is with overclocking models - anything with {K, X, extreme, black, fx} in its name means you're paying more $ for less utility and warranty in exchange for the ability to get a few additional MHz per clock; DUMB idea (economically and technologically - makes you less efficient, less secure and less precise)
hope I've been clear? 't's my passion to inform people about technology and economics (probably part of why I enjoy GalCiv and appreciate StarDock as a company?)
thanks Realm! i consider myself pretty tech savy, but i did not know that nearly as in depth of you. i usually just go by socket and the price of the CPU. then i wait for prices to go down and upgrade to extreme if it works out. but i don't think it would be simple/possible or cost efficient to upgrade the CPU in my laptop... i'm more of a desktop guy... lol thanks again for the info!!!
no problem, richiemoe! I'm an IA\IT professional and have been for some time - even though i'm only almost 23

If your archetecture is Ivy bridge then your I7 has to be a third generation. The first generation I7 was sandy bridge or earlier you actually have a recent graphics archetecture. Ivy bridge is state of the art. Your processor has to be a third generation, or you don't have Ivy bridge.
thanks, i'll check out the site, Realm.
you are correct Willy. i was just using Ivy Bridge as an example. i'm looking into them for a new desktop. my laptop has "Quad i7-740QM". i think that is the first gen of i7.
