Greetings!
For those of you not familiar with our Elemental game universe here it is in brief:
Elemental is a fantasy world made up of many different civilizations vying for control the world. There is a great deal of history and lore to tap into and we decided to begin making games in this world back with 2010s release of War of Magic. Unfortunately, when it came out, it was pretty buggy and got some negative reviews. We fixed the bugs but the game itself was still pretty meh.
So in 2012, we released the second game in the Elemental universe called Fallen Enchantress which was good and we're pretty proud of that game. We followed it up with an expansion pack called Legendary Heroes that further refined the Fallen Enchantress game mechanics.
We do intend to follow Fallen Enchantress with a third strategy game in the Elemental universe but it'll be very different from either War of Magic or Fallen Enchantress as it focuses largely on, well I can't really go into that yet.
When Fallen Enchantress was released, we discontinued War of Magic. I don't think it's available for sale anywhere anymore. My question is, would anyone be interested in us revisiting War of Magic in the future to release a kind of "War of Magic: Director's Cut" or something where we refined the WOM game design, updated the visuals.
WOM had some interesting game mechanics such as a pretty big emphasis on a dynasty system and a number of other distinctive mechanics that could be refined further.
Let us know what you think. Would we be opening up "old wounds" or would be restoring faith to those who believed in the original "not-MOM" concept?
God, I hope not for right now. They need to focus on finishing some of what they have right now...
Just sayin.
I personally think it was, for what it's worth. I would totally buy it again if necessary, with updates in it and all. But, that's just me. And yes, I realize this thread has been quiet since October I think it was. Still, it's worth it enough to me that I feel like saying so here.
I would love to see a rebirth of War of Magic. While saying that its reception was bad is an understatement, I still think that a few more months of developement, more stability, more focus, and an improved AI would have produced one of the greatest 4X of all times.
WoM had this amasing feel of a barren and bleak world being "healed" by the player. It had this stylized look that gave the feel of playing inside the illustrations of a fantasy book. The cities were visually amazing. While all factions were humans, elves, dwarves and orcs were here, in disguise under their human skin. The dynasty system, while underdeveloped, was a great idea. All the systems of a fantasy Civlisations were here, just unfinished and unrefined.
Lastly, it had (at least for me) one elusive thing that it shared with MoM, the diversity, the feel of wonder.
With the initial reception to WoM being what it was, I think that Stardock's reaction was to cull the game through patches in order to stabilize its core. But in the same time it was sanitized, it lost something.
If a WoM return is comercially viable, please, make it happen !
I might go for it, eventually. Don't have a steam account, so would check reviews and wait for a GOG version.
No, I would rather you focus on a new game in the series, not revisit the oldest one.
I would rather the devs focus on their new upcoming fantasy 4x game with Ashes of the Singularity engine.
1. Keep the dynasty/family tree system from War of Magic
2. Crafting system from Sorceror King, but with improvements. Ex. Players buy items from shops but upgrade/enchant them with drops from enemies.
3. Hero System and unit design from Legendary Heroes.
4. World/Shard travel from Worlds of Magic.
5. Each faction with their own tech tree.
6. Each faction should play differently with their own mechanics such as Endless Legends. Two to three human factions, Elf, Demon/Chaos/Inferno, Orc, Undead factions. etc.
Take the good ideas from other 4x games and improve them.
YES!
To be very honest, I'd rather like to have a MoM upgrade instead - what EWoM was supposed to be at first. Like, the exact same game, just with today's graphics (but keeping the graphical design), more options and some rebalance and AI fixes. I'd pay a full-price AAA rate for this.
I loved the original EWoM. I probably played it more than any subsequent release except LH. I missed the dynasty system in future versions. I also miss the strategy involved with planning the actual city layout. I've been playing CivVI over the past several days and realize how much EWoM could have been a contender! I think it had a lot of very good strategy ideas that we're only now seeing in other games.
The world needs a WOM2. Make Fantasy Strategy (with some RPG elements) great again!
I think AzSam hit the nail on the head.WoM was very "new" and "fresh" feeling. It was like not only am I playing a new 4X, but it has entirely new and different gameplay and features than a typical one.WoM remake or WoM2 should capitolize on this. It needs to really stand out from a typical 4X, both visually and gameplay wise.Healing the barren wasteland was cool. Trying to get my dynasty going was cool. There should be more things like this. I want to feel like I am a little magic god who is forging his own destiny, both in landscape and in politics.
Depends on you.
YES!!!
I have just found Fallen Enchantress LE, and the first thing I thought was...I liked the original Elemental, would enjoy playing that again (some problem spots in game, but a DIRECTOR's CUT, YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.....................................
Seriously, that just isn't funny. Guy is a complete jerk, going to destroy world or at least the country. Not funny at all.
I am inclined to take the underlying engine updates from FE/Sorcerer King and apply them to WOM and release i as an Ultimate Edition.
WOM, I thought, was a good game, just too ambitious (code wise).
With man hours being limited. I think, and correct me if im wrong, the community would love work on more recent games than WOM. Endgame bosses or crises, as I keep pestering you about, would be amazing in FE or Galciv!
All the SK engine updates applied to FE:LH would be very welcome as well!
Definitely this!
Is there a real possibility of this happening? If you could do this, especially if you included the asymmetrical elements from Sorcerer King as options, plus its great crafting system, more quests and all that, I'd _LOVE_ to play such a game.
Hmmm, you still have not forgotten about this. That's... interesting. I still have that dragon figure came with my WOM collector's edition somewhere.....
WOM was actually better game compared to Sorcerer King (I am sorry to say, SK is really shallow game and I actually dislike the game very much.)
I still miss the system that initiative based on item weights and of course dynasty system. Stackable buildings that made cities possible to specialize, etc.
Still, there are a lot of good ideas from subsequent expansion packs, I don't think it would be good idea to preserve WOM's original system at this point.
But you know, I really think the game engine is still what holds the game no matter what. I barely played Sorcerer King so I really have no clue about the performance, but what I heard are not kind unfortunately. I am not sure how much you can bring improvements from the current updated SK engine.
next thing you know, someone will say dig up the stuff from the old drawing board, take ashes engine and make (parts of) it real time..
I'm still waiting for the promised update to FH:LE that makes it playable again. Nice job pushing out 2.0; introducing the Stamina System while breaking most of the existing Mods, numerous bugs making the game undesirable to play. I was in a headspace to work on Mods again, but not going to happen with the current state of the game.
Yesssss. That's exactly what I was hoping you'd do mate!
I know this is an old post but I think about War of Magic all the time. It is the only game that is an RPG with a Total War like dynastic system. (Wildermyth doesn't count cause you have no control over what you children look like/ what class they are/ what color they are I had a black kid from 2 white parents....)
At least sell it again via digital or on gog..
