I dont know, how do you feel about this, but personally i always considered the available factions the single most important aspect of strategy games. I guess one may consider the scope of the game scale-wise and orientation toward either micro or macro to be even more important aspect, but nevertheless, the factions are very important, because psychologically they are all about identity.
Since the start of my gaming career i played quite a lot of strategy games, mostly RTSes, as they are my preference. It is for sure, that few of those games i liked, despite their factions felt sort of meh, cause i found them either not interesting enough, or not diverse/unique enough. But at the same time i think it its safe to say, my fav RTS games were the ones with factions, i considered exciting to just think about, not to mention play. Be it for their gameplay mechanics, which fit my playstyle, or rather what i basically see as cool, or for their cool and interesting units, sometimes purely from aesthetical POV ( i liked their looks LOL). Usually, it is/was the combination of these factors. Perhaps the most notable exception to this rule is Homeworld, which i liked mostly for its superb single-player campaign and overall artistic presentation.
Over the years i realized i usually tend to pick the alternative to the main faction of the game. If there are more than 2 factions (usually 3 or 4), i tend to go for the third or the last one. It largely depends on their characteristics, but these factions seem to be universally the ones, i find for some reason compelling - these factions tend to focus more on a finesse, high-tech or unique stuff, rather than brute-force or some standard generic units, and this i find appeasing.
Lastly, obviously based on the previous paragraph, i believe there is a pattern in how factions in games are designed, clearly there are certain tropes (starcraft being the model one), which the game-designers usually follow, even though sometimes these are bit mixed to achieve at least some impression of variety and novelty. I guess i think this is an approach, which works quite nicely, even though sometimes bit more of an innovation would not hurt. Anyway, Sins itself is a good example of this approach, while its factions certainly differ enough from those in StarCraft or other similar games, there is a lot of stuff there you would expect to be exactly the way, it is. TEC for example, despite being somewhat modeled as the zerg-like faction with their cheap units and strong sway toward economy/production, are visually the quintessential Terran faction. Basically no surprises there.
One game i found a bit weird in this regard, was Universe at War. Ultimately it was not a bad game, and i liked its visual design, but the factions...were completely uninteresting to me. Only the mechs of Hierarchy were somewhat cool... but other than that? No proper aircraft, naval units or space-ships, just bunch of generic troops or drones/hovercraft. And then some weird fantasy-like faction with no visually appealing stuff? No, thank you.
The other games i´d like to mention:
Dune 2 - my first RTS games. The factions were not really diverse enough, so i did not have clear favourite. Probably Harkonnen cause of the Rise of the Harkonnen song, lol. And i like red color.
Warcraft 2 - detto. Was a great game and i loved its graphics, but the factions were not particularly unique.
Warcraft 3 - found myself playing for the Night Elves (3rd of 4 factions) for some reason. Humans and Orcs were meh, generic and boring, while Undead looked cool, but i dunno, did not fit me well.
Age of Empires series - too many nations with not enough differences IMHO. Be it gameplay-wise or visually. Few specific units based on history were not enough. I missed the Age 3 datadisc though, which apparently added some cool and unique stuff/mechanics and improved the diversity a lot. Otherwise, safe to say, not a big fan of Age series.
Starcraft 1/2 - Protoss for their high tech stuff and orientation on air units. I was fond of Terrans as well, the only faction i was not really into, were Zerg. Organic bio-shit does not excite me one bit, i guess. Carriers or Battlecruisers are where its at. Ultimately not really a game for me though, as it caters to competitive players and their preference for 10 minute long matches, almost sports-like. I need immersion and epicness.
Command and Conquer - Never really liked GDI, nor NOD. Classic game with boring factions. Lack of air units, no navy. GDI the most generic modern-warfare faction ever, NOD weird, not terrorist-like at all, with weird, rather than cool units. Red Alert so much better.
CnC3 - Scrin, obviously, since never liked other 2 factions. And i actually liked looks of their stuff and they had lot of cool units, like Annihilator Tripods, those Airborne Carriers and Mothership! Hell yeah.
Red Alert - The first one was the best IMHO. I wonder which faction would you consider to be main of the 2? Allies clearly the western one, but the game was called Red Alert, so to me the Soviets were the default one. Pretty sure their brute force approach appeased to majority of players as well. Not me though, LOL. Cruisers, Spy Satellites, Gap generators, Chronospheres - that was my thing. I remained Allied player for the other 2 games as well, since they added some cool air units, like for example Century bomber or Vindicator.
Generals/Zero Hour - i guess the US were the main faction, and they were my fav, So to certain extent, this was different, meant as the main faction was a high-tech one here. Zero Hour was even better, I loved Air Force General the most. Death from Above ffs. But the other factions in these games were cool as well. Diversity at its finest.
Dawn of War series - I was never much into Warhammer, so i hesitated to give it a try at first. Eventually i found out its pretty good game and for some time, played it a lot with my buddy. But its true i did not really have fav faction, the game itself was great for its gameplay, but the factions, were meh. I played for Chaos at first, as they were opposite to the Space Marines and their Cultists were hilarious with all the "Chaos is strong" hehe. With Dark Crusade coming out i moved to Necrons and they were way more exciting, Tau were cool as well, with all their great machinery, gunships and shit, but my buddy already chose them, so i went with Crons. Not that i regret, their ressurectable units and the summonable C´Tan god were too cool. And the best of all - the Monolith! Best HQ building ever!
Supreme Commander - cool game, factions not unique enough for me to choose, despite all having exciting air and naval units. I guess in original game i prefered Aeon, since they seemed to be most navy-oriented, while in the SupCom 2 i played more for Cybrans, mostly for cosmetic reasons. I guess walking ships might have something to do with it, Not that i like them, conceptually, actually i thought walking ships are the worst idea ever. But they worked quite fine.
Conquest Frontier Wars - I played Celareons. Was bit unhappy with their lack of fighters/carriers, but i liked their shiny ice/water like ships, reminding me of Taelon stuff from the Earth-Final Conflict TV show. And they had great defenses, Proteus Missile Platform, Hydrofoil AA Defense, Starburst. And how about fleet of cloaked Auroras backdooring via Portal artificial wormhole into enemy home system, fuck yeah! Brilliant game this.
Earth 2160 - the Aliens over anyone else. Their unique cloning mechanic was fun to play. And their huge Postomor Battlecruisers ravaging enemy bases...yes please.
Company of Heroes - good game, but prefered Dawn of War lot more. Neither Allies or ze Germans were really interesting, cause of the game focus on small infantry/tank skirmishes. Differences between factions IMHO too subtle. But i never played it enough to judge it deeper.
Sins/Rebellion - clearly Vasari fan here. From the first moment. Vasari Loyalists probably my most fav faction in any game i played, since the other factions dont really have anything, i would terribly miss playing for them. In Red Alert for example playing for Allies i wished i had Soviet Migs, no such situation occurs here. The only exception being perhaps VR jumping bases. Does not mean other races dont have some cool stuff themselves. But i am simply totally cool with how VL were designed. Not to mention i liked the looks of their units the most. Especially the quintet of Vorastra - Kortul - Vulkoras - Ruiner - Orkulus does it for me. Keep these in Sins II please!
These are the most notable games i played and have opinion on them, What are yours? What do you like, prefer? Be it in these games i mentioned, or some others, you personally favour? Or generally speaking? I am eager to hear.
I don't write as well as you so I'll keep it simple.
1.Sins: Only play as TEC as their the most human, I fact never in my 5 years of Sins have I played Vasari,or Advent. (Don't want to get familiar with my enemy.) Really wish there was another cool looking ship human side....I like my ships to have doors and windows, some of the vasari an advent ships are to weird for me.( both their carriers for example).
2.Loved Company...just doesn't have the replay of Sins.(No map feels repeated as there are no tree's)lol.
But didn't pick up CH2 cause it was Soviet specific.
3. Loved Generals...
Like my RTS's a little slower paced also...I'm getting old..
So basically always play as the boring white guy(who speaks English)...with the coolest ships...
Faction appeal is also a big factor for me. The "feel" of the right faction - from their graphic design, voice acting, abilities, strengths/weaknesses, fun factor, etc - affects my inspiration in playing with them. It's also why I never got into Company of Heroes 1 or 2 as much as the Dawn of War series. WWII stuff just isn't that interesting or inspiring compared to playing as Eldar or Tau or Space Marine. For Sins Rebellion, it's definitely Advent (although a couple of the ships' voice acting is like nails down a chalkboard - looking at you corvettes and Discordia!) - their backstory, desert affinity, psy and shield emphasis, etc. In Age of Mythology it was the Egyptians. I think Universe at War's Hierarchy mobile mech faction was amazingly unique and by far the coolest of the three.
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri -- Started off as diehard fan of the University...then I moved on to the Gaians and Peacekeepers...when they released the expansion, Alien Crossfire, I had a bout with the Cyborgs and Data Angels, but eventually returned to the Gaians (still my favorite till this day)...
Shogun Total War -- Started with the Shimazu because I was too stupid to know how to play any other faction...when I actually knew how to select other factions, I was always torn between the Hojo and the Uesugi...
Civilization 3 -- Persia....and after the expansions, I liked the Ottomans as well...
Rome: Total War -- Of the Roman factions, I liked the Brutii the best...of the other factions, I had some good fun with Parthia, the Greek Cities, and Egypt...but, in the end it was the Seleucid Empire I came to love the most...then I discovered the Rome Total Realism mod and never went back -- Seleucids, Parthians, and Bactrians were my favorites...
Medieval 2: Total War -- Liked all 3 Italian factions (Milan, Venice, and Sicily) though I was partial to Milan...the English and Ottomans were good fun too, especially if you wanted to have some fun fighting Mongols...
Civilization IV -- I liked pretty much any leader that had the creative trait...Louis XIV and Pericles were probably my two favorites
Galactic Civilizations II -- Diehard fan of the Altarians, also had good fun with the Krynn and Iconians...
Sins of a Solar Empire -- Diehard Advent fan since the beginning...VL are a lot of fun, but I will always love the Advent the most...if I had to pick a faction, I'd prefer AR over AL...
Civilization V -- There are just so many I like, but it would eventually come down to either the Celts or Babylon...Ethiopia, Venice, and Korea would get some honorable mentions...
Shogun 2: Total War -- Never really fell in love with a particular faction...probably had the most fun with the Ikko Ikki, the Hattatori, and the Otomo...
Endless Space -- Pilgrims all the way, though the revised Automatons have peaked my interest...
Rome 2: Total War -- The Seleucids and Egypt are neck and neck, though I do have a thing for Athens as well...
@Sel> so finally we know the story behind your nick . Care to explain some of those choices in more detail? Why do you like those sides? I have not played any of those games, but i may still understand some reasoning, And perhaps your description will excite me enough to look into those games.
@Wbino> that soviet specific thing reminded me of those russian-sounding names of the TEC stuff. Totally forgot about that. So there is something about TEC not completely generic after all, hehe
@Ekko> the WW2 stuff is somewhat less boring in RUSE. Not saying its better game than CoH, its vastly different. But not concentrating just on infantry and vehicles is a big plus to me.
MY two most favorite games of all time are Sid's Alpha Centauri and Civ 4 / Fall from Heaven2. Both have factions that are really distinctive in actual game play, tactics and strategy.
Silly me, forget the actual factions. in fall from heaven, i really like the Sheam (spelling) and the one that allowed captured settlements to keep their cultural identity. Alpha centauri, I loved the gainas... green and all, and the university. With the expansion I also favored the data angels.
Alpha Centauri is my favorite game of all time (you can get it on Good Old Games and Yitzi has made some excellent unofficial patches that also increase modding capabilities) but is old...hard game to appreciate if you didn't play it back in the day...
The factions in that game follow ideological lines...the University focuses on research at the expense of ethics, the Peacekeepers want to unite the factions at the expense of pragmatism and efficiency, and the Gaians want to protect the planet at the expense of industry...I liked those factions because I sympathized most with their ideologies (obviously not wholesale, but more so than the other 4 factions)...I also liked the Cyborgs because they were teal (no really, the color matters) and had some cool bonuses...
In Shogun, I liked the Uesugi because they specialized in archery and had "their back to a wall", making for a single front war most of the game (they also were dark blue, really pretty)...Hojo specialized in castles and had richest provinces...both sets of advantages appealed to me...as for the Shimazu, they were the only faction that could quickly adopt Christianity, which allowed the use of gunpowder early on....
In Shogun 2, I liked the Date for the same reasons I liked the Uesugi (they had similar starting positions and are dark blue), the Ikko Ikki because they were religious rebels (fighting for the cause kind of deal), and the Otomo because they started as Christian and were the best at using gunpowder weapons...
In Rome I liked the Brutii because they were poised to conquer Greece and the mid-east, my favorite regions of that era/map...I liked the Seleucids because they were in the mid-east, they had a very diverse unit roster, and they were another favorite color (silver)...in Rome 2 I like the Seleucids and Egyptians because they are in the mid-east and have diverse unit rosters...
In Medieval 2 I liked the Italian factions because they could build good units using only cities (didn't need castles) and had good income....I liked the English and the Ottomans because they had good ranged units...
In Civ 3 I liked Persia and the Ottomans because they were both Industrious and Scientific (as an aside I also have an immense respect for the Persian Empire -- especially Cyrus -- and how it/he treated the populace)...in Civ 4 I like Pericles (Philosophical and Creative) and Louis XIV (Industrious and Creative) because I liked those trait combinations -- always been a huge fan of culture in those types of games as well as science and wonder building...in Civ 5 I like Babylon because it specializes in research and the Celts because they specialize in religion -- they also happen to be my favorite colors (dark blue and teal, respectively)...
In GC2 I liked the Altarians because they were "the good guys" and I liked their bonuses (at least their bonuses in ToA)...I also liked the Krynn because they were silver and because they focused on religion, espionage, and culture...
In endless space I like the Pilgrims because they are religious, rebellious, and "good"...they also excel at expansion and research, and they look cool...
In SoaSE I like the Advent because I like research, religion, and culture....I also think their ships are the best looking...the female voiceovers are also a perk....
Talking about factions, not mentioning Warlords Battle Cry 2/3. Sin against humanity.
What are you waiting for then? I never played those games, so i am not going to be the one. Entertain me.
In response to Timm's
"Over the years i realized i usually tend to pick the alternative to the main faction of the game. If there are more than 2 factions (usually 3 or 4), i tend to go for the third or the last one. British- Rise of Nations (and T&P)
@Seleuceia> interesting. So as you say, you tend to go for factions, who generally concentrate on research, culture and religion. And the faction color is pretty important to you too - i can certainly understand that, since the aesthetics are very important factor to me as well. Occasionally, the most important. I wonder though, cant you change the color of the faction in those games to your fav one? Or you just like to stick with the default ones to keep the immersion?
And finally, does the preference for these things in a game somewhat reflect your inclinations in the real life? I mean, what do you do for living? (if you dont mind asking me)... Is is something connected to research, culture or religion, are you some kind of culturologist, do you do some sociological studies or dedicate your time to explore religion? Or nothing of that at all?
@Louist> yes, exactly...this is IMHO great topic not only because of the gameplay related stuff, but because there is that other, psychological side to this.
Oh, and you reminded me why i fancied Night Elves too... dont remember exact details, but it was their ability to use environment - forests to their advantage, unlike other factions. And i liked one of their heroes, who had an ability called StarFall, or something like that...
Since you say, you incline toward diplomacy, but at the same time like defensive approach of Hivers and you liked to play as pirate on Alpha Centauri....what is your fav faction in Rebellion... TL cause of their defenses, VR because of their diplomatic techs, or TR as the rogue-faction? Or neither one?
In Dawn of War I really liked the Eldar. I played them to the exclusion of the others. When the Tau where added I played them for a while, but I went back to the Eldar. You can't beat technology so advanced that looks like magic!
In Red Alert I went the opposite way, with the Soviets, just because I really liked the Kirovs. I really liked the Prism tanks though....
In other games I tend to choose the faction with the most magic /fantasy. I'm always a spellcaster in RPGs! I just like incinerating my enemies with a nice fireball
Core > Arm
In some games you can change the color (GC 2), though in others you would have to mod them...keep in mind that several assets (icons, logos, cities/bases, units, etc.) may work better with the default faction color, so yes the immersion is influenced by the faction color...in the case of Sins, you are talking about a whole UI, not just a simple faction color...
I have always found the limitations of AI diplomacy and often strategy always spoils my enjoyment of factions. So be they Green blobs that poop gold or whatever, its all the same in the end,,, they will all want to kill you, and or foolishly betray you/attack you or stubbornly refuse to attack at all. You just don't see all these wonderful game factions uniqueness supported with in game play, but i look forward to the day when it does!
