So it seems that THQ is finally going down and may be even sold not in one piece, as they hoped, but in pieces - i suppose that means that the rights to their games may be sold separately to the highest bidder...
I just wonder if Stardock would not be interested in Homeworld IP, if it was up for sale? I somehow cant see the likes of EA to be interested , so i doubt there would be a bidding war over this one...
As much as i am looking forward to possible Sins 2, i absolutely would not mind to see a game in the Sins mould set in a Homeworld universe even before that... btw, werent the guys at Ironclad once working at Relic or Barking Dog on original HW/Cataclysm? Or am i mistaking them for Kerberos? Anyway, if the former is true, they might be actually more "apt" to create another HW game than Relic themselves (as i suppose they are vastly different company personnel-wise now than they were back at the turn of millenium)....
So fellow Homeworld-lovers, your opinions?
IronClad getting a hold of Homeworld would be fantastic. I am actually replaying Cataclysm now. Even though the models are a little dated, the campaign is probably the best I ever seen.
Regardless it will be seriously interesting to see what goes where. So many great franchises, yet so much in debt for some silly licenses.
Anyone else get the THQ pack on steam? It was like 25$ for 350$ of their games.
And weren't they trying to sell all their game franchises in one bundle, but a judge ruled against them or something?
got a link?
looks like those deals are done
Ya it looks like they are. Sorry about that
It's actually pretty saddening that THQ been taking so many hits for just a few silly things.
Also, is Ironclad even interested into making a Homeworld 3 for any reason atm except monetary?
Well, that is the whole point of this thread. If only someone from Stardock/Ironclad would take notice of it and be bothered to reply.
Anyway, the reason might be, as alluded in the OP, people from Ironclad might have been working on Cataclysm (i might be wrong though), so perhaps sentiment...and Homeworld is a fine, acclaimed and respected IP as well.
Well maybe they have better things to do than hunt for great tips they already know all too well IN THREADS MADE WITH CAP LOCKS ON TO SHOW HOW IMPORTANT THEY ARE BECAUSE IF YOU SHOUT YOU WILL BE SURE TO GET A REPLY
I am sorry you got offended by me using CAPS LOCK.
At the same time, i am sure, i increased the chances of this thread being spotted by using capital letters. Its the whole point, why they even exist in the first place, you know. To put emphasis on something.
Anyway, as they did not reply, it was because they either did not browse the forums in the meantime, or because they just did not want to respond. It was however definitely not cause they failed to take a notice in the influx of other threads. I am certain about that.
BTW you are welcome to check my other threads to check, i am not doing this often, this was perhaps the first time ever (did not look back myself, but i dont recall other case). So its just incredible joy, when i do it once, when i feel something is important, to have people like you on me complaining. Just brilliant... cause you are surely flawless and perfect. Thanks for your contribution to this topic.
We read nearly every post.
But normally don't respond
Word has it that Barking Dog split the former members formed both Kerberos, and Ironclad. The question is who from Barking Dog formed Ironclad?
Ironclad Games is a Canadian PC game developer. The company was founded in 2003 by former employees of Barking Dog Studios/Rockstar Games. Ironclad is located in Burnaby, British Columbia.
Barking Dog Studios founded in May 1998 by Glenn Barnes, Christopher Mair, Sean Thompson, Michael Gyori, Peter Grant and Brian Thalken, all former employees of Radical Entertainment. Barking Dog, with publishing assistance by Sierra Studios, moved on to produce an expansion to the 1999 PC Magazine Game of the Year Homeworld entitled Homeworld: Cataclysm. Homeworld had been developed by Relic Entertainment but Sierra chose instead to use Barking Dog to develop the game.
Barking Dog also produced other games such as Global Operations, and Treasure Planet: Battle at Procyon. They were acquired by Rockstar Games in August 2002, and became known as Rockstar Vancouver.
Many of Barking Dog's employees later split off to form their own companies, such as Slant Six Games, Big Sandwich Games,Hellbent Games, Kerberos Productions and Ironclad Games.
Owner, Ironclad games
Well it looks like Relic is with Sega now.
Sega is a good home, they've been pretty good on the PC front lately, and they do VF.
I want my warhammer III please.
So here's question, is Homeworld source code open source or is now owned be Sega. Do you think they will be a Homeworld revisit in our future...?
Stalker prefers to Stalk
HW3 is the Holy Grail of Games. It remains the eternal quest.
The travesty of HW series in general was the improved progression for HW to Cata, and then HW2, which suffered from being rushed to publication, but still managed to become one of the most revered and popular titles of all time in it's genre.
Why the rights are not ripe for a developing publisher is a mystery. Some one should do a kickstarter just to aquire it, and then follow up with a development team.
I would buy in.
TeamPixel, an independent web development and design studio, has launched an IndieGoGo campaign (via VG247) to gather funds for acquiring and continuing the Homeworld property from THQ after the company was fragmented and sold off at auction earlier this week. The drive lasts for 14 days and asks for $50,000 to “preserve access to one of the major landmarks in sci-fi and RTS gaming for fans both old and new.”
As an “interactive media company specializing in web design, web development, desktop software, and mobile applications,” teamPixel seems like an odd choice for an organization spearheading an effort to get hold of a venerable strategy franchise. The studio claims entering the games industry has always been its goal, and it believes the few small games it developed for local companies is proof enough of its dedication.
“Somehow, nearly 10 years later, fans are still waiting for the next installment of the Homeworld franchise,” the IndieGoGo campaign’s statement reads. “We here at teamPixel are tired of waiting for the next Homeworld game and would like to rally fans together to bring the franchise back. The THQ bankruptcy has given all of us a massive opportunity to put Homeworld back in the hands of gamers.”
TeamPixel’s plans—if successful—for Homeworld split into three outcomes: A re-release of Homeworld on Steam and Good Old Games, a mobile version for touch devices, and the development of Homeworld 3. “There are many more stories to tell and gameplay opportunities to experience in the Homeworld universe,” the studio said of the latter. “We believe the franchise deserves a chance to tell more of its plot and to innovate its gameplay possibilities.”
Sega purchased Homeworld developer Relic Entertainment during THQ’s auction, but it’s unknown if the license for the space RTS carried over in the transaction. Responding to PCGamesN, a representative said more information will arrive tomorrow, saying, “It is true that Sega took part in the bidding of all shares of THQ Canada, Inc. and THQ’s IPs related to the titles developed by THQ Canada, Inc. Sega won the bid as the court announced and the deal will be closed tomorrow, after which Sega will release detailed information.”
THQ is no more: the bankrupt publisher and developer auctioned off its assets in U.S. Bankruptcy Court today. Though the court must still approve the sales, a letter from THQ’s CEO (which waspassed to Kotaku by an employee) reveals the bidders, which include Sega, Ubisoft, Deep Silver, Crytek, and Take-Two, and the THQ franchises and studios they’ll acquire. Below is a breakdown of who’s getting what, and what led to today’s sale.
Who’s getting what? Based on what we know right now…
DAMN YOU G! I been ninja'd
I am defeated....
Wow, good for them. Never played Homeworld, the level of interest here kind of puts it on my radar now.Indiegogo.com
I keep forgetting there are other crowdsourcing outlets other than Kickstarter =/
OMG!!!! Homeworld is literally the genesis of Sins, mind you, the engine for Homeworld is over 10 years old but the moving turrets, move in all directions put current games to shame. I assume the reason why Sins can't do what Homeworld does because the rights and of course, litigation. Some key people who created Homeworld are now Iron Clad....See above post for that info, and one of the mods that keep that legacy continuing....
Repair cruiser look's familiar huh...
are they saying 50k will pay for the licence?
I think they wanted 50k to help get better leverage at the auction. The owner of TeamPixel has publicly stated that if they can't win the IP at the auction that he will personally refund the money raised from crowdsourcing back to the donors.
leverage, what does that mean?
given homefront costed 500k... even at a discount, 50k is a drop in the ocean surely?
