So it seems that THQ is finally going down and may be even sold not in one piece, as they hoped, but in pieces - i suppose that means that the rights to their games may be sold separately to the highest bidder...
I just wonder if Stardock would not be interested in Homeworld IP, if it was up for sale? I somehow cant see the likes of EA to be interested , so i doubt there would be a bidding war over this one...
As much as i am looking forward to possible Sins 2, i absolutely would not mind to see a game in the Sins mould set in a Homeworld universe even before that... btw, werent the guys at Ironclad once working at Relic or Barking Dog on original HW/Cataclysm? Or am i mistaking them for Kerberos? Anyway, if the former is true, they might be actually more "apt" to create another HW game than Relic themselves (as i suppose they are vastly different company personnel-wise now than they were back at the turn of millenium)....
So fellow Homeworld-lovers, your opinions?
I call SCAM on that fundraising campaign. Even if they are legitimately interested in creating Homeworld, they are NOT the studio to do so - just look at what they've done in the past.
Having the fundraiser be flexible means you'll have to pay no matter what, and there's no guarantee other than their word that you'll get any money back.
50k is not "leverage" for anything, it is a sinkhole and you are literally paying people who don't develop games so that they can publish old titles on steam/gog and then make a profit off of them for themselves. We all want HW3 (those of us who played HW anyway heh) but this is not the way.
if it's 50k i don't see why gog can't pay that themselves. and then stick it on steam even!
Any news on this front?
HW3 I have been waiting for forever. I am part of the spacebook page.
Might have a look see there.

Following THQ’s sale of the majority of its assets yesterday, the one question that remained is what will happen to the franchises not included in this week’s auction. In a new interview with Game Informer, THQ president Jason Rubin has now confirmed that those titles will be sold off as well.
“There will be a separate process to sell off the back catalog and IP,” Rubin said. “That process will take place in the coming weeks.”
Exactly when that process will take place hasn't been revealed, nor have any of the specific titles that might be included. THQ franchises not in this week's auction include Red Faction, de Blob, Destroy All Humans! and Homeworld. The sale could potentially also include Darksiders, which remains unsold after yesterday’s proceedings.
I do believe if Star Dock and Iron Clad is truly interested to get back the progenitor of Sins, need to start pooling their money ASAP....
Following the announcement in January that it was closing, THQ has now confirmed it will sell certain remaining intellectual properties like Darksiders, Homeworld, MX vs. ATV and Red Faction. Here's the full press release:THQ Inc. today announced that it will sell certain of its remaining intellectual properties (IP) via a Court-supervised sale process. Last month, THQ sold the majority of its studios and games in development as part of its Chapter 11 case. The company expects to complete the bidding and sale process for these remaining IP assets by mid-May.
The company has designated six lots of IP titles for bidding:- Darksiders;- Red Faction;- Homeworld;- MX;- Other Owned Software, including Big Beach Sports, Destroy All Humans!, Summoner, and more; and- Other Licensed Software, including Marvel Super Hero, Supreme Commander, Worms, and more. Each lots complete group of titles is listed at the end of this announcement.Interested bidders must provide: 1) complete identification, including the names of corporate officers or those authorized to act on the bidders behalf; 2) written evidence of authority to enter into the anticipated transaction; and 3) proof of financial ability to perform the contemplated transaction. Only those bidders who meet all three requirements will be provided access to confidential information about each lot of titles once a non-disclosure agreement has been executed. Documentation meeting these three requirements should be sent to auction@thq.com.Initial bids must be submitted by April 1, 2013. Final bids are required by April 15. The company, in consultation with its unsecured creditors committee, will determine the best and highest bid for each lot and designate a back-up bid. In May, the sales will be presented to the Court for final approval.THQ Inc. has received more than 100 expressions of interest in purchasing various titles; consequently, a vigorous sale is anticipated. The company has established a special clearinghouse at auction@thq.com for email questions about the forthcoming sales.Last month, the Court approved the sales of three of THQ Inc.s owned studios and games in development, as well as Evolve, a working title under development at Turtle Rock Studios, Homefront 2, Metro: Last Light and South Park: The Stick of Truth. Under the terms of the agreements with the successful and approved bidders, the THQ estate received approximately $72 million.THQ and its domestic business units filed voluntary petitions under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware on Dec. 19, 2012.For additional information about THQ, please visit www.thq.com. All right everybody, get your checkbooks out...
So if i understand this correctly, StarDock actually tried to buy the rights for Homeworld lately, but unfortunately came second.
From Draginol twitter>
We didn't get the Homeworld IP. We were the second highest bidder. @pcgamer @fiddleclub @agenttinsley @logandecker
I had a sneaky feeling they might give it a try, given Frogboys avoidant answer on previous page
Anyway, even though it did not work out eventually, i still want to thank you for trying, i am pretty sure HW3 by Stardock/Ironclad would have been a superb game worth of its name. Lets just hope now the new owner is someone capable and willing to produce quality game. My prefered choices aside StarDock would be obviously SEGA/Relic and even more BlackBird Interactive.
I just read a unknown group got Homeworld. Wow Stardock got 2nd damn good try though. So who is the mystery buyer? (Sega or Paradox?)
Thats really a shame, I would have loved Homeworld 3 through Stardock and/or Ironclad after Sins.
Wasn't Paradox, they came 3rd in the bid war...
Quoting the above for truth. Props for trying, hopefully it will end up in great hands and not some indie fund with monied investors. Not that I have anything against those, but from Homeworld 3 I expect AAA+ budget and gameplay.
honestly... lots of headlines about teampixel outbidded by mystery bidder.
eh.. no. they were outbid by just about everyone and dog (assuming they weren't at the bottom).
sneaky. not even a hint? (from brad that is)
... forgot i replied already.. too many tabs without refresh
Probably under NDA about who bought it. If not then they are probably just being courteous and not stealing someone else's grand reveal that they likely paid many hundreds of thousands of dollars for.
Typically in these sorts of things, the bidders simply are not told the identities of other bidders at all. It's not like a public auction where you're all in a room.
I wonder if Frogboy would be willing to reveal how much Stardock placed a bid for.
i meant... sneaky that not even a hint in here that frogboy was going to bid for it. (i think.... )
Haha we were *this* close to bidding as well. Ironclad had all the legal ducks in a row but I bailed when I found out Homeworld: Cataclysm wasn't part of the auction (which part of our team had a hand in creating).
Congrats to Gearbox! Looking forward to a Homeworld 3!

Now that the numbers were out, in the first round, the high bid was $800k. I think we bid $400k and there were a couple of others at $250k and below. We dropped out at that point.
We figured if someone was bidding $800k immediately then they'd likely go far higher (the final bid was something like $1.5M). If we weren't the publisher of Sins of a Solar Empire it would have been tempting to try to have kept bidding.
I'm not disappointed that Gearbox got it though. I think they'll do well with it and they've already said they'll put HW1/2 on Steam and such which is good news for everyone.
Oh thats good they are putting 1&2 on Steam. (hopefully GOG too)
Hopefully great campaign, great multiplayer and great mod support. Seriously HW2 has some amazing mods going for it and HW1 campaign was soo good!
HW1 Campaign was amazing and it is still a fun challange except for the fact of beating it so many times I know what happens when so I can meta game it pretty hard . I do hope they make something to rival or equal that experience.
wait....
if someone bid 800k 1st round..... and the 2nd place @400k drops out.. eh... why was there another round for the 800k to go to 1 mil+ whilst SD remains 2nd place?!
if cataclysm isn't part of that bundle.. who owns it?
Well it could be that someone who bid 250k in the first round then bid 900k (or maybe the full amount, we don't even know how many rounds of bidding there were, do we?) in the second round. I'd also guess we don't even know that gearbox was the company who bid 800k in the 1st round? Could be they bid lower in the 1st round and then seeing others bid, cranked their next bid way up.
