Chris Roberts--the primary creator of Games such as Privater, Wing Commander and Freelancer is back in action!.
FROM THE CHAIRMAN:
If you’ve made it here, you probably know who I am. Maybe you have heard of Wing Commander and its sequels, or perhaps Strike Commander, Privateer or Freelancer.
If not, you’re still welcome!
I grew up making video games. I sold my first game at the age of 13 and created Wing Commander when I was 21. But 10 years ago, at the height of my career I took a break. Not because I stopped loving or playing games but because I had become frustrated with the limits of the technology at the time to realize my vision.
I decided to pursue my desire to create detailed worlds and tell sophisticated stories in film.
I always said the moment I became interested in making games again was when I was going to come back.
With the power of today’s computers and the reach of the internet I finally feel I have the tools to build the connected experience that I always dreamed of. A world that would be more satisfying and richer than any film I could work on.
With films you tell stories but with games you create worlds.
If you’ve played my games, you’ll know that’s what I love to do.
I’m here to tell you that I have been working on something for just under a year, something that embraces everything that my past games stood for but takes it to the next level.
I hope you’ll be as excited by it as I am.
My new endeavor is still in its early stages but I invite you to take the journey with me.
If you register below you’ll become an insider that will not only give you early access to the game’s website and forums, but you will also get the opportunity for rewards and privileges that no one else will get. It’s my way of showing how important your early involvement and support is.
The full announcement will be at 10am Eastern Standard Time (UTC -5) on the 10th day of the 10th month of this year.
My name is Chris Roberts.
And if you would indulge me I would like to create a world for you.
The link is here (and "42" is what will get you in if you get stuck). Go enroll and let this guy know you are interested--this is the original scfi game maker who broke all the rules and did the things no one else would.
I would pay for this game in advance without even knowing what it was.
I believe the link gives you the chance to be an alpha-beta tester for the game during the next two years. I'd highly recommend it.
I also think it would be fantastic if Stardock and Ironclad sent him a note of support (I'm just sayin'...)
I foresee a 2 million kickstarter coming up.
This is like Firefly coming back to TV.
Sorry to sound pessimistic, but you do know you're talking about the guy who produced, directed and wrote the Wing Commander movie?
He gives a nod to your point and specifies that games are his passion. Do you also realize Lorne Green and "Boxie" were in the original BSG?
Afternoon bump--this thread will be seen!
Sweet. Haven't really liked a space sim since Freelancer, though I didn't dislike Darkstar One.
Am I living two years in the future?
Crosses fingers....Skyrim+New Wingcommander = gold!!!
For those of you who are curious, and want to play Wing Commander, there's a version of it online: http://privateer.sourceforge.net/
There is also a Wing Commander version for the now open source Freespace 2 game:
I can recommend it.
Here is a concept art piece of the work being done on the game now:
And in case anyone missed it--here's the fan made, Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn.
I'm gonna be ^playing wing commander tonight LOL
This article got me pretty excited!
Edit: A preview of his new project
You need all the damn videos and blow your damn minds!
Also HD that shit and start foaming at the mouth.
Finally FUND THEM DAMNIT!
YEAH BUDDY!!!!!! Consider me, and at least two other friends who will wake up to find this article soon to have the game be 'pre-ordered'!
I'm kind of concerned that so much has been promised that it's impossible to deliver. Hopefully I'm proven wrong.
Nah, i was hoping for something like Sins. Not a bloody shooter.
The graphics and the concept art looks very good, though.
That's games like TIE Fighter and FreeSpace 2 you're referring to. There's more to them than CoD-style cover mechanics since you have to control an actual fighter and do things like maneuvering, energy distribution, shield management, and making sure your escort targets don't die, all while you're being shot at. There's also no way one of those could be easily made for a console since their controls take up most of the keyboard.
Well, it does not matter, whether its more arcade, or more simulation, its still shooter - not a strategy
But as i said, I like the graphics - apparently built on Cryengine 3 - and the music in the video was very pleasing to my ears. No doubt for people into this kind of games this is going to be a big thing.
No, they're not strategy. There's a lot more meat to these games though than what Call of Duty offers, so calling them pure shooters is a bad description.
Its in the Wing Commander Universe!. Looks like a WC 1 reboot, or in the timeline of WC1. Vega sector, Bengal class carrier! and the fighters can be Rapiers. The enemy fighters could be Dralthi. Now i'm stoked!
Might mention Darkstar One was ported to the 360. I don't know how well it worked, mind you.
