I've noticed a lot of threads running around with members spewing some very nasty comments back and forth. Perhaps it's just for fun, but even so it's off-putting for forum-goers, and I'd imagine new players as well.
I won't name names, but I'd just like to remind everyone that these are public forums. Everything we post here reflects on our community. And with SINS: Rebellion so close to release date, we have a lot more eyes on us than we used to. People may read these posts and be hesitant to join the game, or go on multiplayer.
I'm no moderator. I just want to see a forum where we all can get online and provide useful feedback without attacking each other.
Yeah, you typically expect to see these type of comments in gamefaqs/steam/wow/sc2/yahoo news etc. etc. So when I see it here it means we no longer have a monopoly on mature adults. To be expected I guess, since when the balancing for this game is as bad as it is right now tempers surely rise.
ive noticed that too. reading through the forums ive seen several people just go postal over tiny little comments. it's a tad unsettling. i dont think balancing and desync issues are valid excuses for snapping at things that sometimes dont even seem offensive or derogatory to me at all.
Not very welcoming is it?
This is a small community...many of the people here have "known" each other for several years...also keep in mind that many of the frequent forum posters chat with each other outside of the forums via teamspeak and the like...
That it is small and has an "everyone knows everyone" sort of environment lends to a lot of trolling, sarcasm, inside jokes, and the like...
There also are some rivalries between individuals on these forums that go back many months or even years...some of them are silly, some of them are just for fun, and some are serious spite that is well justified as far as the partakers are concerned...
Some of the same people who tend to troll or incite are also giving valuable feedback or providing legitimate advice/help...while there are some people on these forums that I tend to disagree with or get annoyed by, I've found that even the worst of the worst have valuable things worth listening too...
Another thing to always keep in mind is that SD listens...the comments and suggestions by people on the forums can actually affect updates and serious balance changes to the game...SD does not have a "knack" for game balance and heavily depends on the community for feedback...as such, if lots of people are providing the same wrong suggestion or wrong advice, it can adversely effect the future development of sins...
It can be frustrating or annoying when people harshly critique your ideas or opinions...but as the saying goes, the "squeaky wheel gets the grease" even if such advice or suggestions will not improve the game...if a million noobs advocate for a balance change that is completely fallacious and wrong-headed, can you really blame the handful of skilled players for doing everything they can to prevent such ignorant feedback from adversely affecting future game updates? On the surface it seems arrogant and egotistical to act in such a manner...but I'd rather listen to egotistical trolls all day than see SD adopt awful suggestions for "improving' game balance...
I won't defend the actions of the entire community nor will I claim there is no room for improvement, but being a forum member here is a choice...no one is getting paid to provide feedback for this game, write well-written posts, or act like a "mature adult" all the time...on one hand I wish some parts of the community were nicer...but on the other hand, I can't blame them for acting the way they do...
There will always be trolls and people looking to be in the spotlight with a ridiculous post or comment. If there are no moderators to well, moderate those posts / threads not much can be done. As Seleuceia mentions some of the worst offenders, minus all of the non sense do have valuable input. The biggest contributor to the recent wave of players IMO is steam. If you haven't seen steam forums (I'm aware this is SD) they are FULL of nonsense and trolls for the most part and half of the threads you read through have people banned. Steam is a great way to expand a games accessibility but with the good comes the bad.
i see both of your points, and apologize for the ignorance... while i have been here for a while my posts are few and far between, so i am unaware of most of the inner workings of the community here
I think the most frequent occasion that brings out the worst of the community is when a new player starts a "new idea" thread or something to that effect...from the communities' perspective, it is just another noob who's "original ideas" have actually been proposed numerous times and deemed completely unworkable or just plain silly...from the new player's perspective, it is a hostile community of the old guard shooting down new ideas and hazing the new guys...
I think the fundamental cause for much of the gripe and flaming is a loss of patience...those who have been around here for awhile just get tired of the same shit and quickly lose their patience...
There just is such a divide between skilled and casual players...one group wants good game balance while the other group just wants "cool stuff" and an easier game to learn/play...when a game is in a state like such and is in desperate need for change, these two fundamentally different visions for how the game should be inevitably clash and each side simply doesn't have the patience to deal with the other...
Patience is the key...quite simply, it is easier to say "You're retarded" than explain for the zillionth time why this game will never support multi-threading....
is it just me, or did a couple of threads pop up directly mocking your last post, Seleuceia?
Let's just go with coincidence...I'd rather not think about the other possibility, which implies some people have way too much time on their hands...
Well, I would have to say, here is way too cleaner than 95% forums in my country.
So I think it's still acceptable, personally. And maybe a little more familiar now
But I still prefer the circumstances two weeks before, instead of now. It was much more rational and self-restrained.
You forget your are on the internet. If we were all on the Chinese internet, if uncivil, we could be put to 5 years hard labor, beating and rape until properly re-educated.
Only 5 years? I'd imagine you'd be more likely to get a bullet in the head, overpopulation and all.
I really don't know China gives people outside from other countries such a feeling.
Well, at least it's a good example to educate children to be polite, even on the Internet.
