So with Impulse over to Gamestop and the digital distribution competition no longer something we’re participating in we’ve developed a new digital updating client – Stardock Central (what’s old is new again).
But unlike the old “big” client, the new one is very…very simple.
(sorry for the lame screenshot, I’m caught up on my games on this new machine and haven’t installed any apps yet).
Your Stardock purchases will show up here once you login. Just pick what you want to install (or update) and press a button and it’ll use our massively fast CDN to install it (we have a long-term agreement with our CDN except now the only thing using its bandwidth is our stuff so the download speeds are kind of ridiculous – it’s like being the only guy on a 1 gigabyte line).
The new settings includes an option to have it simply update your software automatically. So you can either choose to stick with older versions or always have it up to date.
..
OK, let’s say you don’t like to have to install a client at all. That’s fine too. You can update your software and games via the web as well:
Pick whether it’s software or games and it’ll look at your account, when you last updated, and off you go. The installer will figure out what you need to install (i.e. if you have multiple machines with different versions) and off you go.
It’s designed to be as streamlined as possible.
UPDATE: TRY THE LATEST VERSION HERE:

See where I'm going here?
The software is yours if you keep it. The web site is clear about that. The website never promises that Stardock will make available your applications forever.
Nothing in my comment that you quoted said that it was stated on the site when buying Object desktop that you had to archive it in order to use it forever.
What I did say was that he should have archived to have backups.
you really can't use that analogy cause your getting the magazine not a download link so let's say the magazine is an .EXE then I would say put it in a safe place
but with impulse you never got the .exe to save it and the site stardock.com never states when buying Object Desktop that you need to archive it and unlike the magazine if you move or go to a new PC you still get to look through the magazine as to the archive it's only good on that PC..
what I am saying is it needs to be stated on the site (Stardock) that if you let your sub run out you have to have it archived prior to the sub running out..
Not telling pass Customers oh well you should have Arched it... and it not being stated on Stardock.. when they buy it .. to me it is just wrong...
I must say, that is like saying that Adobe will should make available to you a copy of Photoshop 7 because you bought it years ago? I doubt that very much.
It would be up to you to keep a copy. Nothing different here. Just my opinion.
At the prices SD charges for their apps, this discussion borders on ludicrous. IMHO. YMMV.
This thread started out with
Preview of new Stardock download store / updater
As many threads do it got off track and since it did I will add My Opinion. When a couple years ago I mentioned a way to get the actual .exe program I was told Impulse would take care of it all. I haven't and don't expect to let my sub run out till i'm dead or SD is no longer around and my guess is I will die first.
Right now we have an "my account/store" page to go to and get the actual .exe program. Lets say I couldn't afford to renew my sub. I say no problem as I have all the exe programs I paid for now. To many people have assumed that all the past members were very active on the threads and saw the information discussed now and then about having to archive. I can assure you there are many people that just wanted to make their desktops look cool, had no real interest in beiong part of the community and when their time was up didn't care. However when they had to reformat, purchase a new computer they found out there was no way to use their programs again because they never knew about having to archive them. So with the system that was in place they are what you would say, shit out of luck.
I wouldn't expect SD to be able to send someone a program that was 3 years old and now several updates later it's totally different. Don't know how one can compair a magazine to an actual .exe file. Even an older Photoshop 7 that was mentioned. Most people would have purchased it on disc but even if you choose to download from the Adobe site you get the full .exe file. Yes now it's the person responsibilty to keep it safe and if they don't it's their fault no one elses. I have some programs I purchased years ago and still use some of them. Yes they are quite old but work very well so never had a need to pay for updated versions.
So to finish I think post #153 tried to explain some of this but yet the system that never gave you the actual .exe program still gets compaired to magazies and other programs people actually had the .exe for. So the past is the past and time to move on to our new SD store downloader and hopefully we will enjoy it when it becomes available.
Dave, the system DOES give you the actual exe file.
Cant wait!
I am a little confused and have no interest in this off topic conversation. Move it along long hairs!
Now back to the preview, when could we expect to see this on our proverbial front doors? Will it be after the holiday? Just as a joke you should make SDC available for download via steam and origin.
Awesome news
'Impulse V2' the required installer for SDC .........
Somehow I really don't think so......
With Impulse I never found how to get the actual .exe. So if it was available through it what I wrote doesn't mean anything I guess. I know you can get the exe programs now since Impulse was gone.
Anyway as I did say time to get back to what this thread was posted for and wait for additional news of progress. Past is the past and moving on to new things is what it's all about. It's all good.
Hope you can all understand that sometimes I just get so tired of reading about the same bitching over and over again and after it has all been addressed many times it still continues. Can't change the past so we can only move on with the future.
Everyone have a wonderful Holiday.
At the bottom-right...."More"....."Download and archive" ...
I can't say I ever bothered...as I was always going to be a current customer/subscriber/user ....
Looking good, thanks for the update Brad!
Well there was a way, I did ask but never received that answer. History now. Guess I never looked enough either asI had no plans not to be a subscriber either as I did say. Thanks.
When can we get the new downloader?
There's not a specific date, just keep checking the news.
since i also had to completely reinstall my OS because of Hardware changes, i know how some people feel... I was emailed that before my Object Desktop expires i should archive my applications in order to keep them...The only bad thing is- like it was mentioned here before ...that impuse archive will only saves impulse files not the installer itself (executeable)So i wonder how things will be when GS-impulse is no longer supported...will we be able to ( restore the saved archives in SDC with the current impulse files ? )Or how will that be handled? The way i see it is if GS-impulse is no longer supporting or offering stardock products- iam unable to store my programs "forever" in a "legal way"Sounds strange i know and please dont missunderstand me im just trying to know how these things will be handled when it will be out and iam also unpationatly awaiting the new SDC.I just hope i wont have to make a HDD backup to restore my applications... since impulse is already having a hard time restoring with an updated file.
It's easier now to backup your apps. Just download the installers from your account and put them on an external drive, or wherever you have your backups.
https://store.stardock.com/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=/myaccount/products
That's what I do. Always save the installers cause ya never know.
@ ID yeah but that is what i was refering to for example my object desktop subscription expiered on impulse and the only way to restore them is over impulse there is no option for that on the store page since it wont be listed anymore...The only way i can restore my skinstudio pro and all the other apps is via impulse sadly- and its unsure how long that will remain...
Eh eh, someone will surely answer you that the regular way is for you to send an email to [email protected] and/or [email protected] explaining the situation ... (no i'm not joking)
Roloccolor, all you will have to do is go to the store and download and save your apps to any internal/external drive. You can do that right now.
Neophil, just when the hell are you going to get with it, and just go to the store and download the latest versions you are entitled to?
The purely painful, endlessly repetitive airing of your obsession with Impulse is getting a bit much for many people here.
