hey guys, are you working on a fix for the having to downgrade to the non-beta then back up to the current beta version to avoid a 1.9 gig update?
Also, I always try and post saved games, error logs, custom sov. files, crashes, screen shots etc but I feel like I'm being ignored when I post bugs, nothing is ever done about them.
Before i do this has anyone else had Mattsan's problem? or am i ok to update
Its showing 8.64mb now but i dont want to root the game.
Finally got around uninstalling and reinstalling elemental to avoid having to download 1.4GB of game for a 20MB update.
Uninstall and reinstall wasn't enough because impulse, that piece of crapware, decided that elemental wasn't installed on my computer. Bizzare but true. I could manually start up elemental but impulse didn't get the hint. So I had to completelty remove impulse and elemental and then start from scratch.
This included signing into impulse.
However, as we speak I am updating from 1.0 to the latest version. Download size is 232MB. Supposed speed is 700k a second but judging by the time it has taken that is a complete farce. Well I hope the speed is a farce because the only other explanation would be that the download size is reported incorrectly HOwever, I am confident that their reported speed is at fault as I have noticed this behaviour before.
FYI Windows 7 64 bit
Obviously I have the DVD. Also I ran into some weird errors where after the uninstall a resintall wouldn't work because windows considered that I still had to uninstall elemental. I got around it by removing entry from the registry.
deleted reg bit.
copied over the impulse thingy (i don't use default directory)
boot up impulse... says 1.99 gig
update progress x/ 1.91 gig
cancelled d/l
deliberately don't install flash on ie... because i don't use ie anyway.
win7 64 bit. digital version of elemental (why that should make a blind bit of difference is beyond me)
registry entry after all that

Here is todays error log in case this helps :
This log was generated while performing the actions in my post #125 above.
I am running Vista 32 bit. Elemental is installed in the default location. I run Impulse as an Administrator.

OK. So I tried starting up Elemental again tonight and it works. Comes up version 1.11 in game. I started a new game, all seems to work fine.
Seems that when I updated before that it got stuck on the loading screen, and all it required was a reboot to solve it. (Typical windows). One thing I noticed when the loading screen was stuck was that DataZip.exe was still running in Task Manager. After rebooting tonight it all works well and obviously DataZip.exe was not running.
So perhaps DataZip.exe is not releasing file handles and it is not terminating properly after an update? Just a wild thought and maybe something to look into.
Furthermore, even though I can play the game and version 1.11 shows up in game, when I try to Verify Install it still says that the game is incorrectly installed and says I need to download a 1.42GB update. Clearly I don't. Maybe this is tied to the fact that the UpdateSizes registry key for Elemental did NOT get generated this time after updating. So maybe Impulse is stumped and assumes I need to update.
Edit: Finally, I want to say that I was one of the people who tried out the betas. Versions 1.09f?-1.09t I think. Anyhow, I had to do the toggle Show Prelease button and reverify each time to install each beta. So maybe all of the installing, deinstalling, verifying and reverting back to official releases has somehow broken my installation.
Hopefully some of this will trigger an AHA moment for you so everyone can put this issue behind them.
To be clear, the work around for the 1.9 GB (full game size) download is to remove or rename the elemental.xml as described in post #120 (https://forums.elementalgame.com/401836/get;2864652)
MattSan,
The verify install functionality is for worse case scenarios where there could possibly be a problem with the install. When you use this function, if Impulse finds that the application does not appear to be installed correctly, Impulse will put the game in to a state that is a simulated 'Update Available' state. This is not the same as there actually being an update available. Thus Impulse will not calculate the download size until you begin the actual update. As for why after you verify install, Impulse is telling you that Elemental is not installed correctly; we will be looking in to this. It is likely that some game files get modified when you start up the game. Had you done the update and immediately (before attempting to run the game) run the verify install, Impulse would likely tell you that Elemental is installed correctly.
Thanks for the response IamDean. Now that I know that I won't try verifying the install unless it actually doesn't work. I am still unsure as to why the UpdateSizes key did not get regenerated though.
surely there won't be a updatesize key when there's nothing to update? (as in you've updated already)
Actually, I have GalCiv 2 and Sins of a Solar Empire fully updated and both have UpdateSizes keys in the Registry still.
I have no idea how to do any of this - not technical enough. I have 32 bit Vista, have never loaded any beta files, only official updates and now it wants to download 1.9GB for the new patch.
Is there any simple way to fix this?
trcanberra,
We hope to have a build of Impulse that will automatically take care of this, ready in less than a week. Look for an update to Impulse shortly.
Thanks - appreciate the update. I'm also hoping the updates won't kill the Destiny's Ember content as has often happened in the past? The fix has been to de-install and then reinstall, but ideally patches shouldn't break existing official content or processes. I appreciate the difficulties you have dealing with all sorts of variant PCs out there, but these issues (1.9g and Destiny's Embers) are both areas within your control.
Anyway, as I say, appreciate the work being done and being kept up to date on progress - regards.
(Recopying a post from the dev journal post cause I noticed this thread here ^_^
Here's how I personally fixed the 1.91GB install thing. It might work for you, might not...
I had the 1.91GB download thing initially. The issue seems to be that Impulse wasn't detecting my elemental 1.10 install, so to fix it.
1. Use the "detect application" (in the menu button to the left of explore).
2. In the dropdown boxes: Product Category -> My Games. Product -> Elemental: War of Magic. Click Import.
3. Right click elemental, update it. It will turn into a 9.08MB or so patch because the game will be detected as version 0.00 instead of 1.10. Once its downloaded, you will be updated.
We have released a new build of Impulse to take care of this update issue. If you have any more problems once you have updated to the latest Impulse, please let us know.
Once you open Impulse, it should prompt you for the update. If you have any issues getting the update, you can always get the latest public release from http://impulsedriven.com/download
Hi.
My Impulse updated. Download size is sticking at 1.99GB. Tried restarting several times, refreshing, starting a download and cancelling, verifying installation. Nothing. Haven't touched my registry entries ever.
Let's hope it's just me. If not, better luck next time.
Luckily Chaosti's trick worked for me. Detected the application, download showed as 2.25GB, but it changed to the 9 or so megs. Karma coming up..
I haven't been this baffled by mysterious configurations ever since I last modified my config.sys and autoexec.bat to get a couple of kilos of more EMS, XMS and high memory. And that wasn't yesterday [e digicons][/e]
Vallu751,
Impulse wasn't showing Elemental as installed for you? Did you install Elemental through Impulse or from the dvd?
Impulse updated.
It still wants to download a 1.9 gig update.
For info, my original installation was off the Limited Edition DVD, all of the previous updates through Impulse have been fine.
Heh, after fully re-downloading Elemental for like the 3rd time...I remembered that I upgraded to the LE prior to release and thus have a copy on disk...
*facepalm*
In Impulse, do you see 'Available' or 'Update available' for Elemental?
It said 'update available'.
For info - I followed the suggestions in post #138 above and that worked fine, 9.8MB update and the game seems to be 1.11 now.
Just to clarify...
Before you did the 'Detect application...' bit, did Impulse show 'Available' or 'Update available'?
After following #120 and reporting back I restored elemental.xml and deleted the update size registry key again, so I was still on v1.1 and ready to try upcoming bugfix approaches.
Today an Impulse update was availiable (3.28.618 build 1083) and after installing that it again showed a update size of 1,91gb, but I could hear it intensively verifying files on my harddisk. After that had finished, the correct update size of 8,64mb was reported.
puntarenas,
Great to hear. Thanks for verifying that for us.
You're welcome and good job!
Just to correct my typo above, Impulse version is 3.28.618 build 1983.
