Hi all
Long time lurkey 1st time poster
Im at work but i have had the email and i look forward to getting home and trying the game.
I have watched everyone in the last few months praising Frog Boy and Stardock for their excellent way of doing things, their focus and their games. Praise i believe is deserved. Stardock are quite probably one of the best companies as far as passion and community based development around.
Now the game is released im seeing soooooo many idiots just complaining for the sake of complaining. For example i saw one guy, just a moment ago complain that he got a duplicate map. So what? Im sure if you randomise it again you will get a different one. Is it really worth coming here and complaining about it? Grow up i say.
The game may well not be exactly what you expected but we have all had plenty of chances to see it grow and we will likely see it change quite a bit before Stardock are done with it.
So unless you really dont like the game, or unless you genuinly find something wrong worth mentioning (and if you do keep it polite instead of a whinge) then in my opinion you should shut up lest you chase away one of the last of the good companies who havent sold their soul.
Thats all i came here to say.

I don't see why criticizing certain elements of the game is mutually exclusive with being a fan of the game and its developer. In fact, I'd say that the more you like a company or its product, the more constructive criticism you should be willing to give in order to help make a product better. Back when i was paying my bills playing the bar scene in a band, the absolute worst thing i could think of at the end of the night was blind(or deaf) fanboy/girls. I knew it wasn't perfect, having people blow smoke up my ass didn't help. But if we had someone show up who knew what they were talking about and came to me with a list of ways we could improve? that made my night every time.
of course, constructive criticism and bitching are two different things, the former being good and the latter being a waste of a post.
I agree, which is why i didnt say people should stop raising bugs or comments. Just not to be abusive while doing it (like calling the devs lazy etc)
All New Releases today have minor flaws and bugs. It happens. Anyone...I Repeat ANYONE...who buys PC games in this day and age should know what to expect. They expected to have a few more days to squash some of the minor crap people are complaining about. Hell there are still a few people out there who can't even get the game to Run at all. Those few people, as long as they meet the minimum system specs, are the only ones who should be bitching even in the slightest.
Stardock ALWAYS supports their games. None of us have ANYTHING to worry about in the long run. Bottom line is, in a couple of weeks, Elemental will be patched up and running smooth as glass for 99.9% of us, and that's a fact. Even I'm having a text issue in game I'm trying to resolve. I keep getting a lot of "String Not Found" text in the game. When I saw the pics Frogboy posted earlier today they weren't in his version, so, I know it's something on my end and I'm trying to fix it.
Play, Enjoy, HAVE FUN...and Have Faith in Stardock, because they don't let paying customers down...Period.
Well said mate!
Eh, I was talking about the DATE being 23rd, when the release is on 24th.
You should probably educate yourself a bit before attacking, lest you become the same monster you seek to destroy.
When i first wrote that there wasnt more information except the top three posts in that thread.
With further information it seems it is a feature left out that some people want to remain in the game.
My point is unaffected though, people are being rude. A guy just now started saying Stardock was being money grabbing and dishonest. Hardly a fair statement just because they left a feature out of day -1 release is it?
Seems that same person has now asked for their money back and decided to tell all about it on the forums (though the post has been changed now)
Except every map will be different. Resources will be in different locations and people will start in different locations. "Random" don't require that every single factor be randomized. Hell, I can swing my arm in a random direction but that still isn't going to make it extend beyond a few feet, no matter how randomly I swing it.
Well, it's a known phenomenon. Guys go from fanboys to a rabid pack of trolls on release date. I think it has something to do with the mentality that in a Beta, you feel more of a fellowship with the developers - you are working together to make a better game, which should give a fairly high tolerance to small problems - but on release, you switch toles to being paying customers that feel things should no longer be unstable or buggy at all; your role becomes more in opposition to the developers.
I'm not sure if that analysis is correct, or even close to how it is, but it is easily observable that the level of complaints rise by many orders of magnitude on release. It is probably related to a lot of new faces as well, whose excpectations may or may not have been met.
Actually, I'd say that's a pretty good analysis. I'd imagine a lot of people and players feel that way. In one situation having something broken or unfinished is acceptable, and in the other it isn't. It's up to all of us to know how to give "constructive feedback" and not be a bunch of whiners, which more and more people these days just don't know how to do.
Give it about a week and the true trolls will leave, and the ones who care will still be here.
Agreed with OP. A couple months ago when I came here it was unlike any other forum. People were (about 90%) nice, kind, and helpful. However, as we got closer to launch... its disappeared. All the people from back then are still here but for every one of them three to five "annoying" people have arrived. I guess as you get closer to release people come out of the woodworks!
Also, I just hate all the major complaints about seemingly minor issues. For example the random map generates. Brad said that it is a seed based generator and that continents are going to be similar. Maybe I don't know the full extent of this yet (download is at 91.7% now) but it seems a dull topic by now. I'm also tired of the Faction Editor complaints. Just TRY and make it in XML, it's not too difficult. Factions are a little more complex then you'd expect (for a game UI to create) but they are not too difficult to copy a previous faction and make your own with a tiny modification. There is even an editor you can download to do it for you and a "Faction Editing Guide" in the "Mod Section".
Everyone's kinda DEMANDING that Stardock give them everything. Just TRY and do it yourself, please.
I guess there are people complaining because there was so much excitement about the apparition of this game.
In my opinion, as I've understood there is a patch coming in about a month from now, the best positive reaction of the community would be to point out the bugs and things who need to be addressed (including the problem with the maps not being randomized).
Yeah give it a week and Rune_74 won't be here anymore. ))
While that flies for people like you and me, most of the mass gaming population gets scared by even looking at something that resembles "Code", even something as simple as XML. Granted there are more and more "older gamers" these days, there's still a LARGE chunk of the gaming population that are kids who are easily deterred when looking at modding. Some people even think that you need to be a rocket scientist to be able to handle XML. They just don't know how truly easy some of it is. Time and desperation will gradually push them into the file structure.....I hope.

I mean I'm just here because I'm stuck at work, waiting for some automated worki task to finish before I can head home to finally start playing. However it never gets old : a day before release everybody cries "gimme that game NOOOOOOW! PLZ!" and as soon as it's there ppl. start to complain. Now that is not always a bad thing. As long as there is feedback you actually did something right as a developer, since there seem to be people that actually care about your product.
On the other hand however you're always risking a lot when you release something not polished up. In our special case here I'm happy to have a version of the game, no matter if it's "finished" or not, knowing that there WILL be a lot of improvement over time. But others expect a different quality when buying something and I'm sure I'd be pretty much pissed if I bought the new...let's say "Mass Effect 3" finding it in such a bad shape. But here were talking about Elemental. A Stardock game. Smaller company than Bioware, not so many ressources. For ME that IS actually a pretty good excuse.
I loved both GalCiv games and baught all addons too. I modded a few things just for myself and I'm still playing those games from time to time. So I kinda know what to expect from Elemental and I'm not worried about lack of support or updates at all. Furthermore I'm really lookin forward to get my hands on playing around with the XML files, graphics and stuff. If Stardock isn't fast enough to supply me with the content I want, then to hell with it, I'll do it by myself. Not because I'm some sort of fanboy but because I enjoy doing that AND Elemental enables me to do so...tripple A titels like Civ or my Mass Effect example wouldn't let me do that in such a manner.
So no whining on my side of the Internet.
I have to agree with the original poster. I just came from work and am downloading the game right now. Can't understand all this nonsense!
Of course, the more bug reports and the more comments the better, But what does not help are just plain destructive complains.
So the maps are not random? Well, they should be random. It is something to be reported. But an excuse for destructive blaming!
Well just compare it to HOI III and it would be easy to see this game is GRRRRRRRRREAAAAAT comparte to it. )
Expectations were badly managed. People expected random maps and faction customization. People didn't get those things. Even if you leave out how much stuff was completely ripped out of multiplayer to make the release date, the game needs a fair bit of polish to get into the state most other games are at by release.
Given that, a certain amount of negative reaction is expected.
The one who talks about BOTH of them. )
Everybody remember:
(Just thought I'd add something constructive... [e digicons][/e] )
Wow its like you can't even talk about features you don't like. You people are weird. The world needs less Yes-Men like you.
Uh, i think you have misunderstood everything being said. I have repeatedly said that its not the problems or concerns being raised by people. Its the attitude in which those things are being raised.
Saying Stardock has sold out, is lazy, money grabbing etc is NOT constructive. Pointing out bugs, raising concerns about the games features is absolutely fine.
i would read peoples posts before commenting on them were i you.
i guess i haven't seen any of those more derogotory terms tossed about, looks to me like 90%+ of the criticism i'v read has been constructive and warrented.
