This game came out last year, with mediocre reviews. Most said it was a good system with some bugs. The trading card/RTS combo intrigues me, and I'm curious to see if it is worth checking out.
Well last I heard it was made free to play. So might as well. I played the beta for it(more of a demo tho), and it was interesting and a new take. I didn't want to hafta keep buying new cards all the time for it tho.
They have a free version that turns into the full game. Whether you buy more cards is your own option. It is definitely worth checking out and joining a battleforge community.
It's not a bad game if you like blending a card game and RTS. Similar to Magic The Gathering there are various Elemental nodes around the map, and you have to control them to power your cards. Some cards might need 4 of a specific type, some might need 2 specific and 2 any, and the basics just need 1 or 2 total. It's a pretty intuitive system. The PvE aspect was pretty fleshed out, last I played (before it went free-to-play, so it's been a while), and some maps require co-op play. They're generally split into Solo, few people, lots of people maps. Completing these on various difficult awards you card upgrades.
However, when I played the base "decks" were pretty slim, and especially if you want to get into PvP, I imagine you wouldn't be competitive without buying new cards.
I was in the beta. It was ok, but not great. The buying card thing turned me off too. Never bought full version...
it's free to play and even if you want to go "competitive" PvP you can use the free deck and not be too bad, as it actually has a pretty good power-level. I liked it, I invested a little into the game (I really enjoy trading ._.)
There was a post on this in the PC Gaming section of Demigod, which I guess isn't accessible. I outlined the good and bad gameplay elements of it and what a typical game sorta looked like.
I played Battleforge for a couple months off and on and I really enjoyed it, particularly the co-op/PvE content. If you like Magic cards (or other CCG's) and RTS's then I would say its worth trying out for sure.
It's a good game. I just hate the pricing system. You NEED certain cards in order to progress to advance and expert PvE (some of the first few missions can be done with the starter deck on expert, but none beyond those). It goes without saying you need certain cards to be competitive in PvP, too.
My biggest regret was spending so much money on this game, just like I did with Magic: The Gathering. Good games, but simply not worth the price you pay when you can play games that are just as good for cheaper.
