Last night, three friends and I were looking for something to play. The StarCraft 2 Beta was closed for the moment and League of Legends was being patched. We joked about playing Demigod, before realizing that only two of us had it installed and there were no games in the lobby. So we did what any responsible person would do: We bought a new game.
After flipping through reviews for multiplayer games we would all be interested in, I mentioned that I had seen Sol Survivor - a multiplayer TD game. We all purchased and installed it. I started a lobby for a new four player Co-Op game. My friends found it easily (in part because there were no other games up.) I tinkered with the game settings. We each picked an officer blindly, clicked ready, and the game started after about five seconds of loading.
Of all the selling points, I recommend Sol Survivor because it just works. We didn't have to troubleshoot anything, we didn't have to hassle with a third party lobby. It just worked. No crashes, no bugs, no lag.
We played for a few hours, having fun coordinating who built what towers to counter the enemies coming down the line. We used our special abilities to kill them. And we had a good time There were five-six maps to pick from and five difficulty settings - enough to keep us interested and challenged. I won't be playing it every day, but as a time killer between matches and having a laugh on ventrilo, it was good fun.
I would not recommend this game for mulitplayer if you do not get it with a friend - of the whole time we had our lobby open, only one random joined. With friends, though, we'll get our $10 out of it.
Thanks for the good words mate. I'm the Community Manager for Cadenza Interactive, the company that made Sol Survivor. Multiplayer follows the larger community, so unfortunately playing on Impulse is best done with friends. You can also organize games via our forums at http://www.solsurvivorgame.com. Our Impulse community organizes quite well from there, and the multiplayer really is worth a look.
I'd say we like being in the niche where you play Sol Survivor as a way to unwind from other games. It is as challenging as you want it to be, and takes only as much time as you'd like to commit, depending on the game mode.
Sounds like just the game for me and my wife. Going to give it a try when I have time
Looks neat. Just a couple of questions if Cydereal is still here.
1. Does the coop mode work with any number of players? FutileEmotion was playing 4 player, would it work with 2 player as well?
2. You mentioned that multiplayer follows the larger community, are the Steam and Impulse versions split in terms of who can play with who?
Thanks!
I was looking at this a potential time waster, and I have the same concern as Tridus. Does that mean Impulse buyers can't play with Steam buyers?
As far as I can tell anyone should be able to play with each other since it uses its own lobby. (not 100% on that since my friends bought through impulse like me. It is definitely worth even more than 10 in my book. Only thing is some multiplayer modes could use more maps. Co-op campaign is 2-4 players . There is also Duo Campaign(2players),, versus (2-8 players) , Coop mode 2-6 players, Wars (2-6 players). Also 2 single player modes.
Tridus:
1. All multiplayer modes support 2 players as well, and some support going solo against the waves of enemies on multiplayer maps.
2. The lobby searches are separate, but Steam players can use join-by-IP to play with Impulse friends. A game started on Steam is Steam only (the game uses Steamworks).
