Discuss anything related to Rap/Hip Hop. I'd like to discuss how I noticed that Rap/Hip Hop doesn't get the respect that it deserves here on SD.
My current favorite artist,
Notorious BIG
Insane Clown Posse
KRS One
Immortal Technique
Drake
Kid Cudi
Aesop Rock
Esham
Eazy E
Junoir Mafia
Jay Z
um... So the white gangster stuff is cool? His lyrical ability sets him apart from a lot of rappers, but liking him but not rap music isn't the most intelligent thing I've heard all week...
For the meandering crowd, most Rap is horrible shit that doesn't deserve radio play, but I should be more specific by saying that most Music is horrible shit that doesn't deserve radio play. A lot of rock sucks. Sucks hard. I can't tell you how many records I've bought because I kind of liked one song, only to be pissed at the rest of the album's ear torture. Metallica has a thousand songs, and seven good ones.
Every genre has it's good and bad. The qualifier Rap is just as large as the qualifier Rock. Meaning, that Rock music is Edwin McCain to Slipknot. If you can't find something pleasing in there, you're trying not to find it. But, usually the people with the loudest opinions against a type of music are the most ignorant of music in general, and aren't worth the breath wasted trying to enlighten them.
I agree with you right there.
Rock sucks major cock.
Hey that rhymed.
maybe thats because it doesnt deserve any respect? its a stupid, morally reprehensible, flop of a music style
i mean, you get these 'authentic' rappers from the ghetto romanticising violence, drugs, growing up in a slum, and how fantastic their lives are with all their money, 'bitches and hoes' and super cars, spouting racist comments and promoting reckless and bad behaviour by the populace that are entertained by the music and videos.
you know how many people i know who pretend to be like rappers because they think its cool? its not. and the sooner off people realise it, the better off society will be
Music is like candy. You throw out the "wrappers" first.
Its good to know someone here knows of Minneapolis' finest......
I can obviously tell that you haven't listened to anything from the old school and underground/alternative scenes, because you don't know what you are talking about. Rap/Hip Hop isn't always about bitches, cars, guns and money, that's mostly the mainstream stuff which is mostly shit, although some of it's okay, like Nas and Jay Z for example.
Also, only an increibly small precent of rap/hip hop songs supports racism unlike Rock and Metal which the the preferred genres of music of white supremacist groups and Satan worshippers.
Do me a favor, STFU and go back to listening to whatever kind of music you like. Same goes to you InfinateVoid.
As much as I think rap is one of the worst kinds of music (I'm not an American so that doesn't mean I'm in to Rock!) this is the same dumb kind of attitude that makes people want to ban films and video games. Open your eyes.
i do know what im talking about. like you said, the mainstream stuff, which, unfortunately, what makes up the major part of what people who call themselves 'rap-lovers' listen to. meaning regardless of what alternatives there are, my point is still valid.
as for the underground/alternative/whatever type, i dont really care about that, because as was said, only the mainstream stuff bugs me, as only it is what the problem is.
how many rap songs use the word "nigga" or some variant? yes, the word used to be anti-black. now, it is pro-black to the point that if you arent black you are a lower form of life. im all for equality and making up for the crimes and shit that happened during the times of slavery etc (im not american but nonetheless), but when said oppressed people swing back so far they become the biased, rasict, "oppressors" themselves, thats not cool.
however, i cant speak to rock music as i dont listen to it that much. just a few songs here and there, and yes, i do also listen to some rap/hip-hop songs, however the unfortunate truth is that the majority of rap/hip-hop what not is exactly as i described it in my previous post.
dont make assumptions, you'll just end up looking like a fool
now, im not here to change your point of view, i know im not going to succeed anyway. im just giving my opinion, and until rap changes to be an "intelligent" (whatever that means, in todays society...) and "conscientious" music style, my opinion is not going to change either. however, your response, complete with swearing/arrogance/ignorance and whatnot, is proof that you do in fact listen (perhaps too much) to rap/hip-hop, as such a response is indicative of someone who listens to angry, biased, hate-mongering and moral rotting 'music'
take 10 of the most popular rap songs from the past... lets say 4-5 years, and prove me wrong.
just because we have guns in games, does not make people want to go on shooting sprees (or if it does, its in the EXTREME minority).
whereas by comparison, ive seen dozens if not hundreds of people, both male and female, who want to be just like their rap "heroes", with their ghetto lifestyle, money, bitches, cars, guns, violence, drugs.
i invite you to prove my point of view wrong
I don't need to, it's rediculous. You sound latently racist.
is it racist to be racist against a group of people who are themselves racist? im not saying i am. i do have a problem with the rappers themselves, nonetheless, there is an undeniable racist element in rap music, and unfortunately the majority of such rappers are black, yes.
but i am not racist
and to claim so is just to appeal to a still-open wound in society where any little thing can be construed as racism. if i think Kanye West is a true dickhead for what he's done to Taylor Swift, or what he's done previously, im called a racist straight offf the bat, just because he happens to be black
tough shit. and shame on you for trying to silence me and scare me off by calling me racist. thats just bad sportsmanship
Personally I think everyone is latently racist to some extent, it's an animal instinct.
However your idea that gamers are fine despite the violence they enact through games all the time and yet an entire part of the community that happens to be mostly black is somehow affected by music so that they are all trying to be bad guys shows some pretty obvious bigotry to me.
i didnt say that. i said the majority of the RAPPERS are black. people of all creeds are affected (negatively) by rap music in my opinion.
but, what i did say, is that i dont see video gamers going on shooting sprees, or single handedly stopping any alien invasions. i do see rap lovers wearing the clothes they see in the music videos, copying the language they hear in the music, and simulating the social behaviour seen in the music and videos.
simple fact is you dont see any significant group of people emulating what you see in video games (except maybe racing games, but then look at Need For Speed, rap and fast cars go hand in hand so...) whereas by contrast you see a huge group of people emulating the behaviour seen in rap/hip-hop music and videos
But what you are describing is just a cultural difference, why would society be better off without this cultural difference?
you create a thread asking people to respect rap, and you go posting this sort of stuff around ? the only reaction you'll get from posting this is people answering "well then rap sucks major cock too" ...
If you want people to respect your musical tastes, start by respecting theirs.

Devil's Advocate: People started insulting rap first. Rock wouldn't have come into the thread had it not been for them.
Speaking for myself, i can say that i do like some individual songs right through all genres from Motzart to Metallica but never have i liked any individual rap music. I guess that is because it just dousn't seem to me to be be music at all, as far as i can tell it seems more like rantings with a beat!!
Now as far as rantings are concearned, yes i have liked some rap 'unmusic' because they ranted something i agreed with, but it is not a 'musical' entertainment, it is entertaining me in a different way.
why do people insist on generalising music to just Rap and Rock.... there are hundreds of other genres...
Your point? This thread is about rap and hip hop, he was insulting rock. Other genres were not referenced in the thread(because it isn't about them), which is why I did not adress them.
And you're hardly one to talk about generalizations....
Ah, so.
Being racist is genetic, then? And it is something we all share in to some extent, and just can't help it?
There was an article, just in the past couple days, that put forth that idea - that racism was genetic in nature. Might have been Time magazine, or some such.
If so, shouldn't racism be protected under the law instead of being something looked down upon and legislated against?
If we are born that way, we should revel in it. We should promote it as a normal way of life.
wow, you really are ignorant
my point is people are saying Rap is the best because it is not as white supremacist etc as Rock...
okay, Rap is the best because its not full of the crap that rock is... um, thats like saying Chocolate is the best flavour of all time because its better than vanilla... but there are other flavours... so the statement is false because it is based on false pretenses
I know how to upset people
Get all the people who like rap, line them up against a wall, and shoot them. Hey presto! You'll suddenly find the crime rate cut by 90%...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, this can be generalized to mean that all rappers are racist. Which is ignorant, but not exactly racist. If you can't tolerate a culture different than your own, then you are a racist. If that culture is racist too, that has no bearing on you. You're still a racist. You and them are just both racists.
Also, the use of the word nigger, and the variations of that word, are more about ownership of the word by the people that it was used against. It isn't racist if used in the right context at all, and in the mainstream rap you don't like, it is used in a non-racist context 90% of the time. A black man using the word "nigga" is not condescending, because they have taken a derogatory word used against them, possessed it, and now use it amongst their culture as a sign of respect. I'm not going to explain the psychology behind it, but it's simple 101 reading if you're new to the idea, if you're not, go reread it.
Kanye is a jackass. This isn't the first idiotic thing he's done, and won't be the last. He's just as bad as the other celebrities who try to influence politcs. They need to stick at what they're good at, and not crown themselves king of all opinions. The people that would call you a racist for saying this sound just as ignorant to you, as you do to us by saying that all rap is terrible and racist. You, and they, are lacking a critical viewpoint for understanding.
You're confusing cultural movements with rap. Rap is influenced by the culture that supports it. Life isn't imitating rap. There are always "posers" and "wanna-be's." That has nothing to do with Rap, other than your dislike and lack of understanding of the culture that spawned it.
Everyone here missed the point by seven miles. A LOT of Rock sucks, but there is some wonderful music in there, just like A LOT of Rap sucks, but there is some wonderful music in there. I didn't mention other musical genres because it's just redundant, but for those who have asspains about it. A LOT of Jazz sucks. A LOT of of Tejano sucks. A LOT of Classical sucks. A LOT of of Celtic sucks. etc, you get the point. Cherry picking a few songs with a limited sampling and you won't have a problem hating it. Actually taking the time to enjoy something different than your current tastes take a bit more than many are willing to give.
Rock is just another large, easily comparable genre. You can make the exact same arguement with -insert your favorite genre here-, I just chose rock as it's statistically the most popular in America.

Actually, fear of something different than you, especially things that you haven't had much contact in (in comparison) is built right into your core. Overcoming that ignorance is part of being intelligent.
[quote who="TheRezonator" reply="48" id="2374305"] so the statement is false because it is based on false pretenses
Just like your arguement that Rap is all racist, about money, hoes, drugs, etc. This attitude seems to forget the entire mantra of "Sex, Drugs, and Rock and Roll." Applying any stereotype to reality lets one easily detect the idiots from the intelligent. If you came in this thread and said, "I hate main-stream rap, but that's my only experience with it", everyone who truly likes rap will agree with you, with minor exceptions. Most of it sucks.
Just because there are idiots who support Rap like you oppose it, doesn't make either of you right. It just makes the world worse.
I tend to enjoy soul-full hip hop about hope, love, and aspiring to get out of poverty. It's funny, the song I'm listening to now is about a man who's friends daughter was killed, and how the poverty beget poverty and traps people there, teaches them to hate, thus perpetuating the pain. It hasn't mentioned any of the things you said you hated about rap, except for mentioning them as being the problems with the world. It's also not something you'll hear on the corporate radio.
my post editing is all messed up, sorry, I can't be bothered to try to fix it anymore if this last edit doesn't work. I'm too tired, but I put "-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------" around all my text for slightly easier reading.
