I was playing a small 7 planet map against a unfair ai, and when i attacked its home planet with a marza dreadnought and 5 LRF, and i completly killed the ai. it took only ten minutes. so, does anyone esle think that the ai can be horrible on some maps?
You mean like...random maps, custom maps, premade scenarios and when taking over an ally who left? Well...yes, it does lack skill there
Play a bigger map. A 7 planet map is a 7 planet map for a reason: a very quick game.
The unfair AI spams ships like crazy when it is located close to an enemy. This seems more like a bug than the usual AI idiocy. That said, I did see a hard AI suicide its cap and army against a relatively heavy militia force guarding a neutral terran planet, so I walked in and took its home planet unopposed. Seems this goes back to the AI's inability to properly evaluate the danger presented by an enemy force, and that it will not retreat a capital ship and instead allow it to die in easily preventable situations.
I think I can confirm with the unfair AI, it usually sends few capital ships (often lvl1) + fleet against my fully upgraded starbases (let's say neutral grav well, so there's just the starbase), once they hit the research also with some anti-structure ships but they go down quick to those 10/14 fighters stationed on the starbase (and the starbase itself).
After the 6/7th attempt they are almost about to bring it down (since repairs are not much quick) but..whops..my capitals appear in the gravity well, vanquish the poor offenders and repair the starbase, rinse and repeat.
Even on large maps, after they lose lvl 9 capitals this way they keep doing it (with newly built lvl1) regardless of the fact that they're just providing free experience to the enemy while losing their best units and that is costing the match.
They lose territory since they're not able to defend it after the above and the rest comes alone, they can't advance in research anymore and the already unlocked fleet cap turn them to street robbers while you don't know where to spend the resources anymore.
Generally I've noticed too that the AI isn't able to properly evaluate the danger, they just pick what they have and launch it against the enemy in suicide.
Also, apparently they don't know how to properly use a bunch of repair stations backing a defensive fleet and they never built a mass destruction weapon against me (large maps or not), never, I play Sins from when it reached the shops.
Yes, the AI is absolutely atrocious regarding starbases. One thing I noticed is that their normal retreat logic appears broken when the starbase is in a gravity well, and they will not retreat even against insurmountable force, leading to their complete annihilation. While I think they're trying to avoid the starbase phase penalty, this is much preferable to death. The AI also needs separate retreat logic for their capital ships. Loses those things so frequently it's just plain silly.
It's almost certainly the Star Base penalty, the computer got mine and immediately left the system. My fleet was there for most of it, I just got there a bit late. Anyway, the instant the starbase was destroyed, the computer retreated.
