Why when I'm running away from a demigod and activate the Wand of Speed, I stop and start attacking again? Hell, this is for any item really. I could be attacking a demigod and they start running away, I activate Wand of Speed and then I have to retarget the demigod to keep attacking otherwise if there is a minion or another demigod in range I'll switch to attacking them.
Item activation is broken. What I described above happens for HoL also and probably every item which can be activated. The item logic should be to return to whatever you were previously doing once you activate the item. If I'm in range of a demigod / minion and am moving in a direction and then activate the item I should still be moving in the direction and following the instruction that I previously issued. This bugs the hell out of me. This has got to be a bug so please put it on the list to be fixed.
Yeah, I completely agree, either this is a bug or it's just really really bad logic. I get so frustrated with those two items you mentioned, HoL and Wand of Speed. For example if I'm running away and activate HoL, sometimes my Demigod turns around and tries to attack someone and inevitably takes damage. And the two main uses of Wand of Speed - chasing and retreating - are made almost impossible because of this issue. By the time I've realised I need to retarget after activating, the fleeing Demigod has usually got far enough away to outrun me. And I've died lots of times from trying to run, activating the wand, then staying in the fray. Even one second wasted is easily enough to be killed.
This post is probably longer than it needs to be but I needed a good rant after last night's continual frustrations.
I've noticed SOMETIMES it doesnt stop you. But the fact that it does at all is VERY irritating.
The only times I've noticed it DOESN'T stop you is when you are not in range of anything you can attack. Otherwise it'll always stop you.

I just hit the F key for the item I'm activating and spam a move command most of the time.
Yeah, that's what I've been doing. It can be hard when trying to spam an attack though if you need to click a specific target. (That would be a shameful admission in a game like CS... )
Just remembered a question I had on the topic of items, is it possible to order your items, i.e. place them in different slots? Occasionally I use the wrong item if I'm getting used to it being in one slot, then it changes to another when I buy a new one, etc.
You can but you can't drag it from one slot to the other ( at least I haven't been able to do this ). What you can do is right click on the item to drop it on the ground, then move over 1-2 feet and drop the other item on the ground and then pick them up in the order you want them show up in your inventory.

One kind of obvious way to avoid the stop and turn is to activate the wand before you are going to be running/chasing someone down. With the latter, you might waste some wand usage in activating it when they don't run, but usually you'll have a good feel for whether they will be retreating or not.
Doesn't help so much with the HoL though.
You just have to anticipate the need to give another order immediately afterwards and do so right after activation. It's annoying, I hope it will be fixed, but that's how it works.
To be honest, I don't sympathize with the HoL. The thing is royally overpowered right now to begin with.
I understand the work arounds to using items the way they are. You still stop for a least .3 seconds ( giving your attacker one more hit or a change to be in range for the coupdegras ) if you keep issuing movement commands which is what I do now. I haven't gotten very good at looking into the future and knowing I need to blow my wand of speed before I actually need to blow my wand of speed.
This is just my complaint and hopefully they'll add this to their list of issues which need fixing.
Mashing a move action while using items is super risky, because of the lag it will often CANCEL your item use. If you are patient and wait until the item is actually used your risk standing there because of the bug.
Agree again. This is definitely flawed logic at work.
