This message applies not to people who are experienced at Demigod but rarely play Regulus, but rather new players that decide to use Regulus.
I just played a 2v2 game that was Oak(me) & Reg vs. Oak & TB. I used the "assassin" Oak build, and in my experience, having a Regulus ally with this build is very effective. Pentinence + me chasing/whalloping target + snipe can basically guarantee kills early on, even if the opponent has support (I might die in the process, but only at the earliest levels). However, in this situation, Regulus will usually get all of the actual kills while I simply get ridiculous amounts of assists. In fact, Regulus snipe builds will almost always be getting kills based on their teammates' performances, as Regulus is more often than not applying the finishing blow. Therefore, this fact leads me to point out two major things that newer players NEED to keep in mind...
1.) Know how to spend money.
The major problem I had in this game was the fact that I was getting very limited cash (relative to Regulus) because I kept getting assists. We had war rank 10 when they had war rank 6 because our constant killing of them served to grant us basically all map control. Yet NO castle upgrades were being bought, and I had to continue to beef up my gear in order to do my whole "run and chop while getting beat on" routine that was allowing Regulus to get his snipe kills (and I still bought things like experience, income upgrade, etc). I honestly don't know what he was doing with all his money, because I didn't notice his gear getting that much better. Long story short, they got giants and we did not and we lost that match.
To recap:Don't hoard gold and don't skimp out on citidel upgrades if you're yanking in all these kills, because you have most of your team's money!
2.) Stop getting killed.
New Regulus players seem to have this syndrome in that they have convinced themselves of being bad-asses on the field because they can take someone out from across the map. This leads them to wanting to face people head on, thinking they can just piss excellence all over that UB or that Rook. Many a time in the game mentioned above, I'd leave my partner temporarily to grab a flag in a different lane while he would farm creeps. Then the two enemy DG's would come in and he'd pop orb of defiance and wait for me to get back. Now, I had speed enhancing items, but cmon. Between the enemy Oak's Pentinence and the TB's frost spells, the scene would turn into Regulus running for his life back to base and I doing my best to whallop his attackers, who by and large ignored me. Then he would die. Sometimes, I would manage to kill one of his pursuers near our towers, but sometimes that didnt happen, and depending on how long it took me to get to them and how much damage I inflicted before Regulus died, sometimes they would just turn around and kill ME, as well.
The advice I give here to Regulus players is, if you're out there unsupported on the map, and a creep wave of yours reveals an enemy DG who you KNOW you can't outrun effectively heading in your direction, don't wait until he's fucking on top of you to run. Recognize that he is likely coming to eviscerate your nuts, and switch lanes/get help/flee. Recognize that you can get all the kills in the world and still lose the game if you manage to die so often that the opponent still has a steady income. Snipe build Regulus (and, to a lesser extent, assassin build Oak) suffer from late game efficiency because you're relying on abilities, which don't scale well after a certain point. So if you're planning on getting those kills early on, don't give the enemy the cash to hang in the game.
I love you.
Great post. I play as the UB, and I love it when Regulus players think they can take me head on in close combat. At the same time, I absolutely hate Regulus' who know to keep their distance. Or uber snipe me when my health is low and I'm running to my Citadel.
Oh, and by the way karma for you.
Also, one thing I can't emphasize enough...
-----------> Currency I <----------------
Buy this. Don't sit around on 3kish gold thinkin you'll wait to get it after your stinkin HoL; get this fucker first. In 3 min, it will have paid for itself. Do it.
Better newbie Reg tip. Mines. Mines and Snipe or Mines and Angelic Fury pick one early game to win.
Great advice especially on the first point.
I would actually prefer that the newest of new Reg players stay away from mines. Not only does it require them to be up close, but they require a degree of finesse that I sincerely doubt the player will have. Holy hand grenades they are not (well, I guess they sort of are).
So true. But the newbies are hopeless anyway.
The biggest problem as regulus is getting run down by 2 or more especially early game without range boosts. Even a short throw with them will keep you from dying as much especially after getting rank 2.
In anycase to talk about the post more, there some fundemental issues with the story here. Citadel upgrades arent a necessity you can leverage items on your character for similar field dominance. So it begs the question what was he doing with his money, if he didnt have mines he had to have Angelic Fury atleast which add some decent items should tear up the other team if they were struggling that much for field control.
This really applies to everyone, not just Regulus. Last evening I got paired with a guy who died over and over, always the same way. He'd respawn and try to grab a flag, or start shooting at a tower from inside its attack range, then an Unclean Beast would show up and he'd start fighting it. Of course the Beast spit, then started swiping at him, then (before he could fireball it to death) spit again and ran away. Then he died from the poison. He never even grabbed health potions to counter spit that I could see. At the end of the game, when they finally got their war score up to the winning level, I had three deaths (the least of anyone in the game), our enemies had four, and he had *eleven*. I got a few kills off the other team's Torchbearer, but of course I had no chance against the Beast. Once or twice I got to wherever he had decided to go on a suicide run in time to support him and finish the Beast off. Some of those times he died from the poison as he was limping away. His excuse was "I don't know this Demigod very well" ... huh? Doesn't take knowing your Demigod to stop something that's getting you killed after the first try or two.
So, that was annoying. Then I started another Skirmish game. The first one I managed to get into had him in it ... on the other side, playing Oak this time. Sure enough, he started doing kamikaze runs at our towers and flags again! So I spent the game killing him until we had enough money to buy catapults and knock their towers down. I swear I got five kills off him just from his desire to grab the health crystal flag outside his base (this was on Exile). The final score was no deaths on our side and about seven deaths for each of them.
Please don't be stupid. It makes your allies sad. It's OK to be a newbie, but what drives me nuts is people who make the same mistake over and over and over and over and over again. Just stop! Stop! Do something that has some hope of not getting you killed! Then we will be happy even if you aren't the greatest player ever, I've had some great games with newbies that were smart.
Bad thing that stupid noobs are not going to read this.
I really can't stand noobs who are epic fail with snipe. Here's a tip to new players.
Do NOT snipe people who are 7 feet away from you and at 80+% health. You would have done more damage just auto-attacking, and also would have saved mana. I mean I can understand a new player making this mistake once, but seriously, some morons just do it over and over, not realizing they're not effective at all.
You mainly use snipe when you see an enemy fleeing at a few hundred health, or when you see a 1v1 or any battle somewhere on the map, you could snipe the enemy DG, the extra 700 damage or so from you could be the difference and allow your ally to get the kill.
The OP is a good post but is for all new DG players, not just Regulus players.
On the other hand, this is a good post for newbie Regulus players:
You guys are correct in saying that these are good tips for basically any new Demigod player. I just made it out to Regulus players specifically because, by the nature of snipe and of Regulus in general, the two aforementioned points will be happening to them a LOT more often than, say, a newb playing QoT.
I disagree with everyone on this thread so far. Point #1 is a very bad point. if Regulus is getting lots of kills and hoarding gold, he should immediately be getting base items, then mage slayer, then ashkandor (assuming he isn't going for some weird support build himself). Oak should be immediately fall into a support role in such a case, getting hp items to tank and saving up for catapult rush. The reason is simple, despite the fact that Regulus has more gold than you, gold is way more valuable in Reg's hands than yours. Same with a good UB player. The point is to win, not to have equal shares of the glory.
I do agree with point 2.
Point 3 (currency) is debatable, depending on how long the game is going to last, and how badly you need the 1.8k. It should not be Regulus getting currency.
A lot of people go crazy about items, but in reality citadel upgrades are a much better investment. The only stand-out items at a high cost level are heart of life and maybe mage slayer depending on your DG. Other than those two exceptions, I rarely touch items above 2k in cost until I have well rounded citadel upgrades. Allies that don't put a penny into citadel upgrades are among the worst kind. You can come back from a death-streak if you play well enough in the mid-game (I've seen it many times), but it's very hard to come back from a situation where you're being pushed on every lane by very well upgraded mobs.
We were absolutely crushing a enemy team the other day on Crucible I believe it was in kills. They got catapults and giants about midway when we only had Angels. Suffice to say we almost lost then and there, but luckely we were able to push back and then buy catapults and giants for ourselves and we just barely won. But citadel upgrades are by far the best thing you can do, and the faster you doit then your enemy the faster you win in alot of cases. That and keeping control of the flags.
I see where you're coming from, but let's think about this a bit more.
Gold is more useful in his hands than mine. Well, no, not really. He's a snipe build Regulus, meaning he's putting focus into mana in order to be able to spam abilties and HP in order to stay alive. He can still make the switch over to an auto attack fiend, but unless he does this late game when his abilitiy skills have been maxed, he won't have things like angelic fury or maim leveled up to really see the benefits of using artifacts. Not to mention that artifacts are, in general, a MUCH greater gamble than citadel upgrades.
Then how valuable is the money for me? Well, if my gear isn't good, then he cant get the kills. So how should this go? Taking your path would leave me with sub-par gear and Regulus with uber gear but not being able to do anything with it until he hits high levels. Taking my path has both of us in moderate gear (he could even have top-grade shop gear and no artifacts) and a progressing citadel. Keep in mind that in this pair up, the Oak is NOT a tank, at least not for Regulus. Oak needs gear to have speed buffs and ideally a HoL in order to effectively damage someone to the point that Regulus CAN snipe. This is all in addition to hp/mana gear. The point is, you can't undermine the Oak's needs for Regulus being ubersauce.
Currency debatable? Maybe if you're 1v1ing, but 2v2+ makes it absolutely necessary. If you're thinking of big enough numbers to be buying mageslayers and ashkadors, then you can't look at me with a straight face and tell me not to get currency 1.
This is true, but even if he gets 4 ranks in snipe by level 10 (early enough to have mage slayer easily), he's still got 6 points into other skills, probably passive. Still, snipe builds are the weakest reg builds imo, and require more gold than he should have to spend.
Since he was basically just KSing, yes, that is true in this particular case. Oak is actually very strong in his own right, and if the situation were changed, say TB and Oak, I would suggest TB get all cit upgrades and Oak try to get ridiculous.
If you were with a good Regulus though, it is important to take the blow for the team. Low level hp + mana items + boots of speed + HoL is only about 5k. You can wait until you have the essentials before you start farming for cit upgrades. Afterall, the rush to cats should be done all at once.
In general, currency 1 is USUALLY good, but it doesn't get return on investment until about 5 minutes later in the game if it's a 2v2. Wyrmskin gloves, as an example, might easily net a kill during that time, which instantly gives that extra money. Nim Armor might save your life, denying your other team that extra money and accomplishing the same thing. So while currency is a sure thing to get your money back, there are situations where getting items are a better investment.
Holy crap!. I thought money was shared between all on the same team. =dWTB: A manuel.
Still getting used to quote tunnels on this forum...
He was going a mine/angelic fury alternate secondary to his sniping focus. I think he could have gone more for a passive approach if he wanted to. Also, I don't really see how Snipe builds require more gold than he should have to spend...maybe you can shed some light on that.
Now, I'm not denying the strength of Oak. I play him irregardless of who's on my team, so this post wasn't to say that Oak needs to rely on a Reg sniping. However, it saves me a lot of trouble, considering that assassin Oaks can easily get an opponent running and weakened, but can't always get off that second (or sometimes third) pentinence in order to finish the opponent. This is all map/enemy DG/player dependent, but having a Reg sniping eleminates some variables that would otherwise keep the enemy alive.
Keep in mind that I already was taking the blow for the team. I already was purchasing the majority of the cit upgrades and still managing to get gear. This is fine, I can live with this...but this guy was sitting on his money, and it cost us. That was my point in my previous post: waiting for artifacts is a HUGE gamble. There's the question of whether you'll be able to accumulate enough gold without upgrading while not getting killed too often, and there's the factor of whether or not you'll accumulate the gold fast enough to matter. He failed in both aspects, assuming getting an artifact was even his objective.
Also, HoL = 4.25k, BoS = 1k, Banded Armor + Scale Helm = about 1k. This is the absolute lowest I can manage with your item list, and we're still at 6.25k. Throw in the fact that I'll want at least another Helm (let's go with Faceguard for 1.75k) and then either the next armor upgrade for health/armor or Unbreakable Boots for health/mana (1.5k either way), and now I'm up to 9.5k. Throw in teleport scrolls and my personal choice of Wand of Speed for that extra "I'm gonna rape you" factor, and you're easily breaking 11-12k gold. I don't see how you can even estimate 5k, especially throwing HoL in there. 11-12k normally wouldn't be hard to get if I was getting kills on a regular basis, but I'm not, I'm getting assists. I'm also upgrading the citadel, meaning you may have to see me accumulating anywhere between 14-18k gold before I've gotten some bare essential cit upgrades AND gotten enough gear where I can stay on the field a reasonable amount of time AND manage to push myself through enemy towers to drop someone low enough to get sniped/killed by my hand.
Now I guess there's some toss-up for currency 1 in a 2v2 game, but keep in mind also that this is directed for new players. A new player that buys wyrmskin gloves may not net you anything at all, whereas spending on currency is absolutely guaranteed to help. But again, I'll give you some consensus in a 2v2 game...but 3v3+, there's really no debate; get currency 1 ASAP.
For those that play Regulus, read this 3 times. I know I did
I am the noob that lambdaman talked about in the post above. after reading and following this post, last nite we won 2 out of 3 games, and in all 3 games i have less then 4 dead. See? Not all the stupid noob don't read post like this
Also, question for Mark of Betrayer, a lot of people love them, but is it really that useful in a sniper build?
MoB is a must with mines vs minion building Generals Top that off with Parasite Egg and you will take down Generals pretty hard. Remember when he uses a skill it activates and does damage to all in his area.
But if they are good, each general has a way to negate or lessen MoB. Mist form and shield negate the damage on the general (not minions), and heal and brambles are greater than the damage done to the general. It still hurts minions which can be nice against a minion build.
I still think MoB is necessary regardless of build for its slow effect.
Eeeeh, I think mines are a greater asset than MotB, as I try never to be by myself and thus don't always need a snare, and in all honesty I find the damage component more useful than the snare. Nonetheless, I try to have both mines and MotB, though mines are a higher priority for me by far.
And the shrapnel mines have a very beefy snare to them as well.
Do not forget to get the Parasite Egg
