So i've decided to do a short, but hopefully informative write-up of how i find success as the UB.
the first thing to consider, is the UB's general stats.. you'll notice he has a higher speed than the other demigods - but sacrifices health - at least in the early stages.
So to start with, i reccomend purchasing the 1k boots that give +10% speed, should make it a lot easier to keep ontop of whichever DG you are trying to apply pressure to, and will further increase the UB's selling point - Speed!
Once you've played a few tournaments you should have enough Favour points to unlock the assasin upgrade that gives a bonus to weapon strength, with a 15% chance to increase your attakc rate by 50% for 5 seconds..
this is an extremely powerful item when employed by the UB. stacking up some other + attack rate items.. allows the 50% attack speed boost to be triggered a lot more than youd think, this combined with high Bestial Rage can be lethal - very fast.
My General skill progression is to level bestial rage and grab the first rank of the venom spit ASAP, destroying the creeps as fast as you can untill you hit level 5, and unlock post mortem - with luck/efficient play this can be achieved suprisingly fast. at this point its simply a case of farming those creeps, whilst venom spitting any DG that comes near.
I find that once i am relatively set up with semi decent equipment, at around level 7-8, it is possible to teleport to an enemy DG, and completely obliterate it in seconds if the 50% boost triggers, if it does not, then you will severely maim the enemy, but be forced to withdraw in most cases. - Don't forget to apply Venom spit at the start of the combo.. your physical attacks when sped up, mixed with the venom make for some jaw dropping Ouch factor - enough to make my mate rage-quit quite a few times
Haven't had much sleep tonight, been up playing some lan fights with a couple of mates - so if i've missed something out, or if something doesn't make sense, please tell me and ill add more detail!
Summary:
Play to UB's Strengths, get +attack speed and + speed items
Live to fight again, if its gone tits up, RUN - use that speed - dont give the enemy that gold boost
Suprise is key.. make use of teleports, or warps, distractions.. anything you can to get a suprise strike, if all goes well you can disable an enemy in under 5 seconds.
Don't bother trying to do an all out 1v1 with the above setup, at least not untill you have leveled up a bit.
soften up a group of enemies by Spitting at the weakest enemy, and then run, and return and spit, be annoying, frustrate them, wait for one to make a mistake by overextending - then grab the kill.
----------------
That should do for now, if you'd like more detail on items/skills @ which levels etc, go ahead and bring it up, i'll make a note of what its all called next time i tab back into the game
regarding ooze,
i agree that 1 point in Ooze is actually a pretty good investment. it does help mow down creeps and the debuff even at level 1 is worthwhile. i definitely don't like to concentrate on this ability though because paying health makes it very risky and hard to maintain.
in the late game once sufficient amounts of +health/second and life leech have been obtained Ooze is alot easier to deal with and starts to become a nice addition. before then i really lay off and focus almost entirely on Spit, Beast Within, and Poison Claws. the strategy is to spend the first 10 levels roaming the map trying to ambush and gank enemy DGs and then at level 10 get Plague and start pushing into their territory. the strat works great for me so far.
Personally, I disagree on Ooze but that is just my playstyle. Early on, UB can't take much of a beating (well..he can't later either but I digress). ANYTHING that reduces my HP is verboten to me.
I handle UB like an Apache attack chopper; speed, speed, speed, hide in the fog or out of range...when I see a wounded DG, an undefended flag or a mass of creeps with no DG around I unmask, swoop in to hoover up the XP or get the DG kill, and retreat. UB's main assets to me are his speed...Spit (what a perfect harassing weapon), and Grasp (stun to allow towers or allied DGs to finish off an enemy). So mana, +movement speed and +attack speed are my comfort zones. Everything, everything EVERYTHING else is gravy.
I just upgrade Spit and Inner Beast (I think?) every chance I get until maxed, plus 1 point in Grasp, 1 in Bestial (the 25% weapon damage boost), and max out to Plague II. Then any leftover points go to the base "+" at the bottom of the screen. Turning and trying to run from this guy is just not wise. You're better off standing and trying to kill it off or inflict as much damage as you can before you die. The odds of escape are very very low.
By the time you cast Warlord Punisher, my UB build would have you down near half health with a very significant movement speed difference in favor of me, and dead within the next couple seconds. On top of that, the 300 dmg + 400 mana drain would hardly nick me, at any level. If you're having success with the Warlord Punisher against a UB, you're not playing a skilled UB player.
In essence, your counter to an un-skilled UB player, is a death sentence against a skilled UB player. You might want to reconsider your options.

what does Warlord Punisher do? some kind of mana drain thing? not sure why a Beast would worry about that much. Venom Spit is just gravy, the real DPS comes mainly from the claws. UB has a sickeningly fast attack speed and can really abuse crit items and on attack proc items like the Wyrmhide gloves.
Warlord punisher gives a +30 dmg passive, and you can cast it in I believe 2 seconds (30 sec cooldown) , for a chain lighting 300 dmg, and 400 mana drain to whoever the lighting jumps too. I use it occasionally, as it's enjoyable to use on forwarded minions out of range of a general, and have the lighting jump though all of his minions and then to him, very fun.
I played 4 games with UB last night and totally mauled the others.. as soon as i get foul grasp i own everything.. heart+mageblade and it's over. I never use Ooze, i feel that i need the HP it drains in early game, first blood is important!
I can pretty much hold my own using most any Demigod vs any other DG (were talking AI here), but not with UB; it kills me every time, and is level 20 long before anyone else. no matter what I do. I guess I"m just lucky I've not met a human player using UB, cause I'm sure that's doubly deadly. I would say "OP", but I'm too noob to know.
Started out with Rook, then took a try at UB. Haven't done anything else since (other than a round with Regulus, which I found too easy and kind of OP)

Once you get comfortable with being a ganker in the truest sense of the word, UB is amazing. With the right items, you can solo a citadel while the enemy team is attacking you.
I use UB in same way as Blakeybastard. As you said this build is very cheap and allows to invest money in citadel upgrades which I believe is essential to win. Also, in late game, the damage output and attack speed is INSANE + % on hit items works out pretty well.
To add to your post, I find that having a mageslayer starting from lvl 10 is crucial, especially if you put 1-2 points in ooze. So here are the items I use: boots of speed, the 3 best gloves + mageslayer. This gives huge DPS if you max out stats.
However I feel that this build lacks a bit of mov speed, especially againt TB, lord erebus, and regulus. I've played a game last night and really couldn't finish off my oppents because they seemed to run awy with the same speed as my UB, even if i use wand of speed.
I also play sometimes on nightmare mode againts AI UBs. I can't believe how fast they run. About 1.5x if not twice faster than me which makes them IMPOSSIBLE to kill. So is there a way to improve this great build to make UB faster??
UB is probably the easiest Demigod to play cuz everytime I play him I get alot of easy kills. I never used Ooze for my build because anything that reduces UB's HP is bad, given the fact he starts with really low HP. I would have Foul Grasp + Spit and Inner beast, Port Mortem, and one point into Rage for destroying towers. UB is just simply amazing. For starting gear, I would always get mana helm to spit more...then scaled armor for staying power.
I play Unclean Beast with a focus for melee combat and tanking.
Skills -> Spit -> Inner Beast -> Attributes -> and I change up the other ones. I always go for full spit though, it's great for when they are running, as well as adding to the early DPS.
items -> Mage Slayer (the life steal and attack speed are incredible) -> either the Bulwark of the Ages or the Ashkandor -> Both cloaks
I do whatever I can do max damage speed and stats. I get to the point where I can tank several heros and regen faster than I take damage.
I like Ooze, but only once I hit the higher levels. The damage/drain ratio isn't good until you put a few points into ooze, and by the laterish game 140 d/s isn't really the greatest anyway. However, by the time I can shrug off 50 dps, the -40% attack speed aura is sweet. That easily negates an artifact from every enemy in the vacinity...
Ever since I learned that post mortem doesn't work on plagued targets, I have stopped putting points into plague. With 3-5 well-placed hits you can completely destroy a creep wave with post mortem. The only time I might consider putting a point into plague is if the majority of my opponents are being very annoying with using HoL, otherwise it would be a detriment to my abilities to waste a point on plague.
i dislike unclean beast
he
makes me a sad panda bear =[
Unclean Beast is.....well a beast. Hes hard for a Rook to counter but he IS counterable for me. Especially if I can get the Symbol of Purity favor item to purge one of his spits on me. And some UB players tend to be firebrands and get a bit too full of themselves and chase me into my tower farms heh. But yeah, the games I lost to a UB player tend to be I let them farm too much and get ashkandor or some other nutty stuff till hes too tough to beat.
I love UB, however I've found that he's very easily countered with a +speed stacking Reg who, in the mid-late game, just destroys UB too fast.
I used to bad mouth ooze a lot, but after doing the math then hopping in and proving the math I can't say it's not a good ability.
even at level 1 you're taking 20dps to yourself, but dealing 35dps to everything around you AND stopping 10% of their autoattack. That right there is a good deal. Once you get to the end with 140dps and stopping 40% of their autoattack, you're unstoppable with decent armor. Also remember it stops 40% of the autodamage from everything around you, and that's almost guaranteed to save you more than 50dps to yourself even if you ignored the 140dps it puts out.
