So now the war has been raging for ten years and the defenses are getting so thick that the war is going to stagnate. Fleets will get chewed to shreds by capable defensive opponents. A few systems will trade hands but the lines will stabilize. So where do we go from here. More defenses, copying of technology from each other?
I think the next expansion should include espionage, getting planets without having to use a fleet. Piracy will no longer pay as the areas thicken with defenses and they will probably hire out as mecenaries to support fleet operations.
The stalemate will continue until the races build giant motherships. You need an entire empire to build one, but it will let you crash through fixed defenses, and break the stalemate. Ships so massive that the capital ships just hang in it shadows.
My few ideas for the races:
Motherships should require systems dedicated to building motherships. They should have to have all the shipyards, supply yards, and at least 4-5 constructors in the gravity well. This would limit which planets can build them and make taking the necesaary planets important. Although the TEC mother ship should be easier to construct than the other races.
Their abilities should reflect an extension of abilities they already have:
TEC should get an ability similar to their area effect missile attack that encompases the whole grav well. Thier mothership should also allow the construction of ships where ever it is and faster if it is in its own gravwell. They should get a massive nuclear strike on any planet they hover over.
Advent mothership should be able to carry a fighter swarm as well as bolster its fighter and repair any losses instantly once per battle. They should also get an upgrade to their capital ship's main gun that allows them to remove entire planets from the game, leaving only asteroids in the wake. I would recommend that the races get shields that would mitigate this effect on planets, at least till the shield generators are destroyed.
Vasari should get an upgrade to their colony ships ability to extract resources. The mothership would strip the entire planet and leave a molten planet in its wake. The vasari need some more improvements to their colonizing ability of red planets so they get a bigger pop boost than they currently have. Also the mothership should be able to warp itself to any plnet in the solar system with any frigates in its immediate area. It should then be able to shunt all it power into opening a gate to allow fllets to follow it. This would eliminate its weapons till the gate shuts down.
I know this is probably wishful thinking but I hope they continue with expansions for a while to come.
is there a chance to get an idea of when we get more info just what exactly or how diplomacy and pirates get some love? in beta I think I heard that the devs would also have liked to expand minor factions, any chance for that?
Frogboy, what do you think of my idea for letting players join games? It isn't technically a 'drop-in' feature, as in other games like WiC. Do you think it would work?
Well, if you can't kill people easily now, you'd have to please them... So I'd go with diplomacy.
And that thing chasing the Vasari seems really powerful... don't want it killing you, do ya? Perhaps it just hates everyone and that's how the pirates get a nice boost.
I'm thinking the expansions will be Defense (Entrenchment), Diplomacy (?), and Destruction (?).
But starbases should still be capable defenses... just if we have a supership it won't be able to, say, solo versus a starbase.
Perhaps the mothership should be something like the superweapon? So one would have to tech to that first, then research the supership. And cracking a planet into smaller planets (taking a planet and separating it into two or three asteroid fields and capturing the extractors, at the penalty of no logistics and tactical slots) would be interesting.
If you re-read, I negated myself
I was basing my comment on the fact that you can't do that with desyncs, then I realized that the reason you can't do that with desyncs is there's no way to tell who was right / wrong, and worse yet if it happens once, it's almost certain to happen again.
That's for the semi-random generation, right? Not using the map editor?
At the moment, they're using an indirect method to connect fleet size to population.
Maintenance was discarded back in beta 1, because it wasn't fun to play. They implemented planet-based fleet points, then decided that that didn't work -- it made it too hard to 'bounce back' from loosing a planet (i. e. increases steamrolling). So they moved to the current system, where your resource base indirectly determines your maximum fleet cap. As you increase your fleet cap size, the resource drain increases, and if it gets too high, you're economy stalls out. Sure, you can have 2000 points worth of ships, but you can't actually buy anything new from that point on kind of thing.
i would like to see a STORY or campaing added some kinda back ground with mabey small vids before and after the missions. a forth race mabey either an alliance of advent/Tec or advent/vas sorta thing.
Mabey the race that forced the vas out of there home system.
Graphics are good in this game but i think the creators could do much much better if they invest the time to it rather than leaven it to the public which have done a great job so far. Such as have chunks of all ships remain for a short time like some of the cas caps do, along with some building Starbases for sure "since of there size relisticly there would be somthing left.
Strike craft should cost something to rebuild weather it be 0.2 per for each min or like buying new for 5 5 5 where strikecraft dies your reclick causeing you to pay the fee. "but can be done in a mod i know a few are working on it "
mostly i would like to see more control and better eye candy but thats just me and great job so far stardock
Cursed
If I recall correctly:
1st Expansion = Defense (Entrenchment)
2nd Expansion = Diplomacy (Make friends, influence people... then gank them with your other buddies)
3rd Expansion seems to be airy fairy but I'm sure I read something, somewhere that it'd be single player focused. But don't quote me.
at more races 3 come on there needs to be about 10
I'd agree with Frogboy: Diplomacy.
In particular, do something about those one-sided missions AIs like to give you.
My opinion? Revamp the mission system. Make it two sided, so we can do to the AIs as they do to us. Perhaps make the missions less specific and more sensible.
Either that or get rid of it? I'm not entirely sure I see the point of it. Perhaps other parts of the game should control how much they like/dislike you. Something along the lines of the Civilization games, perhaps?
The fluff lends itself nicely to 4. TEC, Advent, Vasari and ... the Xeelee (or whatever the hell is chasing the Vasari across the galaxy). I think 10 different races would be a touch overkill unless your talking about 3 or 4 primaries and factions within them.
It would be nice if you could barter free passage through a neutral gravity well; after all two light frigates aren't going to do much when your cap ship appears spitting death and looking for a fight.
How about a last man standing style game option featuring the Vasari's mysterious enemy? After a certain amount of time (player determined or random) their fleets appear at each player's respective homeworld and proceed to anihilate everything planet-by-planet. Players would be forced to expand outwards to escape the invaders and accelerate the destruction of their opponents, or construct elaborate defensive positions to try and delay their inevitable end, and fight off any players who try the first option. Last empire remaining obviously wins (kind of).
I can also see fun being had by capturing a planet within enemy lines and setting that as your home planet just before the invasions begin.
For the 3rd Expansion
Sins : Conquest
Frontlines have been breached , forces from all three sides have become scattered. The TEC Government has collapsed , suffering a hugh credit crunch. Vasari factions start to lose their loyalty as local vasari warlords rise to power. The Advents unity has all but dissolved away leading to fanaticism and cults.
Rogue Factions now begin to spread out , leaving the sanctuary of their starbases. No longer led by higher powers , factions seek only one thing - survival. As resources were drained from the long entrenment , to survive they had to explore and seek new territory. No longer could a faction maintain itself behind their defences.
Research shifted from defences to offences. Advanced Siege weapons of mass destruction were tested and developed . Gigantic SuperDreadnoughts were developed to annihilate anything that got in their way. Starbases became obsolete , factions became mobile , seeking out new territories and retreating away from others.
In an era of Desperation , Survive and Conquer...
I would like to see Bio Weapons. In real life, miltaries research these types of weapons all the time because it's cheap and effective. Let's say the TEC have developed a virus that halts the culture spread of the Advent. So in turn, the Advent would have to research a cure. The use of bio weapons would be nice step from just dropping bombs on a planet. Maybe there are levels of bio weapons from ones that slow the growth of your planet to the level of a super weapon.
Who says it was a race?
My opinion is that the next expansion will be either one of two things
1. Offensive
or
2. Culture
in my mind nothing else would really make sense. and then even out of those 2 my money is on Culture. and i saw on G4 a way long time ago back when they were still designing Entrenchment that the next expansion was going to be more or less economy/ Culture based. now of course this could be totally wrong as i dont have the best memory in the world but i think thats what it is and where my money lies.
They've already said, the next expansion is diplomacy focused. They've also stated that 'pirates are getting love'.
hmm I guess, since both sides just digs in, but then again, each are just as afraid of the other attacking, yet don't want to attack themselves, that I think is sorta like WWII
I like this idea, but I don't like the idea od super dreadnoughts.
How frequent are these expansion packs going to be? Every other month? Once a year?
Randomly, depending on how much leg work Ironclad need to do for it I'd suspect. It's not like they can throw a large number of devs at it. My finger in the wind guess would be six - eight months.
/Returns to coaxing gpac to write sbtl atoms.
well, if you look at it logically, entrenchment 1 1/2 - 2 months in beta, give or take. combine that with the work necessary to actually get to beta, throw in the original schedule of 1st in mid november, 2nd in feb/ mar, 3rd in early summer, and you should have some kind of educated guess. so, for me, a six month period seems a reasonable estimate. but then we don't know how much work is already done for the others. could be that the delay saw some effort on them too.
I say the next expansion is already in the works, my guess is that ironclad has been probably working at the expansion since late Novenber to Mid-December. looking on how long for first expansion pack to come out and compare it to most other games, which is based on a year schedule but also since sins is based on a game engine, i would say 6 - 9 months
I think this is one of the major things missing from Sins as well, but it is expensive to do for a 10$ expansion. However, I have a suggestion as to how this could be done:
Consider how Valve handles Team Fortress 2 maps: as the community makes popular and well done maps, they polish and 'cannonize' them, making them official maps.
IC could do something similar to get a campaign into Sins. Add scripting support and hold a contest. Select the best campaigns, merge as necessary. Polish, and voice. Bake at 350 till brown.
I would personally like to see somthing that lets you make and/or move gravity wells to help you circumvent defences. as well as a ship that costs a hell of alot that can destroy neutral planets turning them into asteroid fields. It would be a sort of if i can't keep it you can't either wepon
