Where to start with that. How bout that entire statement might be the "more retarded" than naming your kid Hitler. The comparisons stated there aren't even close to being related. For one, Obama wasn't named after a homicidal maniac...most likely they didnt even know who Saddam WAS when they named him.
And what kind of crazy thinking is it when you start replacing letters in names to prove your point. Do you also think we should ban all people with the name Miller from owning a gun, working in law enforcement, or holding a job where children are involved? Because if you change the "M" to a "K", its KILLER. Holy Shit, they are killers! Wake up people!

I'm all for preventing stupid people from screwing up kids' lives, but any kind of parenting license is a very bad idea. Sure, it might start out with good intentions, but it wouldn't be long before "intelligence" was redefined as "adheres to current popular political/religious ideology", and "health" was redefined as "possesses whatever arbitrary amount of financial resources the licensing authority says is necessary to provide a healthy home environment", and "parenting skills" gets changed to "compliance with standardized government recommendations regarding child rearing and educational curriculae."
In other words, there's no guarantee that the people issuing the licenses will be any less stupid than the ones applying for them.
You're missing quite a few points here, even if you intended that sarcastically.
1. Obama was born before Saddam was in office, NOT named after a pre-existing genocidal dictator.
2. Hussein is actually a fairly common name in a large part of the world, and shared by a few other world leaders at one point or another. Case in point, King Hussein of Jordan - who was not a paticularly homicidal maniac.
2A. To further demonstrate this, consider kids named Joseph. Stalin was arguably as bad as Hitler, but his first name was already popular in large parts of the world. For that matter, Iosef is still fairly popular among the Russian-speakers of the world.
3. Adolf is not, and never has been, a popular name in the US, or for that matter anywhere outside the German-speaking world. This makes it pretty obvious when someone names a kid Adolf, even if they don't slap him with Hitler as well.
4. As far as I know, Osama is actually not-uncommon as a name in the Arabic world. Expecting no one to reuse the name would be the equivalent of blacklisting George because of our current Bush fiasco. Besides, Obama != Osama.
Not to mention the shocking number of children that are started without (marriage) licences now. No reason to expect THAT to change, even if someone came up with some sort of mandatory birth control anyway. Short of reversible birth control forcibly administered at age 10, it's just not going to happen.
Alot of people in the middle east are named Hussein. Its a pretty common muslim name. Just like Osama.
Being named Adolf or Hitler is fine to. But parents calling there kid both is a bit strange tbh. And like somone else said. Obama was born and named long before Saddam Hussein was in office. So now everyone whos name is Hussein should go change it? I dont think so.
Difference is the parents knew who Adolf Hitler were when they named there kid. Trying to make som political statement by giving your kid some obscure name just seems wrong to me.

Obama was NOT named after Sadam. Hussein just happens to be a really common name in Islamic countries. That would be like being upset because someone has the name Smith because some really evil dictator was named Smith. Not the same thing. Same thing with Obama and Osama. Not blame Ed Smith because his first name happens to sound similar to Ted Bundy's first name. That's lunacy.

I once heard about a guy here in Belgium who wanted to call his son Darth Vador, and some other guy who wanted to call his child obi wan.
As a supporter of the "I don't care" policy, I don't care if they call their children strange names, but i bet the children themselves will care, and every school bully and every person they'll ever encounter in their lives for that matter. What if nobody ever accepts to employ them because of their stupid names ? (Changing name isnt necessarily a solution as their parents will then hate them, and maybe they still love their parents despite de lousy naming)

Hmmm... I named my youngest Arashi with the kanji which literally translated means "storm mountain". His English name is simply Storm. I think it is a fairly unique name in the States. Moreover it truly fits the tyke given his rambunctious and tetchy nature.
I will now consider naming my next one Damien Thorn for a first and middle name. After all given the three older brothers he would have and their inherent personalities, as a group I could call them the "Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse!".

When something has to be licensed it would mean (specifically in this case in the United States) that the government (on the national level, since a state could start it but it would be nullified quickly by national policy) would have to be in charge of screening person(s) for the license, tracking folks with the license (much like the DMV or Equivalent State Agency) and the enforcement of infractions to the laws which would need to be in place to require licensing. Now the ethos of our country is equal rights of life, liberty, and the "Pursuit" of happiness, which would allow for such licensing in theory, but would require several Supreme Court Judges to be behind to uphold the law (if its passed).
The only true way that this would have a chance at passing is if the voting citizens of the united states realize the amount of funds being hemorraged yearly on wellfare and similiar programs, in which ultra low income person(s) recieve an extra stipend for having more kids, though sadly the ability of the government to ensure that these monies are spent appropriately are more or less non-existent and generally only comes to light after some sort of crime is committed and an investigation is opened.
I highly recommend the movie Idiocracy which explains one of the more plausible outcome of our consitent generational degredation of American society.
Perfect world, guys get their tubes tied young (greatly reduces the risk of pregnancy but not 100%) until they are married for anywhere between 5-10yrs with the finanical stability (granted the world economy is in constant flux and would have some years with less babies) before they could recieve a reversal on the procedure thus allowing them a fair shot at having a kid, and being able to raise him appropriately (this of course meaning the essentials are being provided which in an increasing number of child abuse cases are showing have not and are not being met)

I question the logic in Germany's holocaust denial laws equally with their game violence idiocy, but trying to pretend it's the Jews fault that WW2 happened is fucking pathetic. I'm still not a big fan of abuse and curse words because they pretty much guarantee a less than amicable exchange (take for example our last exchange), however if it was ever deserved, Luckmann's response was it.
This doesn't mean that we're suddenly best buds but I at least will keep an open mind. Just keep in mind that I don't assume that I'm always right nor that I have any claim to sainthood, but I do tend to look askance at being called an idiot simply for holding a contrary opinion.

p.s. I wouldn't kill, but I might die to defend the rights of free speech that underly all this nattering. I finally saw Apt Pupil recently, and the ease with which the teenage protagonist scored a full replica of an SS officer's uniform reminded me of how different things are here in the U.S. vs. Germany when it comes to all things Nazi. We have far more to learn from that history than do the Germans, I suspect, but our conqueror's distance appears to be letting us have more conversation sooner about the business.

The parents that named their kid after adolf Hitler..well they are either just asking for it, or they were ready to take the abuse on behalf of their child.
If we want to discuss the parent's grades of retardation, we should discuss the fact that they named their daughter Aryan Nation, which isn't even a proper name. Isn't there some control in the U.S. as to what you can name your child? Damn this, I'm moving to the states - I'm going to name my child Sir Galahad McPoopyPants von Luckmann the Fifth or something.
