It would be convenient if a fence was brought to front when rolled out instead of remaining behind other windows.
Hello,As mentioned various time, Fences is on desktop level application, which by default can not appear on top of any opened Windows. That is why Fences introduce hotkey to let Fences appear above any open windows, while, from my observation, Freeze UI all open Windows temporary.
Thank you,Basj,Stardock Community Assistant.
Hello Basj,
I don`t think that it freezes anything. The show fences icon in taskbar as well as the show fences hotkey bring the fences to front but hide all other desktop icons and leave Windows in place (why hide desktop icons?). What I would like to have is that only fences are brought to front when rolling down a fence or at least when clicking on the header.
BTW: The hot corner function isn't working as expected at least for me. Regardless of the settings in the drop-down boxes, only a left click has any effect (hide all windows including Stardock docks). A right click has no effect.
Having fences roll up behind opened apps is a major bummer for me.
Fences is a desktop icon management tool. By definition it works with the desktop icons at desktop level where they exist.
Microsoft determined the order at which focus of "what becomes on top" is arranged.
What you need to ask yourself is..."does any program on the planet allow the change of level of a desktop icon to be shown above any open window?"
The answer will be "no." The Microsoft Windows desktop 'Z-Order' cannot be readily messed with simply because Normal Expected Functioning [system management of input] will be lost and confusion will reign.
Windowblinds was one of the first to push the boundaries...with the option to lock a window on top of others, with or without focus [a handy tool], and Fences 'peak' enabling the seeing of the icons under a window is also a 'messing with the Z-order', however the shifting of click-through focus really should not be what it's about.
Docking programs are available for a windows-level display of launch icons as they are entirely different to something operating at the Desktop Icons level.
Sorry to disagree Jafo. But that's exactly what the 'Show Fences' button in taskbar does (see image). It brings the fences to the foreground. I would like this "impossible magic" to happen automatically when the fence is rolled out, or at least when the user clicks on it without having to click on the taskbar first. It's ok with me if all fences come to front at this time like with 'Show Fences' button. A fence behind a window makes absolutely no sense (at least to me).
Yes, that's the other trick I mentioned...being able to focus to the desktop icons via fences...tricking the Z-order rules.
That's enabled by a specific button, not an effect of a mouse-over/rollup change. The key controlled focus defines what takes the cursor attention - the whole reasoning behind the Z-order level rules.
I don't know, perhaps there could be an "advanced feature set' for the serious geek to totally confuse both him and the OS as what is going to be clicked on as an input... where the warning is "Beware...results may vary" ...You think you are ordering a pair of shoes on Ebay but instead you just launched an ICBM and script writers are knocking at your door...
Nothing is ever impossible. I always thought the 'Peek' option was a 'Bridge Too Far', but the boffins 'Made It So' ...
My programmer heart sees your point ...
