I am trialling Fences.
In relation to the Folder Portal feature.
I wish to be able to view the folders as a list...
So... wish to have the scrolling bar at the right hand side instead of the bottom.
Is that possible.
It is more natural to be able to scroll vertically with a mouse, rather than having a vertical column of names appear and then have to action to move to the next block of names.
Moved to Fences area
I think I found out where the configuration of the scroll bar should be.. but looks like it is not available.
Amazing... for something so obvious.
Hopefully I am wrong... as the Folder Portal is unusable in its current form... and that is the main motivating factor to consider fences.
Regards.

Hello,Sorry to hear you are having issues. But, if you set your Portal Fences to -> View->List that is what you get, this is the same layout if you set the view->List in your Windows Explorer. If you wish to have a scroll on the right vertically, please select View->Details. Something below. If you wish not to see those other columns, you could disable it by right click on the column bar and un-tick each of it.
Thank you,Basj,Stardock Community Assistant.
I will try this when I return next week to my office and the installed app. I will not sign up/ subscribe until this has been resolved and I am aghast at the length of time to get a reply.. ie trial period almost expired.
Sorry, but I replied to your question in less than an hour from your last post. Please note my post date and time.
Thank you,
Basj,Stardock Community Assistant
Thanks for responding so promptly... but....
I only got notice of your reply this Friday 16th May ...
And here are all my incoming forum notices...
As I had not received any update and as I knew I would be travelling, I feared the trial period would pass before I got a response.
I am pleased to note... I followed your instructions...
and it looks like I have the view as required....
I have a few days left of the trial and will check / test your app as best I can in that period.
Regards,
Matt O'Brien, Dublin, Ireland.
And resultant view..
The big advantage (apart from simplicity.. is that the scroll wheel allows me easily slide down to entries lower in the sort order..
Great, glad to hear that.
My trial has ended (several days ago) before I could finish my testing... as expected... so be it.
Unfortunately I could not post this before it expired because this forum was not available.
I keep getting the following message... despite having connectivity to all other web sites and I have a 1 Gb fibre connection.
I tried on multiple times on multiple occasions...
Anyway...
The following are the findings of my evaluation.
I figured out items 4,5 and 6.
I may consider purchasing a licence depending on the answers to points 1, 2 and 3.
I am happy to (and used to) reading the manual. So happy if you explain here or send me the urls for relevant documentation.

Would like to change the font size of the folders listed.
Ideally per individual Folder Portal…
Do not want to change the default windows font sizes.
I have a large screen … and very useful to have some key contents of the desktop with a bigger or smaller font.

Show /Hide system/hidden folders or files
This is vip. I use ExFat drives on Mac and Windows. Mac inserts lots of hidden system folders and I do not want these appearing in a Folder Portal.

Thanks for the quick reply.
1. Glad to see the Fence Title font is configurable. That is useful.
Have not found details on how to configure font for the actual listed contents.
2. I see no reference in the documentation to controlling visibility of hidden or system folders. Maybe covered in the next point, but not keen to configure this per Fence.
3. Rules Per Folder.
I see reference to the Rules per folder in the documentation… but
a. It is not intuitive for me to set rules ( eg hide system files, only show jpgs, exclude xmp files). I tried previously… while trial was active…
b. The documentation does not provide any worked example.
And again.. thanks for the quick reply.
The font for the actual listed contents, and visibility of hidden or system folders are controlled by Windows.
Remember, Fences is an app that works with the Windows Desktop only. The rules section only applies to regular Fences, not Folder Portal Fences.
Not sure what you mean by Rules per Folder?
I'm sure Basj will be along in a few hours, and he is better versed in the use of Fences.
No pressure from me on time.
I live in Dublin Ireland… where it is now close to 11pm. I am also conscious it is the start of a weekend.
This stuff is not mission critical. I am spending time on it as I can see potential.
I am an expert at dealing with enterprise level datasets and efficient workflows and apply these norms to my personal use of phones, tablets, pcs, etc. Win 11 is a serious disappointment… I am trying to make it usable.
There are two features which are important to me.
A. My main data drive is a very fast Nvme thunderbolt external drive. This is plugged into my main workstation most of the time, but travels with me and is used with a MacAir when travelling.
Mac Os puts lots of hidden folders and files on a disk, which are hidden from most users, but appear when viewed on a Windows machine. Even worse… Mac does not delete most files but renames them in a way that the MacOS ignores them. Again, they are visible and a nuisance in Windows.
So, it is vip that I can hide these system / hidden files… I will post an example tomorrow.
B. I expected the Fences Folder Portal to have the ability to optionally filter ( via user choices) the content. A simple example is that I may only want to see jpgs in a folder.. ie. I will use other tools to fully explore a folder but on my desktop I want to use it to zone in on what is vip to me. So, I am proficient in the use of Directory Opus, which is extremely configurable and powerful. However, like Explorer… it takes up a lot of screen real estate to use properly.
Hello,
From what I know,
Correct me if I am wrong. But isn't a traditional Fence more or less a manipulation of desktop icons and thus adheres to desktop icon rules and settings. Whereas a Fence portal is more an extension to the file explorer and adheres to the rules and settings listed in file explorer? For example hidden files in a fence portal are only seen if they are also shown in the file explorer settings.
*Folders are pretty easy to set. They are listed in type based rules you just need to check mark it and select which fence you want new folders to go under.
*If you mean the download, document, ect options, I would strongly recommend using a folder portal instead. Otherwise you would have to set your downloads to go directly to your desktop and then set up the download fence.
*File types are a bit more tricky.
Select "target-based rules" > "link target contains" and then click under "the link target" drop down box and select "by type" and then in the third drop down box you can select the type of file you want.
Next, the new rule will be saved in your "type based rules" list and you will need to check mark the new rule and select the fence you want it under
Yes. This is what I was trying to convey, but you have described it much better. Thank you.
Request To StarDock.
As my trial has expired and as I have no means of contacting StarDock directly.. can I ask the following query.
I am happy if the response is to my email address if you want to keep the reply c9nfidential.
Query.
If I purchase a 1 year licence , can I get a credit for this licence if I upgrade to a perpetual licence during the life of my subscription.
That would allow me to test out some of the suggestions here.
I am grateful for all the helpful responses. Hopefully I will be able to summarise my results.
Not sure about credit for moving to perpetual license, but do know that the release version of Fences 6 is due out any day now.
My trial ver is Ver 6.
The trial you were running is a Beta version. The actual release version is what will be available in the next few days.
Thanks…
There are no discounts for Fences permanent licenses at this time. Definitely put some thought into what you want ahead of time; if permanent licenses are important to you then that is probably where you should go. Just understand that Fences is averaging a new release every 1 - 2 years right now.
