We have a Fences 5.82 build to help us collect information to solve some issues reported shortly after the release of Fences 5.81 regarding Fences and icon placement as well as some reports that ‘layouts’ are not being restored.

More logging included for some remaining issues

It should fix clients with the "Fences scrunched up at bottom of the monitor" problem
It will NOT fix clients that are unable to save layouts. We are going to continue to solicit reports from clients directly.
If you can get your PC in a working state, generally seen by starting with just one monitor, that would be ideal.
After that, create the conditions to put it in a ‘broken’ state by adding more monitors to the point that your reported issues can be seen. Please also work to restore a prior ‘working’ Layout even if it fails.
Even if you cannot get it in a working state, that it is always ‘broken’ no matter what you so, please proceed with the rest of the instructions.
Once the issue has been reproduced, please open the Fences config and go to:
‘About’ → ‘Troubleshooting’ → ‘Create error report package for technical support’
Fill out the form
After Fences collects and zips the logs, it will open a Windows Explorer window where it was created as well as a webpage for it to be uploaded to:
Please upload the zip file and let us know in the forum thread that you have in this thread.
Video of the processhttps://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/2024-08-23_11-47-01amcguinness.mp4
We will review the logs and potentially contact you for more information.
Thank you all for the time, effort, and patience.

Just uploaded the support package after rebooting and recreating the issue. However, when now restoring a layout backup from July 26th 2024 (working state), probably v5.80 was installed at the time, the layout is then properly restored on all monitors, which isn't something that happened on v5.81 (tested restoring the same July 26th backup). Switching back and restoring a v5.82rev4 backup layout saved today right after placing everything back to where we want them, the issue is reproduced and the layout isn't properly restored. Thanks guys,
I can confirm that after the second reboot after upgrading from 5.04 (I had reverted to this build), the position of fences seems okay with 5.82r4. On first reboot it moves the fences to the bottom of the screen as before, I corrected them (again) and after the next reboot they were still in the correct position.
Hi drt42, we may have been able to resolve this issue – please give https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/Fences5_5.8.2.5-j132-Setup.exe an install / reboot, verify it says "v5.82 Revision 4" in the About tab of settings, then adjust your group positions and/or restore a snapshot. Your layout should be properly preserved upon next reboot. Please let us know, thank you
Hi AmigaLink, we may have been able to resolve this issue of your groups getting scrunched up on bottom – please give https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/Fences5_5.8.2.5-j132-Setup.exe a shot? You'll want to install / reboot, verify it says "v5.82 Revision 4" in the About tab of settings after reboot, then adjust your group positions and/or restore a snapshot. Your layout should be properly preserved upon next reboot.
Please let us know if that's not the case! And there are some new instructions at the top of the post for uploading an error report if this "v5.82 Revision 5" does not resolve the issue. Thank you!
Happy to report that version 5.8.2.4-j131 works correctly for me!
Thanks for your fast response on this!
Pleased to read and thank you for the feedback.
Rev 4 seems to be working for me.
Hi hrmediagroup, continuing to work through your report.
Question – could you try loading your 2024-07-01 backup and seeing if any good results there? Seeing a lot of mixed up coordinates in the later ones, but that one, I was curious about. Would love to see that loaded up and see what the result data looks like with a freshly uploaded report.
We have a new copy to try as well that you can give an install first, https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/Fences5_5.8.2.5-j132-Setup.exe, which again gives more information in the debug logs. Your problem does seem related to the problem that has been fixed for the others on the forums, so please give this "5.8.2.5" aka "5.82 Revision 5" copy a few tries.
Given the complexity of your scenario, we may unfortunately need to a go little beyond just reloading the snapshots to confirm fixed or broken. I'd say give your 2024-07-01 backup a load and see if it loads up correctly. If not, please try to move some of them back into place, then wait about 10-20 seconds to ensure the layout has saved. Take a snapshot before rebooting, then, reboot, and then after coming back from rebooting, take another snapshot. Let's do a few cycles of this and see if the changes stick, and/or if they keep shifting over, etc etc. Am looking for some sort of pattern!
Thank you for the help.
The new revision 5 fixed my issue. I simply installed it, rebooted and restored a known good layout. It restored fine. Rebooted again, and all was still good. Thanks for being responsive to the issue.
Last Friday I submitted FencesIssueReport_v5.8.2.1_2024-08-23_12-28-22.zip to Jeff's Dropbox. Today I found the problem only happens with monitor layouts with one over another.
This causes the problem. Fences on monitor 3 shift down and overlap.
This does not have the problem:
I tried various arrangements and numbers of monitors. Consistently if I put one above another the layout gets corrupted in various ways as soon as I apply the change. I have Dell laptop with 17" 3840 x 2160 display, monitor 1 above. Monitors 2 & 3 are 32" 3840 x 2160 displays. Monitor 4 is a 27", 1920 x 1080.
Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Hi SeaBobWire, yup you got it. We were able to resolve the issue; your observation is correct and thank you! Give the copy https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/Fences5_5.8.2.5-j132-Setup.exe a try and let us know how it goes.
I'm glad Stardock decided to attack Fences 5.81.I certainly wasn't going to jump through the hoops that were presented to me so as I could be a Beta tester. As previously mentioned My PC is a work PC, I don't have time (apologies). I assumed Stardock would have 6 or more monitors laying around that they can plug in to tackle the bugs.
Moving forward, Fences5_5.8.2.5-j132 works for me
6 monitor configuration as follows:
After finally getting 5.80 to work for me (Don't ask I don't know what I did to succeed over the problems I was having) I installed Fences5_5.8.2.5-j132 and on reboot:
*** (1)
When right clicking the desktop for the Context Menu and going to the sub menu "View" (*image one) Configure Fences is where I have always known it to be. As is "Lock Fences"
*Image One
On a second right click on the Desktop for the Context Menu, Configure Fences has moved to the main Context Menu and no longer appears under the sub menu "View" (*Image Two) This repeats on each boot of the PC.
I am not saying this is a bug, perhaps it's by design. It certainly doesn't bother me as it makes no difference to my workflow.
*Image Two
Thanks for the progress with fixing this so far.
Fences5_5.8.2.5 fixed the errant location problem in 5.8.1 when fences are located above one another.
Thanks for the quick work.
All, Fences 5.83 has replaced Fences 5.81 as the current beta. For details, please see:
