Using Fences 5.54, Windows 10 Pro Build 19041.
Fences will no longer allow me to store my desktop icons in a single column. My minimum is two columns which will allow me to store and reposition icons with automatic repositioning. Trying to use single column by dragging the fence outline, results in a clipped picture of the icons with no repositioning.
Suggestions?
Hello,Sorry to hear you are having issues. Need to know more on your system.
Thank you.Basj,Stardock Community Assistant.
I'll provide the info requested for trouble shooting, but FYI when I switched from "Classic Icons" to "Medium Icons" the fences automatically resorted and allowed single column selection.
I'll get back to you on the other info as soon as I can gather it.
The problem is solved. I don't know when it was changed, but I was in "classic icons". Selecting "Medium Icons" caused the problem to go away. If I select classic, it returns.
If you need the rest of the data for trouble shooting, let me know. Otherwise, I'll consider my problem solved.
Just to confirm, you still having this issue if you set to medium Icons, yes? If you update your Fences v5.8, do you still see the same issue?
Thank you,
Basj,Stardock Community Assistant
I guess I wasn't as clear as I should have been. When I select "classic" icons, I can't get a single column fence. If I select "medium" single columns is available, I'm using version 5.54 now, I'll update and report any changes.
I asked since I can not reproduce your issue. Here is what I get on my Windows 10 system version 22H2 (OS Build 19045.4651). But I am on Fences v5.80 and on 100% scale factor in Windows display setting. Not sure what your setup look like since you did not supply us with those much needed information as I mentioned in first reply to you.
Here's the information requested:
Windows full version and OS Build number. Please use Winver.exe.
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit Version 22H2 (OS Build 19045.4780) Fences Version 5.81
Any reason you're not updating to the latest Windows 10 v22H2 (OS Build 19045.4651)?
I have the latest version of Windows 10 available.
Have you tried rebooting the system and see if the issue goes away.
The rebooting has no effect on the issue.
What is the icons size set for your desktop? If you set the icons size to Classic icon, do you see the same issue?
Switching to "classic" causes the problem (2 icons per row minimum). Switching icons to "medium" returns full control to single icon per row in a single or multiple columns.
Do you have multi monitors? If you do, need to know all resolution, scale (100%,125% etc.) and connection type (HDMI, DVI, DP etc.) on for each monitor.
I have four (4) monitors attached via NVIDIA GeForce GT 730 via HDMI set as follows:
GeminosX-B 2560x1440, 60Hz, 100%
VA2250 1920x1080, 60hz, 100%
GeminosX-T 2560x1440, 60Hz, 100%
Let me know if you need anything else.
John
Thank you for the information. Just to push further. What is your icon space setting. You will need to open up regedit and see/edit this space
ref: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/how-to-change-the-spacing-between-desktop-icons-for-windows-8-made-easy-series-d24ef024-d605-4521-7cf4-79bbd560dbaf
My IconSpacing is -972 and IconVerticalSpacing is -1272
Hope this helps.
If you change both of those to standard 1125, does the issue goes away?
I changed my spacing as requested. Nothing changed. When I select Classic icons, all fences want to be two icons wide (they overflow the single width). I return to Medium Icons and they act in a normal manner.
Not sure why you are seeing the issue with Classic icons. What I believe, it might be Fences is conflicting with other application running in your system. But, to troubleshoot this, you will need to do cleanboot. Its up to you if you wish to carry on with it. Here a link for Cleanboot steps: https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#cleanboot.
Do note that Cleanboot need to be done with extra care, follow the steps mentioned properly.
I'll look into the clean boot option sometime in the future. Right now, my current system is functioning just fine, so I'll continue this configuration for the near future.
Thank you for your help and information.
Understandable decision, do reply back here if or once you did the cleanboot steps.
Glad to help.
