I have 3 Fences placed at the bottom of the screen, Docked, they use the Rollup feature.
Every time I boot up the PC, they are no longer docked, but placed randomly around the desktop
The fences lose the size I manually set also.
Its in the pita, to manually keep putting back where i want them and to resize again, every boot up.
this is a basic "bug" that should have been spotted at Q and A testing.
Hello,Sorry to hear you are having issues. But, don't normally see such an issue. If it is, we would have see tonnes of others reporting on this issue, on the first week of released. Need to know more on your system.
Thank you.Basj,Stardock Community Assistant.
that has happened to me too recently, It moved my fences after changing monitor, it was fine until yesterday.
Need more information as mentioned in my previous reply.
Thank you,
Basj,Stardock Community Assistant
Thanks for getting back
I use windows 11, one monitor at 2560 x 1600 res, Fences 5 v5.04
( i thought this was the fences 5 forum, apologies if it isnt)
I have tested some more.
I have only 1 fence at the bottom now, and the other 2 fences are just on the desktop.
and 1 fence docked at the bottom seems to work, and it does remain docked and using the roll-up feature.
MAYBE it was because i had 3 docked and they overlapped ? and fences moved them on boot up ?
This is a Fences forum for all Fences version ie 2,3,4 and 5. That is why I asked. Also when asked we will need Windows full build number. Use Winver.exe. You will get something like below. Need the OS Build.
It is best not to overlap. If you have lots of icons on your desktop, please consider using Fences desktop pages. For example, you can have one page for your games collection, another page for work and another for your media.
Windows 11version 23H2 (OS Build 22631.3447)
I meant i put all the icons in the 3 fences, there was none left on the desktop cept trashcan and 2 others, 99% of icons i placed in fences to clean up the desktop.
The overlapping i referred to, was the fences that were docked at the bottom, but still i resize them so they fit side by at the bottom of the screen.
I only use 1 desktop page and have disabled multiple desktop pages
It was just a suggestion. If you have enough space to have all your icons on one Desktop page that should be okay too. Just to confirm, your initial issue was resolved, yes?
No it is not resolved....
Docked fences with roll-up causes all the fences to move from set positions and resize , randomly.
it is definitely not resolved.
this is the desktop before rebooting - Note the 3 docked Fences at the bottom.
This is after rebooting. I have not moved anything, this is how it appeared after the reboot.
Hello,
Please try Fences 5.5 Beta. It has the new monitor enhancement, which might also help with your issue. Refer: https://forums.stardock.com/527284.
ive tried 5.5, it does not resolve the problem.
I will not continue to use fences anymore and will remove it from my pc.
and Ive now seen older posts on this forum which much the same issue, So i dont take kindly
to your earlier comment, about there would be tons of people complaining about it, because there are
other people with the same issue, you even replied to them.....
Appreciate if you could post the link to that post please.
Really ??theres one post on the same page as my issue ie the First page of this forumI found others I stopped looking after page 3.Fences 4 not keeping their position with RDPhttps://forums.stardock.com/521971/page/1/#3928845 Fences are resized and repositioned randomlyhttps://forums.stardock.com/527137/fences-are-resized-and-repositioned-randomly Fence bigger then monitorhttps://forums.stardock.com/527389/page/1/#3927911 Fences 5 - Missing icons and forgetting fence locationshttps://forums.stardock.com/526414/fences-5---missing-icons-and-forgetting-fence-locations

https://forums.stardock.com/527389 This one is inconclusive, the OP never return if my suggestion work or not.
https://forums.stardock.com/526414 The thread OP did not come back and post if the issue on the thread, wish he would so we would understand if its resolved or not. Still this on also inconclusive.
We, understand your frustration, but we are trying to help. You mention this in your very first post.
Which is not true at all, since if it a basic bug it will have lots more report. You list 4 reports with two resolved and another two inconclusive. Also those report not the same as your issue. Your issue the Fences move right after reboot, every reboot yes?
We still would like to try to figure out why the v5.5 don't work on your side. If you wish so.
If not, you could always use this link and ask for refund.

i said basic bug because this happened immediately within minutes of installing.
i was setting up the fences for the first time and then rebooted.
I have done more testing and have drilled it down to :
the fences move randomly at reboot , when using - Docked fences at the bottom of the screen + roll-up
if i use normal fences, not docked, not roll-up, and just placed normally on the desktop they dont move or resize on reboot.
so thats more info you can use to try re-produce the error
I can reproduce this on my system.
If I move a couple of Fences from their original position and dock them at the bottom of the screen, after a restart they are back in their original position again. Both Fences have rollup turned on and Vanish is turned on.
Windows 11 Pro - 22635.3566; Fences - 5.0.5.4
Great to know, thank you, pelaird, for checking this on your system.
Here is what I get on my Windows 11 VM system. Please review the video and see if there different in settings specially on the Layout management & Backups. And Windows Display property. I am trying to reproduce the issue so I can forward it to Support.
Also, you mentioned, it happen on those Fences you just move to dock at the bottom. Try this, move it and save a layout snapshot and see if that survive a reboot.
Nope. That didn't make any difference. The fences still jumped back to their original position after restart. The only setting that I have different is the Display is set to 125%.
I tested on 125% scale, rebooted, but don't see the issue. All bottom dock still in the same position. Have you tried Fences 5.51 yet?
Those results were with Fences 5.5.1.1.
Hello,Not sure what is going on, However, I have forwarded your problem/question to Stardock Support Team for their assistance. Please keep an eye on this thread for any updates. We appreciate your feedback and patience.
It's possible that rebooting a VM does not cause this issue because the actual PC is not restarting.
Well, my Windows 10 is an actual system and I can't not reproduce it on it. For Windows 11, that is why I forward the issue to Support, hopefully they can reproduce it.
I haven't been able to reproduce this either. Not on the Windows 11 system itself, nor in Sandbox. Something could be fundamentally different about my display (1920 x 1200 is my maximum resolution, for example).
That being said, the closest I've been able to get to this happening on my end is by taking an automatic layout provided by Fences, moving it elsewhere, and then changing these outlined settings:
https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/Fences_2024-04-30_16-05-34amcguinness.png
Interestingly, with "Don't preserve my desktop layout" checked, even in "restarting" with Windows Sandbox, it does produce a very similar looking problem of randomly scattered Fences.
So, my impression is that if anyone experiencing this is confirming they have it set to "Preserve my layout", and still the preserving of the layout is failing-- then we need to know (1) what is unique to your system that could be affecting your display, and (2) what you have changed since the problem started.
If the answers are unknown for whatever reason, please see if you can Windows Sandbox to recreate the problem in this environment. Windows 11 (won't work in 10) will allow you do this, and even record video capture of the problem through a simulated "reboot".

To treat this as a reproducible software issue, we would need such verifiable evidence to log the bug internally for our developers to look into.
