I was using DeskScapes v8 and when Windows updated on the 9th, it stopped working. The animated backgrounds were black.
I installed the latest version (11) yesterday.
A little better...the animations/videos display...but, as a static image.
What can I check/change?
I'm running Windows 11 Insider Preview 26227.5000
Animation still not working. Does display as Static.
Uninstall, reboot, reinstall as it may be files not being replaced correctly.
Did that....no change
Still having issues in Windows 11 Insider Preview 26241.5000 (ge_prerelease)

Works Fine in w 11..
I have the same black screen issue with Deskscapes 8 and am not on the Insiders program. This just started happening after updating to Windows 11, version 24H2.
I've just followed the steps to purge, reboot and reinstall. Still no animation, just the black screen.
Hello,Sorry to hear you are having issues. Have you tried installing latest codec from the link provided by rhoger above?
Thank you,Basj,Stardock Community Assistant.
Yes, I have been using the K-lite code packs for over 15 years, going back to the late 2000s. I have the latest update installed.
Have try changing these setting.
Thank you,
Basj,Stardock Community Assistant
DeskScapes 11 is the current version of DeskScapes.
DeskScapes 8 is not supported on Windows 11 24H2 or in fact any Windows 11 version. DeskScapes 8 was released in 2013, DeskScapes 10 in 2019 and Windows 11 was released in 2021 and DeskScapes 11 officially in 2023 having been in beta since 2021.
Unfortunately the only fix is to update to v11 of DeskScapes (or stay on 23H2 possibly)
basj, that setting was already in place and the situation remains the same.
Neil Banfield, I have been using Deskscapes 8 with Win 11 for years with no issues. But to see for myself, I installed Deskscapes 11 two days ago using the 30-day trial. Deskscapes 11 has the same issue: total black screen.
Just to clarify, you do have "Animate controls and elements inside Windows" turned on in System Properties > Advanced > Performance > Settings.
pelaird, just checked. Yes, it appears that has been selected with the 'Let Windows choose..' option. Here's my screenshot:
Just trying to eliminate possibilities.
There might be something conflicting with Deskscapes, please try Clean boot as mentioned here: https://support.stardock.com/space/SHC/1346928700/DeskScapes+Clean+Boot. Do note to follow the steps carefully. Try it and report back.
