I was using DeskScapes v8 and when Windows updated on the 9th, it stopped working. The animated backgrounds were black.
I installed the latest version (11) yesterday.
A little better...the animations/videos display...but, as a static image.
What can I check/change?
Hello,Sorry to hear you are having issues. Need to know, you on Windows 10 or 11? Also, need it full version number. Use Winver.exe.
ThanksBasj,Stardock Community Assistant.
Windows 11 v24H2 (OS Build 26052.1100)
Look like you on Insider preview build. Do know that Stardock do not support Insider preview build. However, I have forwarded your problem/issue to Stardock Support Team for their review. We appreciate your feedback.
Thank you.

I've been part of the Insider Preview for quite some time. As I previously stated, DeskScapes 8.8.51worked well until the latest Windows update.
The issues don't hinder productivity...but, I do like DeskScapes.
Thanks!
James
i have too
Same problem with me too!!!
Hello,Sorry to hear you are having issues. Which Windows 11 you have on your system? Insider preview?
DeskScapes 8.x has never supported Windows 11.
Obviously we do not officially provide support for insider builds of Windows as they often have bugs, but we will take a quick look to see if it is a simple fix for DeskScapes 11.
Yes, I am running Insider Preview for quite some time now, with no problems on Deskcapes.
Problem come up suddenly!!
For reference the issue happens on Deskscapes 11 too, I am also on windows insider which is why I didn't report it.
Still backgrounds work fine, just not animated.
Back when it was working (before the most recent windows update), it would sometimes stop animating, and I would open deskscapes and it would say something like (Deskscapes requires XYZ feature to work properly, can we enable it?), and when I say yes, it would work again.
Unfortunately it stopped asking that question and I forget what feature it said was required and it was enabling so I can try to do it manually.
Can you please help with that part, keep in mind that the insider feature will eventually rollout to the main releases so even if not officially supported it is good to try to find out what is happening at least.
Thanks
Hello,Sorry to hear you are having issues. As mentioned before Stardock don't support Insider release issue. However, I have forward your problem/question to Stardock Support Team for their review. We appreciate your feedback.
We have an internal build which should address this. I am unsure on when we are releasing it yet.
Thanks for letting us know.
For reference: I'm running DeskScapes 11 on Windows 11 Pro - 22635.3276 and it works as expected without issue.
Use win10 and bye DeskScapes 11, but the 4k movie dont working! I get onely movie on the topp of the monitor! And i have a 4K monitor.
There's a new Beta version of DeskScapes 11 which addresses the animation issue with latest Canary build.
DeskScapes 11.01 Changelog03/11/2024Version updated:UI: 11.01DeskScapesConfig: 11.0.1.0
Platforms: Stardock and Steam
Changes:
JPEG (not just JPG) named files are now an accepted extension for images.
This should also address a problem on the Canary insider builds of Windows 11 where DeskScapes stopped working correctly.
This has a couple of tiny misc fixes and resolves the issue with deleted files still showing in the recent and favorites lists.
For me the updated build didn't fix the animated backgrounds, but it also stopped the static backgrounds from working. Both the background and the taskbar are pitch black. Note I am also using Start 11 V2, and fences, latest beta of all 3. Otherwise start/fences are working fine.
Cheers
Make sure "Animate controls and elements inside windows" is checked in the Advanced System Properties.
I have the performance properties set as shown...no animation.
They were all checked, I did try to change them to match yours without effect.
I also tried to uninstall deskscapes including removing settings/dreams, and then rebooting, then reinstalling 11.01 without effect.
However eventhough I selected to remove all stored settings, I noticed some of them didn't change back.
When I played with the direct show option (I assume the middle choice EVR is the default), i did at one point get 1 or 2 windows called Activemovie that showed the animated background playing.
Also when I use the clearing buttons in Advanced, I can see the background appear for a moment before turning black.
I also tried the option to never pause, no effect.
I also tried turning off the option for deskscapes to takeover fences blurring background, and even turning off fences chameleon feature, no impact
also tried to turnoff taskbar transparency (0%) in start 11 changing it to default. No impact (changed it back).
So when the issue happens both the taskbar and the desktop are pitch black but when i take a screenshot of them to show you, they are all white in the screenshot like so:
When I try to restart explorer, I also see the windows version on the desktop bottom right, before the blackness covers it
I tried with (correct aspect ratio on external monitor) checked/unchecked. The setup is 2K HP laptop set to HD with internal monitor connected to external Asus monitor via HDMI, external res 1920x1080. Display set to show only 2 (the external monitor) as below.
I noticed when i apply the background from deskscapes, the only option is apply to all monitors. apply to specific monitor is greyed out. Not sure if this is causing the problem but this was always the setup and it always worked before that recent windows update.
also in the preview and as a screensaver the animation works so it doesn't seem to be a codec issue.
Sorry for your issue, but it was worth a try. I'm running the Beta channel 22635.3350 and DeskScapes works as expected. MS must have made some changes to how desktop background are displayed that is causing issues with DeskScapes.
not sure if this helps but windows personalization background shows black and the stretch option is set to (Fill)
personalization colors set as below
I saw in Reddit where someone was saying WallpaperEngine was no longer working after the latest Canary channel update. MS did introduce the option to use HDR wallpapers, and maybe that has something to do with this issue.
You might get the issue once the next build goes from dev channel to beta channel.
I'm on dev channel, it is supposed to get earlier builds than beta, but more stable than canary
it was nice of Stardock to try to fix it. Hopefully either the final release will fix a bug or the cause will become more apparent once more poeple have the issue on release.
i updated to the beta version the regular won't work, im on the canary build when I select an animated dream it opens another window that says active window with dream working fine but not my background and when i choose a wallpaper i had to go to the location of wallpaper on my computer to set it. i tried the purge and restart options
If you continue to have issues please uninstall DeskScapes, REBOOT (very important) and then reinstall the beta of DeskScapes.
Testing here shows the issue does not happen on the Canary builds so it is probably just a case of files not being updated correctly.
