Get into the Fences 5 Release Preview Now
Fences 5 is a major update to its popular Windows desktop organization software with over 20 million downloads. Fences solves the problem of a “messy desktop” by automatically organizing Windows desktop icons into shaded areas, creating a clutter-free and productive workspace.
Fences 5 introduces Chameleon™️ – a Windows desktop icon enhancement that blends your desktop icons into your wallpaper. Icons maintain their functionality but fade into the background to remain easily accessible without being a distraction.
Also new in Fences 5, it is now easier than ever to access your Fence groups by bringing them to the top with a single click. Building on the patented Peek™ functionality introduced in Fences 4, Fences 5 enables the ability to access your Fence groups from the taskbar by adding an icon to the taskbar to instantly access your desktop groups.
Fences is used by thousands of businesses, from Education to Government to Healthcare. To help these businesses deploy organized dashboards of desktop icons, Fences 5 for Business adds all-new tooling that makes it easier than ever to manage these deployments. With the new ability to easily import/export layouts for distribution, tooling to load configurations from a network drive during logon, and more, Fences sets the standard for enterprise desktop icon management.
"Fences 5 is designed to deliver a modern desktop experience," said Brad Sams, General Manager of Stardock Software. "Fences is the best way to organize your desktop and with Chameleon and Peek, we have built a modern workflow that provides you instant access to your content while reducing the distractions of the desktop.”
Along with its new features, Fences 5 delivers many other enhancements to the core Fences desktop engine that results in improved performance and enhanced capabilities.
Fences 5 is available today starting at $9.99 with Release Preview discounts available for a limited timeand it is also included in the award-winning Object Desktop suite.
I can swear that the following conversation took place in the Stardock offices, but I can't prove it.-Hey Let's update fences.-Ok, What are we improving this time?-Nothing.-Are we adding a few new features, then-No!-Then why are we updating the version?-'cause for MONEY. Let's take people's money for nothing!-Ok, here is an idea for more money. "subscription system"Anyway, many thanks to the stardock team for this update that does not change anything.I first purchased fences in January 2018. 6 years have passed so far. I used it with pleasure, but I think we have come to the end of the road. I'm not giving a single penny until Microsoft or a better and cheaper developer makes the current feature or the Stardock team adds a "real" feature!
hmm, bummer. I wonder how much SD makes with people choosing to do subscription versus those of us who just want to pop in every few years and buy a license update (to get the latest versions, perpetually again).
For example, I bought the Object Desktop bundle a few years ago, and now want to upgrade them to the latest. I see I can renew my subscription (which was a "classic subscription", where I got to keep the licenses perpetually) but the renewed subscription would appear to be a regular subscription (which you lose access to any software once the term ends).
In my case, since I'm vehemently opposed to subscriptions (where you don't get to keep it once the subscription ends), I must skip updating to latest Object Desktop, and they lose a sale. I want them to have my money to support them to make better things, this software is great, but by matter of principle I cannot support these purchasing models.
This doesn't sound right. If you renew a classic subscription under your downloads ect. it should still be a classic subscription with only 2 changes. 1) 5 download limit and 2) an auto renew which can be turned off immediately.
I can see fully why people are upset with the 30 dollar permanent upgrade / buy fee. I have already expressed interest in that changing somehow myself.
However, anyone with a "classic" OD subscription really is still getting a great deal. If there is only one area that Stardock got right with all these changes it is with this one. The classic OD sub is a must buy imo.
Thanks PhoenixRising1 for pointing this out! I've read through this a few times and it sounds like what you are saying is correct: https://support.stardock.com/space/SHC/1496285185/What+is+an+Object+Desktop+%26+Subscription+Software
I'll give it a shot! Thanks SD in advance if this works
I've been a fan of Fences since v2 and will continue to use v4 for as long as it's supported. However, on the face of it, the move to SaaS for a minor OS utility that originally cost less than $10 for a full license with minor updates between major versions is clearly not in the interest of the customer. That, or SD has a problem with its business model and they've been poorly pricing for years.
The upgrade paths are, IMO, too expensive for the utility of the software and the SaaS model isn't justified for the usefulness of the product.
I realize software development is not free but I'm severely disappointed in this new direction. I have no doubt that it was made for financial reasons (only because I believe there's no viable technical reason to do so) but the consumer is poorer for it.
Sorry, but I will not be upgrading until the cost-benefit improves.
For real, you added "one feature" and you will charge it as a major version ? why ? Is this update hide something else that you don't specify ? upgrade plan you offer are a bit ridiculous and seem a litle bit broken. It should be at least half of the price for an almost identical software with for adition only a "opacity" feature. I could understand if you told me you're entirely rewrote the software with improved performance, a lot more feature, etc.
I remember when I bought my Fence 3 licence, I got 5 PC licence for 10 $... upgrade to fence 4 cost me another 10 $ but the upgrade was usable only on 1 of my PC. Still obliged to keep legacy fence 3 on my extras computers even if originally you gave me 5 PC license. I still have to pay again & again.
I seen you talk about "PERMANANT LICENCE" is it include Fence 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 until I die ?
Did you plan to release new major fences version every year since now ?
Also I seen the software on steam... what are update plan will include steam version ? you will release a new steam product yearly of update it forever ?
I bought permanent upgrades to Fences 3 (£5.49), and Fences 4 (£7.49) - so it's not unusual for me to regularly pay for upgrades when they're available.
Really disappointing to see the permanent upgrade price almost 4 times the price, and I won't be taking out a subscription on principle.
They won't have argument, not answers to my questions since almost 1 month.
Lmao, they nuked Fences 5 Upgrade FAQ and replaced it with locked thread, because they got called out there. They put Feedback thread linked in the nuked FAQ, but that link goes nowhere:
And I just got an email from them about Fences 5:
Shouldn't it say "Starting at 9.99$/month"?
No, the thread had served its purpose and was closed.
Any comment on the fact the feedback link goes nowhere? And why are you editing forums posts?
You don't like links to Archive? Sure, but deleting whole sentences?
I highly doubt you are capable.I left the determination of what to do with the antagonistic and insulting comments to Sean as it's his thread. My response would have been to delete the comment AND its creator. You as a customer have the right to seek assistance from Stardock's Support team. You have not purchased the right to insult them.Parroting [quoting] your insults is not 'support'. It shows naive indifference with an inability to formulate their own opinions. If you do not like Stardock's pricing vote with your feet and leave.No-one is stopping you. That is the meaning of commercial free enterprise.
I rarely forget names. If they regularly show as a blip on an Admin's radar there can be repercussions.
It's time you leave this 'crusade' and seek another elsewhere.
You dodged a valid question.
There is no crusade from me. I was just raising a concern about the removal of feedback that was given by your userbase. There were more than few people who were even more loyal to Stardock than me and felt bad about these changes you are making.
This is a forum, right? People can raise their concerns, give you feedback (even if it's negative one) and having a two-sided discussion, or am I wrong?
It was a criticism. I wasn't using explicit language, nor was going around insulting people. But it seems nowadays anything like this is easily labeled as antagonistic and insulting.
I wouldn't even spend my time on this topic again, if you wouldn't delete the FAQ thread, point people to dead link, edit my posts and then partially quote something from me that cannot be found in it's full context (as you deleted it).
I just want to clarify that I do NOT want to start a fight here.
I am just defending my name, my and many others' view on this.
100% agree the upgrade pricing is insane and I REFUSE to do a sub.
Here's the thing...if you don't need the new features, if it doesn't fulfill a need, don't purchase it as your "old" software will continue to function as is.
Thats not the point.
Actually, it is unless the point was to whine.
Fences 3 slowed down my desktop. Fences 4 is same problem. I suspect Fences 5 is just another attempt in selling the same product over and over.
As soon as you have alot of fences on your dekstop (i have 10) containing aprox 50 shortcuts, all drag and drop or right click menues gets extremely much slower. And i have a high end PC.
Hello,Sorry to hear you are having issues. Wish you can create your own thread so we can try to help you from there.
ThanksBasj,Stardock Community Assistant.
I asked some question in this post about licensing that seem really blurry for me. Yes it contain some disappointments and incomprehension. But you should help me to really understand things about your licences, your plans, the future of fences over the years and new feature of fences 5. Is fences 5 is only a DLC that bring Chameleon mode or it add others features (including performances improvement, etc). I don't freely bash your product. I just want to understand all things about your many licensingss optionss and for what I should pay for fences 5 ! If you want I buy it, please sell me your product a little bit please.
No the point is to tell a company what we are and are not willing to pay for a product and what we expect as far as support. I don't blindly support any company. But I go out of may way to support a company that makes good products and give them a reasonable price. Here the reasonable price aspect is not what the community expects so we are letting them know.
SEVENTY DOLLARS FOR A PERMANENT 5 PC LICENSE? You greedy, disgusting company. I supported you for years, and now you do this? I will not support you - even if you go back on this. You've lost my trust, and you can have that permanently, on all your devices, for free. Shameful, disgusting, greedy practice. I hope you feel ashamed of yourself.
Hi,
A Discord user (Knox[knox5508]) is having problems with its Fences 5 licensing. He comments he can't create an account to post to these forums nor have the option to contact the e-mail he have when he acquired their Object desktop subscription.
This is the message he posted on discord:
Maybe someone here could help him.
J.
Maybe someone here could help him. J.
Kind of you to try to help. Perhaps he can supply his nickname? He had to have one to have an Object Desktop subscription...and when I search knox5508 I come up blank.
I don't understand why he can't log into Forums to post his problem. As it stands, I can't help knox5508.
I need to amplify the messaging here.
I just had to double-check... I've been an Object Desktop subscriber (sometimes reluctantly) since 2014.
In case the Stardock folks are bad at math, that's TEN years.
With the addition of Steam purchases like GC and Sins, I've given you folks well over $500. Most of this spend was simply for the ease of installation and bundling of sparkly utilities that I can find elsewhere (or develop myself, for that matter).
You mean to tell me you can't honor the Object Desktop subscription model by including a MINOR update to ONE of your bundled offerings as part of the subscription I've been paying for a decade? You want another ten bucks for that?
You guys have lost your minds.
And a customer.
I'll use the remainder of my subscription time to migrate to alternatives.
