Stardock Announces Fences 5
Now in Release Preview with Chameleon, Peek Toggle, and New Enterprise Functionality
Get into the Fences 5 Release Preview Now
Fences 5 is a major update to its popular Windows desktop organization software with over 20 million downloads. Fences solves the problem of a “messy desktop” by automatically organizing Windows desktop icons into shaded areas, creating a clutter-free and productive workspace.
Fences 5 introduces Chameleon™️ – a Windows desktop icon enhancement that blends your desktop icons into your wallpaper. Icons maintain their functionality but fade into the background to remain easily accessible without being a distraction.
Also new in Fences 5, it is now easier than ever to access your Fence groups by bringing them to the top with a single click. Building on the patented Peek™ functionality introduced in Fences 4, Fences 5 enables the ability to access your Fence groups from the taskbar by adding an icon to the taskbar to instantly access your desktop groups.
Fences is used by thousands of businesses, from Education to Government to Healthcare. To help these businesses deploy organized dashboards of desktop icons, Fences 5 for Business adds all-new tooling that makes it easier than ever to manage these deployments. With the new ability to easily import/export layouts for distribution, tooling to load configurations from a network drive during logon, and more, Fences sets the standard for enterprise desktop icon management.
"Fences 5 is designed to deliver a modern desktop experience," said Brad Sams, General Manager of Stardock Software. "Fences is the best way to organize your desktop and with Chameleon and Peek, we have built a modern workflow that provides you instant access to your content while reducing the distractions of the desktop.”
Along with its new features, Fences 5 delivers many other enhancements to the core Fences desktop engine that results in improved performance and enhanced capabilities.
Fences 5 is available today starting at $9.99 with Release Preview discounts available for a limited timeand it is also included in the award-winning Object Desktop suite.
That's an assessment that every user gets to make. For instance, Microsoft Office 2021 is essentially the same as my 2013 version (for my purposes). Microsoft offers no upgrade path - it's full price every time, and not worth it to me. On the other hand new versions of Stardock apps are not just about features, they're about maintaining compatibility with the ever changing OS.
You can find the wallpaper here
I am glad we agree that buying a permanent license does not make a lot of sense in its current model. However, it seems we are in disagreement about whether that option should be fixed. Fences 5 still has not moved out of the release preview, so maybe there is still hope it will be fixed.
That's iff (if and only if) the OS turnover time (life cycle) is rapid with frequent OS feature/coding change (like W11).
If you ask me, subscription with different tiers of/combination of apps and features with length of membership (length of subscription/loyalty) price reduction is far more attractive/logical in that case.
if, on the other hand, OS life cycle is long with little coding/feature changes, "lifetime" is perhaps more advantageous (financially).
MS appears to be going the former rather than the latter route.
In my experience when Microsoft releases operating systems in quick succession and 3 years apart they are all actually the same operating system. Windows 95 / 98 / 2000 were all the same but with enhancements. Windows vista / 7 / 8 again all the same. 7 was an enhanced version of Vista, and 8 was basically identical to 7 but had some weird extra software added for a new start menu (Thank you Stradock Start 8 was a miracle). If history tells us anything we will have 6 - 9 years of Microsoft playing around with Windows 11 parts before they actually make a new operating system for real. If this is the case every stardock app may carry over to Windows 12 quite easily. Unfortunately, Microsoft has to be soo tight lipped on everything
No, it was a hypothetical, however, the time appears to be shrinking: 10 to 11 compared to 11 to 12 if it launches in 2024...never a certainty with MS.
Actually, the choice isn't a "should" that choice is something you want but, it's how and at what price Stardock chooses to sell it which will determine what happens. It's nice that Stardock notes your thoughts, but, does Adobe and many other companies give one a choice?
As for "with reasonable prices for both models." Everyone has his own opinion regarding what's "reasonable". That's why I mentioned a "tiered" approach which would offer features and programs sort of like Adobe does at differing prices. A sort of WYWIWYG, if you will. However, I do not speak for Stardock, and my opinions are only that, mine and not SD's.
I'd say one evolves from another keeping/losing parts and features as they choose. W11 now is rather different than at its start. Maybe the AI Start button will be the big change when W11 goes to 12. Who knows? And again, if the changes come quickly in 12 as they did in 11, subscription makes more sense. If the "evolution" is slow, "lifetime" might be the way to go. The dev channel folks would clearly profit more from the subscription model, and the dev channel isn't going to vanish.
All hypotheticals/hypotheses...and again, that's without the hardware considerations. As our friend naroon1 says, there'll always be those in the wainscotting creating programs to "help" and cause headaches simultaneously.
I really like what Victechnical wrote:
I'd only add, "while making productivity look good, as well."
I get where you are coming from and I will even say you are correct. Although, the subscription method is not for me I will admit that it deserves its place.
I think there is actually really good insight right here. The subscription method could be really good. But anyone that see's the asking price for a permanent license may end up scared off / turned off to Fences 5 in general. I agree.
Thanks. I understand why subs are less attractive to some...but a lot of that is the optics ofv""I'm paying many times for the same thing", which isn't true if changes, additions are made. After all, people should be paid for the work they do...compensation for value received.
I differ with respect to "lifetime" because the price is a function of "once and done".
I suppose this is the spot in our conversation where we agree to disagree and that is ok.
I will be watching out to see if anything changes once Fences 5 leaves the release preview and enters its actual release. I do hope the release goes well.
It has been nice chatting with you.

I’ve been a Fences user since the beginning and I’ve upgraded each time. Now for Fences 5 it’s a subscription? And for a lifetime it’s $40?
the only noticeable difference I see is the “chameleon” — and you jacked up the price that much?
Not even a loyalty discount?
Wow, this must be the end of the road with Fences for me. Here’s hoping Miscrosoft will that that feature.
I don’t see $8.99 anywhere — where exactly do you see that?
You must be kidding. I am eligible for an upgrade. Price with no eligibility: 155,99, price for an upgrade: 197,58 (in brazilian currency).
You seem to have two products in your cart which is why thats more. Click on the top left and see whats there in error.
It automatically 2 products in my cart. Well, now the upgrade is exactly the same price as no-upgrade... Doesnt help
I'm trying to purchase a permanent license for Fences 5, 5-pack. The price is $53.11 USD inc. tax. It's a little steep compared to what I paid for v2.0 a long time ago, but whatever . . . I can see the item in my shopping cart but no matter what I do it won't let me check out. I tried by credit card (VISA), but that didn't work & there are no messages of any declined charges by my card provider. I also tried the Amazon Pay option resulting in the same message:
It says to contact you for assistance, but I can't seem to find a number that lets me speak to an actual person. The phone number I've been using is: (734) 927-0677, but there is no Sales option, except for corporate sales (which I also tried). I'm not keen on leaving a message. Is there a sales/support number I can call to talk to an actual person to help me through this?
FYI, a couple weeks ago I successfully purchased Start11 with no problems using the same VISA. What gives?

Yes but1. I don't see any real innovations in version 5, not even in version 4. These are mostly bug fixes and should basically be free.2. Is the software NOT WORTH considering it as a subscription version?Today everyone who can program believes that they can make big money doing it.And I paid just under 10 euros for the permanent version of Fenses 3.I now consider it dubious to pay annually for a new version that essentially only contains bug fixes. And for the permanent version... don't be mad at me, but the version 5 setup is just 13471 KB in size.Calculate what I would pay for it if it was used for 5 years...That's not a healthy relationship. Especially not when you can get something similar for free?So far I haven't been able to find a proper comparison between version 3 and version 5 anywhere, other than notes that ultimately only show small extensions or bug fixes!11.99 per year with three years of use makes just under 36 eurosA Permnet version should cost €33.99An upgrade to version 4 or 5 makes absolutely no sense unless you value the version numberbut Fences 5 does NOT have any real added value.
---------------------------
Good morning,
I have already purchased 2 Fences licenses (Fences 2 and Fences 3).
Today I might want to update to version 5 but I would like a permanent update and not for a year.
Is this possible and at what cost?
