I was really hoping for an option to not have the camera focus be switched to any passing ship that happened to fly in front of what you are viewing. Many times during a battle my viewpoint is suddenly following a tradeship or other spacecraft into another planets orbit or something else. While I see the advantages of having this happen sometimes I would like the ability to disable this feature. It was one of the few dislikes I had for sins1.I tried looking for similar topics but was not sure what keywords to use so pardon me if I am repeating another request.
I share this frustration and it is happening often.
It shouldn't change focus unless you are zooming. If it is, that is a bug.
You are correct @Blair, It does steal focus when zoomed. But I hate it.
How would you prefer the camera zoom to detect if the target "under the cursor" is something that should be focused on or not?
I would prefer the option of moving the viewing area of the map to not change unless I scroll with WADS, arrow keys, etc. Basically keep looking at where I was unless I choose to move it.
If I "clicked" on a unit I can see where it would be okay to follow that unit around. But for the most part I prefer to move my viewing angle and area on my own.
edit: hope that made sense--now that I am typing it I guess it sounds harder to describe than I thought.
It is difficult I agree that's why I'm trying to flush out the exact details so we can consider implementing it for you and others who have the same concern.
Currently you can 'disconnect' from the camera focus target by using WASD. The camera will move left/right/up/down and no longer follow the unit it may have been attached to.
1. Is it correct that you would want the camera to not change left/right/up/down when you zoom? (i.e. its always looking at the exact same position just from different distances?
2. Clicking to attach the camera to a unit won't work because clicking a unit 'selects' a unit and having the camera change when you are selecting units to give them orders would be disorienting when you are dealing with a lot of stuff in quick succession or issuing orders from other sides of galaxy. Double clicking currently attaches your camera focus to a unit. Is that acceptable?
3. There are some scenarios where "keep looking at where I was unless I choose to move it" may not be desired. Consider this example: you are looking at some empty space around a planet. The planet is moving (it orbits the star). Should the camera continue looking at that empty space or should we break your rule (don't change my view without my permission) and have the camera move with the planet in order to keep looking at that empty space relative to the planet? If not, imagine, trying to place structures while the planet keep shifting out of view of the camera (they move incredibly fast).
I have more to dive into but I will wait to get some clarification / detail on those 3 points first.
Sorry for the late reply. Here goes:
1. I believe the camera already behaves in this way unless a ship flies where I am looking then it starts following that ship to wherever it was headed.
2. Yes, I did not know about the double clicking to attach focus. That sounds great.
3. I had not considered what you described here with the planets moving. that makes sense. Not sure how you could track "relative location" as it moves around the system but I can see the difficulty in achieving that.
The only part I really have issue with is when the camera starts following some random ship along its flight path simply because I was looking at the spot it was flying past. If I could turn that ability off I would be ecstatic!
Ok, I think I understand now. If you open C:\Users\Blair\AppData\Local\sins2\settings\settings.json you can switch
"camera.is_zoom_to_cursor_enabled": true
to
"camera.is_zoom_to_cursor_enabled": false
I think it will be closer to what you are looking for. Let me know how it feels or if there is anything we could change to make it better.
You are my hero @Blair Fraser!
Quick update: For anyone else who chose this method. If you find yourself having trouble zooming in on planets after making this change, you will have to double click on the planet, then zoom in.
Okay, I have made the change. Much to my chagrin, it did stop the problem of following random ships. However, it does not zoom in to the center of the camera viewpoint.Secondly, I do miss the ability to zoom in where I am looking. I just don't want it to follow some random unit flying underneath my mouse.
I really appreciate your help but it did not work. You are still my hero for helping. Thank you so much. I appreciate you.
