I see the text saying "refund item for xxxx" but I have no idea how to refund! It's as clear as mud how to refund your ship items. I've tried left clicking, right clicking, ctrl left click, ctrl right click, shift left click, shift right click, alt left and right click, nothing works. How do you sell ship/planet upgrades to swap them out?
EDIT: I think I figured it out; you have to drag the item out away from the slot to remove it. Leaving this here in case somebody else runs into the same issue.

I think a good chunk of the issue is that nothing else in the game is drag-and-drop, so people don't think to try it. Right click removal seems the most predictable, and it was the first thing I personally tried doing to refund the items, since that's way you abort research or build orders.
Right click isn't an option because that controls autocast behavior (ship and planet items can have autocastable actives like abilities). Right clicking to remove items being built/researched is valid because they can't autocast while being built/researched. Unikraken has a proposal we are looking into.
Follow up: Jamie added Unikraken's idea and the tooltip nows tells you how to remove it.
