I would like to know when moderation for the GC4 Workshop will be up and running?
It didn't take long for one user to start taking others users ship design contributions and start pirating and re-upload them back to the GC4 Workshop under his own name without consent or permission of the original authors.
This has been going on for 7 years on the Steam workshop and thankfully with good moderators violations became fewer and fewer. I was really hoping it would not happen here on the GC4 Workshop.
I would also like to know what the rules for the GC4 Workshop will be and what the policy for violating workshop rules will be?
Any information in regard to GC4 workshop moderation is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
In the online skinning world that very much was the case, mostly years ago now. It was a constant battle to keep on top of it all when many said "if it's online it's free to use" and "what ya gonna do...arrest us over some crappy graphics on the Net?".Times have changed....the Skinning world has grown up a bit...it's about 25 years old now, as are gaming mods [probably 30+]. I remember messing with graphics in Dos games .... natural progression from messing with OS graphics and interfaces. Some miscreants won't accept being 'managed', but most can be re-educated to at least toe the line.Being a 'Moderator' isn't easy, and it's mostly thankless.I do like that Frogboy's Avatar says 'Moderator' ....but then he's braver than I am...
Excellent points Jafo. It my hope we can at least steer some people in the right direction to respect other workshop users and not steal and pirate thier original work.
For those who don't care about rules and respect we can simply show them the door if they continue in bad faith to violate the rules and guidelines.
Most users are respectful and will abide by the rules and guidelines but there is always that one in every 50-100 user's that isn't and that's the one user workshop doesn't need.
Another point I would like to bring up are the possible banned users who stole and pirate other's original ship designs and civ/factions and upload them to modding websites like Nexus and ModsDB to circumvent thier bans by asking other users to download and email them other users ship design and faction files. Those that try this are in for a rude awakening because mods websites rules and TOS are based on DMCA and US copyright laws and infringement and it's strictly enforced upon being reported. Infriging user can be sued in court for piracy and fraud if I'm not mistaken. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I so agree being a moderator is indeed a very thankless Job. At the same time Volunteer Moderators are not God so we never ever let the authority we have go to our heads and act like tyrants who have to have the last word.
I just want the piracy to stop. I get excited to see the new ships and styles because I suck at making my own and appreciate ya'll designers that put out A+ work.
I think we all agree we all want the piracy to stop. I and several others put up with it for several years on Steam. I hate it as much as you do.
Stardocks Forums Moderators on Steam did the best they could. I have no complaints about how they moderated the GC3 Workshop on Steam with the restrictions they had to deal with.
I am sure we will do better with Stardock and not having our hands tied with the restrictions workshop moderation on Steam had.
It's going to take some time and effort. Would you be interested in volunteering to be a GC4 Workshop moderator, Ed?
"Good news everyone!" We are working hard on moderation tools and expect to have our first pass at them by the end of this week. A more robust system is being built out for a future patch. We'll get this hammered out -- thanks for the patience, and for the continued feedback!

Good news indeed! 👍😁
Please keep us posted. I'm looking forward to hearing how the moderation tools work.
Let us know when training volunteer moderators will begin?
Way to go Ron! 👏👏👏👏
Wait...training? I thought we just threw you into the pit and let you fight it out?! Well, ok. You'll get training. We've got a document with pictures that walks you through how the process works, some guidelines for moderator behavior (or behaviour, if you wanna get all European about it), and a few other tools to help with the process.
Thanks again!

I don't think I can be a gladiator because going medieval would be seriously frowned upon. 🗡️
😂🤣😆😁👍
Looking forward to learning.
Thank you Ron.
Or 'correct' about it.... ....
Any idea when they are going to select the volunteers for Discord.
Very interesting. Good to know
With the moderators soon to be in place and hopefully bringing some feeling of security for all who work hard on their ship, faction and Civ designs with out the worry of somebody stealing it and posting as their own we will be able to move forward and get some really good designs out there for all to use and enjoy......
I'm looking very forward to seeing the final draft of workshop TOS and Moderation guidelines. I'm also looking very forward to working with everyone and helping get the piracy under control.
Please schedule a meeting of Moderators so we can discuss the moderation guidelines and code of conduct?
Basilisk83 reported a possible violation in Dev-ama at discord.
Moderation tools are not ready yet as far as I know. Soon I hope.
Just an alert if Derek failed to mention it or you missed it.
Received no alerts yet from Derek. Have to wait until we get the mod tools. I'm going to look at the violation.
Just took a look and I think the duplicate Tyvom race should be removed. It's just creates garbage in the workshop with altered duplicates of the same civ races. Also civs with no description and not giving information to players what's civ is about should also be removed and the author asked to add what the civ is about in the description before uploading it again. If they cannot do this it shouldn't be allowed to be uploaded to workshop in my opinion.
This is the kind of garbage currently being uploaded to Steam GC3 Workshop Most Recent section that I and several others complained about many times over the years. It just adds unnecessary garbage to the workshop players are forced to wade and sift through to find quality content. It's not fair to any player having to sift through incomplete Civs and duplicates of civs already in the game.
Nor should they be allowed to alter and duplicate the recent civs Derek uploaded of the Snathi and Star Control Origins races. Again duplicated copies are just adding more incessantly unnecessary garbage to the workshop. The GC4 Workshop doesn't need to become the garbage dump that Steam GC3 Workshop most recent section became.
Just My 2 cents worth.
Just getting the last bit of paperwork done, but the tools will be live today.
MrStarTrek - Wondered about that duplicate Tyvom post when I saw it. I agree with you. If someone wants to remod a mod & just change some setting to their personal preferences, then it shouldn't get listed.
Oh & congrats on the "Moderator" tag. Good luck on your quest for truth & justice.
I hope there will be TOS and a Workshop Agreement form for users must to agree to to use the GC4 Workshop. Then we can go from there to stop the abuse and piracy with guidelines and rules to that regard. Moderation will also be under rules, guidelines and a code of conduct so moderation is both courteous and professional.
Thank you for the compliment. I will try to be a good moderator.
I am pleased to announce that all copy violations of pirated ship designs stolen from the original authors uploaded on GC4 Workshop have been removed.
🎉🥳🎊😃
All violations received a polite message not to upload designs originally made by other players to GC4 Workshop and to seek out and asked the original author for their permission and consent first.
Basic tools are working and working well. If anyone sees a ship design copy violation please contact a workshop moderator. I can be reached through Steam, Discord and here on the forums. Please DM me or send me a message and I will get back to you ASAP. If I'm not available please contact Yarlen or Rhonin the Wizard.
We are on track. Thanks to everyone who participated and gave their input. Again you all ROCK!
Yes, whatever capacity you need.
Ed, Get a hold of Ron Burke. You have my recommendation for volunteer moderator.
Just shot you a note. Let's talk.
Ron everything is looking great. Much better that I expected and far exceed my expectations.
