As a long term player of GC1, 2 & 3, I've wanted to like this game and I've refrained from complaining throughout the beta releases as that's just what they are - beta and buggy and the devs are well aware of the various bugs that need fixing.
Alas, it's now released at ver 1.01 and it runs like a absolute dog on my machine - it's so slow, with so much lag between mouse moves and clicks that it's unplayable. If I reboot my machine, it'll run OK for perhaps 20 turns but then gets so bogged down and frustrating that I've no interest in playing further.
I have a Core(TM) i9-8950HK CPU @ 2.90GHz with 32Gb RAM and NVIDIA GTX 1070 (not exactly top of the line anymore, but it's no sloth either).
When the game's running, the CPU useage on the GC4 thread peaks at around 10 - 15% whilst GPU usage maxes at 80-100% continually (regardless of whether the game is in the foreground or not). Memory useage seems to max out at around 4 to 6Gb (so it's not swapping). (Task Manager Screenshot)
I've tried "small" galaxy settings, reducing the resolution from 4K to HD - nothing changes changes the poor performance behaviour.
I really hope you can fix this as I really want to see GC4 build on the success of its predecessors.
here I have no problem running the game: i7 - 9750H, gtx 1660 Ti, 16 RAm
mine gets pretty laggy the more i play too. worse system though, only 8g ram (i'm actually waiting to play more till i get another 8g i ordered). but similar problem with the more turns, the slower it gets. gpu 3d section is always maxed out at 100%, constantly using between 1.7g and 2g video card 3d memory, when the minimum and recommended for a video card is 1g. was gunna wait till my new ram came in (hopefully tomorrow) to try it out and write something up on the effects pre and post. kinda disheartening to see that you're having the same problem with 32g though...
one thing i have heard that might work with better systems, is reducing your refresh rate down to about 60fps. other ppl have mentioned this makes their game run better while having their comp fans make less noise too.
The GPU requirements for GC4 are higher than GC3 due to new shaders. CPU usage is roughly the same though but will scale depending on what size game you setup.
In other words it's using your GPU by design. Swapping is only required if a game goes beyond the limitations of your RAM and it shouldn't by design depending on the scale of game you serlected.
There are improvements that can and are being made but what you're citing here isn't due to bad performance.
I just upgraded and it runs great. Prior to my upgrade I was running a i7-4790k with a GTX 970 and it ran just fine. Although this was also DX11 - I'm guessing you're running DX12 so perhaps this makes the interaction with the video card different and possibly more resource hungry?
I had a couple of hard-crashes that I'm pretty sure were video-driver related. But they were few and far between and the resource load was pretty light. I was also basically running on whatever all the default video settings were (I didn't go through and turn them all down or anything) and was playing on medium maps.
Hope this datapoint helps you pinpoint whatever the issue is..

edit: I was definitely not ever running in 4k... just 1080p
Sorry Schism, but it *is poor performance* if the UI gets to be so unresponsive to be unusable. I get that it's a much more graphically intensive game, but why does the GPU continually top out at 80-100% (and I mean for tens of minutes at a time before I get bored of looking) when there's no updates to the display? I'm not zooming, scrolling or changing screens. There's no enemy fleet action. There are a few background galaxy effects but they shouldn't be crippling the UI responsiveness. The GPU should be stressed only when it's actually doing something - if it's being heavily used for nearly static displays there's something wrong. GPU shaders or not, something is not right here.
I don't want to be critical - I know you devs have taken some very undeserved flak recently and I want to see the game evolve to be the next great thing in this lineage, I really hope you can fix it.
It's quite possible that AI strategy threads are being offloaded onto the GPU and it's actually those that are chewing up all those clockcycles for some reason. Obviously someone who knows a lot more about this would have to chime in on this though..
Dogs run awfully fast.
I also have no problems running it on a laptop using a 9750 w 32RAM and another using a 3610 w16RAM. both are useing reviOS
Did you activate Low-Res tectures? I play at full hd and this is my first action when the game starts lagging.
Make sure to restart the game. Not all settings need a restart, but this one does.
Hmm...that's interesting. My system isn't much different than yours and I have no problems running the game at larger settings. I have a Core i7-7700K, though mine runs at 4.2 GHz. My card is a NVidia GTX1080 and I only have 16GB of memory.
Have you stress tested your GPU recently? It could be failing. Not anything anyone wants to hear, but it's a sad reality of computers. Most testing software is free so you might want to look into that and see if there's a physical issue affecting your gaming experience. And before you say other games run fine, also remember that each bit of software out there will run somewhat differently than another. So maybe GC3 runs smooth as silk on your GPU, but isn't hitting the part that's acting up when running GC4.
One thing to check: Turn down anti-aliasing. I've seen people run at 8X anti-aliasing at high resolutions and no one is a winner then.
Thx.
The game defaulted to that setting so I thought it was the optimal choice, as my 2080ti is definitely not happy with something in the game.
That was it for me too. I've been playing with the default 8x with my GPU being driven at 100%. I turned it down to 4x, and now my GPU is under 50%. Much better.
Yep - it's running with low res textures
I've turned off all anti-aliasing, all the optional graphics choices, and am using low res textures.
This really isn't my thing, but have you tested your graphics card to see if it's simply failing?
That means you have a laptop. Need to check the temps because if it is overheating it will reduce perf.
