Is there a PBE option for GalCiv4?
Basically PBE is Play by Email.... it is a old concept and maybe there is a better system now. On Steam for example you can get notifications to join the game on your turn through the friends list.
Anyway the way it works is that people all take their turns on their own time, without needing to be online at the same time in a classic "real-time" way. So for example I could get a notification that it is my turn, but not take my turn until after work...
So the more advanced PBM systems allow for asynchronous play. As in as long as the players are not interacting with each other you can just play as normal. It is only when the player turn order matters once the civilisations meet that you need to wait for the other player. This usually is done by everyone syncing turns once a round... so player 1 can end turn, then player 3, then 2 and they all wait for player 1 before a new round starts. Then latter on when civilisations meet they need to do a single turn and wait for the opposing player in turn order. I might have left out condition cases here but I think you get the idea.
The other less complex method is to just have each player take a turn and pass it to the next player, then they take a turn.. kind of like a hotseat, but the seats can be on the other side of the earth.
TL;DR : Dose GalCiv4 have any kind of Play By Email multiplayer?
No, there is no PBEM in GalCiv IV at this time. First we will have to see how popular multiplayer even is.
Probably more popular with that feature would be my bet : )
Yeah I remember playing Armada a massive amount when it was out using that method and there has been a resurgence of PBM style gaming recently. With lots of new games using it. Thought GalCiv4 might have it...
Well, that sucks. Here is hoping it may get added.
Asynchronous multiplayer is basically the only way I play multiplayer games these days (besides the occasional couch session), so it would be a big selling point for me if it was developed and included.
I would also think that would be true.
Will there be hosted gaming rooms, with perhaps posted gathering times for longer adhoc games? Blizzard had a great working model for ~20-60 minute games at one time. A dueling room might generate interest and spawn groups that get together for longer games.
I would love HOT seat I made a race for my kids to play and we can't even play the game together from same computer I would love to play with my kids with out having to buy a new computer.
Hello! Currently there isnt any such feature. With the current focus being on overall experience improvement rather than multiplayer due to general popularity,. However, it's helpful to note threads like these where people make their wants of such a feature known.
PBC would be great. nowadays i play many games this way and im very sad that we dont have it here in galciv.Would be amazing to start session with friends and make some nice story playing for few months
This is interesting, i remember playing Barren Realms Elite with 24 hour turns on my BBS's back in the day and at midnight everyone would try to login to my bbs at once to smash the enemy before the other guys got in to use their strategy. good times. So the idea of limited "actions" is kinda cool, to suit the game setup and time to play available.
My son lives in Ohio while I live in Colombia and we are both quite busy. It would be a blast if we could play against each other via Email. Completely removes any advantage a fast network has over a player on a slow network. While networks in US are in the gigabytes, we just moved up to a 500 Mbps backbone here.
