Do you have Fences lock? If you did please unlock it and try again. Report back.
Thank you,
Basj,Stardock Community Assistant
I tried different things like unlocking the fences, disabling roll-up, repositioning the fence to another empty space on the desktop.
Nothing seems to help.
I can't even create a new fence, no empty one and no fence of existing shortcuts.
I have the same issue after upgrading Fences from version 3.13 to 4.0.0.3 (on Windows 11), as you can see in the screen capture below:
1. Fences is NOT locked (option "Blocca Fences" is Italian localization for "Lock Fences" and it's not selected)
2. I can see and interact (move, resize, rename) with Fences created with the previous version (some of them are filled with items, not the one I display in the screen capture)
3. I CANNOT create a new fence, it just disappears as I confirm "Create Fence here"
4. I CANNOT drag items (neither shortcuts nor files) inside an existing Fence, they are placed behind the Fence
Given all of the above, Fences has become pretty useless on my desktop since the upgrade to version 4.0.0.3 (two months ago)...
If it still fail after you have unlock it, try to see if you have any other program that is controlling your desktop. There is one case where 360 Total Security introduce their own Desktop Organizer that hinder Fences from some of its functions. Once that option disabled, Fences work without issue on that desktop. Refer : https://forums.stardock.com/494957
Thanks for the hint, but no other program is controlling my desktop. Moreover, I had no issues with Fences version 3.13, the only change was the upgrade to version 4.0.0.3, then the issue started occurring. But I've installed no additional programs. The graphics driver (Nvidia GeForce Driver Studio) is also the same and no overlay is enabled.
If you have not try it, Please try purge and reinstall steps as mention here : [Link]. Just make sure to redownload the latest version from your account page. Reboot after the purge. Reinstall and reboot again after the installation. Retest and report back here.
Thank you,Basj,Stardock Community Assistant.
I did a complete uninstall of Fences while keeping the settings.
Did a reboot of the PC and then reinstalled Fences.
For the moment everything seems to work fine.
I can add shortcuts to fences again, and create Fences.
Thanks!
Same: uninstall keeping settings, reboot, reinstall, reactivate. No need to purge. Now version 4.0.0.3 works as expected.
Maybe the upgrade process from version 3.x to version 4.0.0.3 should be improved to avoid this issue, as other users have posted about it.
A 'Associate Technical Support Analyst' told me that I needed (for what good reason?) to reproduce here that which I had told him. So I do so, as follows.
My system: Windows 10 Pro - 21H2 (2009: 19044); Fences 4.0.0.3.
As someone else wrote in an extant thread on this forum: ‘when I drag and drop a file from the browser and then rename it, fences also renames the files I had selected before the drag and drop action. It should only be the dropped file/s that gets renamed.’ I found it hard to reproduce that problem, but I managed it, or at least I reproduced a version of that problem; see, in the video I am about to link, at approximately 01:10 (and note that my desktop does not contain - not that I can see and not by my design) a directory called ‘test2’. Link to video.
I have been a Fences user since the beginning. After upgrading to V4 it conflicts with Outlook and all of Office 365. It will periodically start an endless loop warning me that it had to disable itself due to a conflict. The only way out of the loop is to reboot the computer. V4 has a whole host of other problems as well, but this is endless loop is making it unusable. I had subscribed to Object Desktop which apparently includes version 3. I let Object expire because I didn't find any features other than Fences to be useful. To stop V4 from going into an endless look I reinstalled V2, but it doesn't have the roll-up feature and that is vital for me. I have reported this issue previously, but nothing has been done. If this can't be fixed, at least let me have V3 so I can get the roll-up feature back.
@pw81449: You could search your disk for Fences*3 *.exe (without the space after the 3, because this website makes something funcky from 3 followed by an asterisk).
If you had any updates of version 3 you should find some files that fit the expression.
Those are the installation files of Fences 3.
It is best to first uninstall version 4 before reinstalling version 3.
You pick the most recent exe file and run it to install version 3 again.
Normally you should be able to use the software key you got for objectdesktop with version 3 of Fences.
Good luck.
Yes
I'm using Fences 4.0.0.3 in Windows 10 Pro (x64), build 19044.1645. I think I'm experiencing a bug, since this doesn't seem to be something that people found an obvious solution to when I posted it as a separate topic in the forum.
In short, I can't move any icons! I can move and resize fences by unlocking them, but I can't change the order of icons or move them between fences. Here's a quick screen capture of the problem:
Hello kungfujoe,
I've respond your original thread.
Thank you so much for your attempts to help. (I wish Stardock would do the same!!) However, I can't find any files. If they don't fix this bug soon I will sadly have to quit using Fences.

Hi,
When a new release resolving problems with displayfusion?
Can we receive email notifications when a release is out ?
Can Fence simply auto-update?
Just upgraded from Fences 2 to Fences 4. Fences 2 was more granular for moving the blocks and the titles refuse to stay at the top when I get the fence too close to the top of the screen. There needs to be a way to pin the fence title to where you want it to stay.
So far, not really impressed with the changes to the menus as well.
Fences 4.0 worked fine with Windows 11 until I installed the latest Windows update. I then started getting error messages, so I uninstalled the update and now Fences is working fine again! I had the same problem on another laptop after a Windows automatic update, the fix was the same as above. The update is now on Pause for 5 weeks, the maximum setting. Hoping this problem will be fixed before then?
Fences 4.0.0.3 (standard configuration, I didn't change)
I'm running Fences on Win 10 pro ( Version: 21H2, SO: 19044.1706, Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.4170.0) on a two-monitor setup (1920X1080), the monitor on my right is the primary and on my left is the second.
The new program icons or files downloaded directly to the desktop are moving to the second monitor (left) they aren't going to the primary (right).
Fences 4.0.0.3 on Windows 10. The transparency of a moused-over window changes somewhere around 80% of the way down the screen. My primary monitor is 2560x1440, and if I drag a fence window around I can see a place where the background goes from grey to partially transparent. Looks like this with the window about halfway across:
The fence window is set for 60% transparency when not moused over, but the change is still visible regardless of the window's "view" setting. Also, there's a difference in how much background shows through even when it's not moused-over.
I have a dual-monitor setup, and the issue appears on both monitors. The primary monitor (which Windows assigns as #2) is 2560x1440, the secondary monitor (#1) is portrait-orientation, 1200x1920. The transparency change on the second monitor happens about 85% down the screen.
Unrelated: if you have a fence assigned as an "all new icons go to <fence>", and you deliberately create an icon in a different fence, the icon will appear in the new-icon fence after you reboot.
Hello from Germany. I'm very happy with Fences so far for many years, but now with Fences 4 (all Versions inc. Beta) i get this graphical error with every System Startup.
Win 11 Pro 21H1 Build 22000.708 (was the same on Windows 10).
If you restart Windows Explorer, is that still the case?
using portal folder
pressed backspace twice to go back and bam...crashed and can't enable fences anymore.
