Using the latest version of Start11 (2021-11-20)
Start11 causes file explorer to crash/restart constantly, which means that the taskbar, start menu, and other things crash as well.
PC and windows information if necessary:
Processor AMD Ryzen 7 3800X 8-Core Processor 4.10 GHz
Installed RAM 32,0 GB
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Edition: Windows 11 Home
Version: 21H2
Installed on: 2021-11-04
OS build: 22000.348
Experience: Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22000.348.0
Well I had to uninstall Start11 altogether on my 5 computers and switch to Fluent Search as an alternative.
I'll come back to this program later, but the constant explorer and search problems is affecting my job.
(Yes I tried production and all the Betas up to 1.22)
I'm experiencing start 11 taskbar crashes as well. Particularly with external displays. I have a lot of windows open at the moment, and I was wondering if it only being a 32bit app could cause it to crash more often when under heavy load. Just speculating my hypothesis.
I can provide more information, provide dmp files, or create a new post if you'd like.
I think they need those dmp files to see what is the cause.
I know on an earlier release of start 11 the app Minecraft was causing explorer to crash for some people (that is fixed now thanks to a report). It could be a certain program you have.
I suspect the problem is Windows and Start11 deadlocking over the search engine. I do software development and the problem happens most often for me when refactoring, searching, or heavy compilations that hits and/or changes thousands of files....
I'll be back eventually once they work it out.
Start11 is 64 bit on a 64 bit version for all that parts that matter. Only the startup service and the config UI are 32 bit. And even the startup service has a 64 bit version but I don't know if the installer is swapped to using it currently.
This is how you can create dump files : https://forums.stardock.com/505872/start11-support-faq#CrashDumps
If we can get a dmp file for an explorer crash (note this only works for crashes not hangs), then we can investigate the problem and hopefully identify the problem for you quickly.
Silly question... what's the difference between a crash and a hang? How will I know the difference?
I set up the Software to get the dump if it crashes again, unfortunately MS patched again and the lockups stopped but Start 11 and Fences are still not functioning properly.
A hang means the app stops responding. So clicking on the desktop would for example turn it white etc. A crash will cause explorer to restart itself on its own.
CAN DUPLICATE CRASH
I'll get around to the crash dumps in a bit...only have one working arm due to tendon surgery and am behind on many things.
But I did find a Start11 Explorer crash that I can duplicate reliably. If I have Dragon 15 running and I click the start button, then the power button in the start menu to restart, sleep, shut down etc., Explorer will crash every time (taskbar at top, DragonBar at top, start button at left). Just hovering over the power button will cause Explorer to crash in this condition. Shutting down Dragon alleviates.
Same here. Unfortunately I use Dragon a lot. So I have to uninstall start 11, although I have paid for it. I guess the problem is Dragon is also trying to more or less control the start menu (we can see it in Windows 10, when we click on the start button, Dragon menu appears).
Unfortunately there is no longer a trial of dragon so we cannot test it here.
Does it have any options to disable any start menu integration it may have?
Wow. You guys must be hard up for cash. Set up a Patreon and I'll send a donation.
It's important to note that explorer is crashing even if Dragon is not loaded (although some Dragon services are loaded in the background like most programs). But with Dragon active, the crashes occur much more frequently and I can "force" a crash as indicated above. That said, 1.22 seems more stable overall but I have not tested with Dragon active. Will try today and set the Dragon bar to floating to see if it makes a difference. Thanks for your help on this issue.
Easy, marrtw...
Following this to get a dump would likely be helpful:

Unfortunately it often does not make business sense to pay out for a product almost 100x as expensive as Start11 (Dragon 15 pro - I don't know what version you are using specifically) to find an issue which might not be fixable from our end and only impacts a handful of users or might not even be able to be reproduced. Multiply this by every app users might report problems with and it gets expensive fast. Hence the need for trials.
A dmp file from a crash would be helpful as it would give us more information to work on in terms of cause.
This is understandable. I just sent a request to you guys for refund. I think this is the best solution for now.

Well just putting in an update, in the last week I have had a half dozen crashes of the explorer and Start 11 and Fences are the apps being called out by the crash dump app Stardock suggested, Ive sent in the reports each time.... Start 11 is about useless now. Hope Fences doesn't go the same route,
Has Stardock had any news on the issue?
Oh and I do NOT own or use Dragon...precisely because it is expensive and I have become disabled and handicapped and it would make my life easier. Life on Disability is much harder then when I was making 150k
Where did you send the bug reports to exactly?
Understandable...but when chasing a bug, it's GOLDEN to find a situation where the bug can be duplicated easily.
Anyway, I have the dmp file. Where to send?
No Idea I just click on the "Send Report" button. Never tried to dig into it....I assuemed since Stardock wanted me to use it...it was going to them.

If you are able to host the file on a file sharing service (onedrive, dropbox, google drive) and share the link via private message to myself that would be great.
I am afraid I don't know what app you were asked to use as for Start11 debugging there is no send report option.
Fences has its own crash reporter, but that will only report crashes that Fences is somehow linked to. Anything Start11 was responsible for I wouldn't expect it to trigger on.
This is how to catch crash reports for Start11 https://forums.stardock.com/505872/start11-support-faq#CrashDumps
If you are able to catch a Start11 crash with that it would be fantastic.
Yes that is the process I used and there was a send report button in there somewhere. Next time Ill look closer.
Due to some brain damage I would need express instructions on how to do that. I believe I have One Drive set upp but do not use it much for anything.
If you have an Microsoft account you should have one drive. These instructions are for Windows 11.
1. make sure your onedrive is signed in (open onedrive, i.e.type its name in the search and make sure it signs in)
2. open explorer
3. on the very left hand side look for a folder named "OneDrive - Personal" and click to open the location
4. Add file you wish to share to that folder
5. right click the file you wish to share and click on the button "share"
6. Click the bottom option "copy link"
7. Copy the link and share the link with anyone you wish to see the file.
Well I am on 10 as my PC Cannot run 11 due to no TPM ability on my motherboard (Thanks MS for telling me Im not secure enough to run your product)
but hopefully those directions will suffice. thank you very much.
