Using the latest version of Start11 (2021-11-20)
Start11 causes file explorer to crash/restart constantly, which means that the taskbar, start menu, and other things crash as well.
PC and windows information if necessary:
Processor AMD Ryzen 7 3800X 8-Core Processor 4.10 GHz
Installed RAM 32,0 GB
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Edition: Windows 11 Home
Version: 21H2
Installed on: 2021-11-04
OS build: 22000.348
Experience: Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22000.348.0
I have re-enabled Start11 since disabling it on November 26 and have installed Start11 v1.01 Beta.I find that after waking the computer from sleep that it can sometimes be a troublesome time.I'll see how it runs this time. 👍
Does this only happen when performing searches? If so, if you set Start11 to use Start10 style search (option bottom of Search page in Start11 settings), does it continue?
Mostly, but not entirely. Sometimes, when just clicking on a filtered application from a search, it crashes. I'll try the older 10 search, but even if it works, we still know the culprit is Start11.
It would help narrow down the issue as two different code paths are used.
In early development we had to make changes to search to make it less parallel because we found some third party explorer extensions were sometimes prone to causing crashes due to a threading issue. It may be linked to that still as the new search is still considerably quicker than the S10 style.
It sounds like the problem is only occurring having done a search, either whilst searching, or when closing a search (be that by clicking on something from Search, or cancelling it by closing the menu)?

You are right regarding narrowing it down, of course. I didn't realize you were from Stardock.
The issue occurs in two places for me:
When I search, and when I launch from the search results. However it is not every time, and I've not been able to reproduce it on command.
So far, using 10 search has not crashed, but I will play around with it more today and let you know.
I too have issues with explorer crashing when trying to search. If I turn off "Use Start11 search ... ", search works fine with no explorer crashes.Update: found the 1.01 beta and it seems to have resolved the issue - still testing though.
2nd Update (12/22): Just uninstalled Start11, continued to crash. Holding off any other purchases; such as Fences, until this is resolved.
After using it for a couple days, I have found that the crashing has stopped on Start11 1.0 and 1.0.1 when I use Start10 search. I tried it on Windows 10 and 11.
I have also noticed this issue, with Start11. It hadn't happened since updating to version 1.01 (on Wednesday), but about 30 mins ago I searched for a program, explorer.exe crashed. Once it reloaded I search and open the program I wanted. Next I wanted another program. Search - crash. Three searches, two crashes. Span of at least two minutes or less.
When will this be fixed once and for all?
As a short term workaround set search in Start11 settings to Start10 style.
We think there is a third-party shell extension involved here but continue to investigate.
Do you mean enabling "Use old Start10 style search"? If so, it has always been enabled.
Turning the first option off, "Use Start11 search in the Start11 start menu" would mean I have no clue how to go about doing a start menu search.

Hello,
If you need a list of what I have installed that hooks into Explorer, please let me know.
The problem continues, and I have yet to receive a reply to my previous post.
I did not pay money for software that crashes explorer.exe. When will this be fixed?
Hi Stevie.Have you checked your local crash dump log files located at:
%LocalAppdata%\CrashDumps
Ate those going to provide anything event logs do not? Because those imply Start11 is the reason for the Explorer crash, though disabling Start11 search seems to alleviate it. It is too bad because it’s aesthetically nicer which is the whole point.
Are there no other dump files in there with the corresponding timestamp of when the crash happens? If not, I would still analyze the dump file that is in there with WinDbg and look for MODULE_NAME and IMAGE_NAME.
It doesn't really provide anything we didn't already know, it is crashing when searching. Ironically enough, I was searching and opening event viewer when this one came up. The moment I selected it, Explorer crashed.

It'd be helpful if the newest version of Start11 would download so I can upgrade. So far its stalled at 2.59MB and now again 5.91MB. When will this be fixed?
With regards to this issue (crashing during / soon after a search) we have made changes to Start11 search in the upcoming v1.11 build (current is 1.1) which moves S11 search (but not S10 style for technical reasons) out of explorer.
Hopefully this resolves some of these reports.
I have two computers, both fresh installs of Windows 11 (not 10 and then upgraded) that also have this explorer crash problem.
Other than software development tools there isn't anything special on these machines.
When is 1.11 being released? Or a beta accessible to licensed users?
I'd like to know when 1.11 is expected as well. This search issue has been very frustrating for sure. I've had difficulty in locating the betas, but I understand they are available to licensed users. I'd certainly be willing to install the beta in place of my 1.1 on my machines to test.
I believe, the current V1.1.1.1 Beta is Start11 V1.11 Beta. Have you tried it? https://forums.stardock.com/509537
Thank you,

I just installed the beta version. I'll let you know how it goes once some time has passed.
Thank you! I just installed the beta version on 2 machines and I'll report back any issues re: search.
Seems to be much more stable now with the Beta
The beta is definitely an improvement where search in concerned. Much more stable so far.
Pleased to hear it and ty for the update.
