Just updated and now the Start Menu doesn't function. When it does its slow and unresponsive.
Clicking the Start button either doesnt work or required multiple clicks to respond. And when it does respond the animation is slow and jerky and clicks are also slow.
How do I roll back? This is completely unusable.
Thanks.
It sounds like something is using a lot of cpu.
Does task manager show anything using high CPU?
Also are the other styles suffering the same problem?
The other menus dont seem to be affected, but I do have a lot more icons on the Windows 10 version.
As for CPU usage I can see that Windows Explorer does spike when opening the Start Menu. From around 2% to sometimes over 15%
Other than that there are no significant CPU drains. In General CPU usage is around 5% in total. (i7 9700K @5Ghz).
Prior to the update everything worked perfectly. I can see that Windows Apps icons are now large and look like Tiles rather than icons.

Update. It may be a GPU issue. I can see that Desktop Manager spikes in GPU usage when attempting to open the menu . From .5% to 20%. I run an RTX3080 and I can see the clock speeds jumping from idle to full speed when attempting to open the Start Menu. Potentially the problem.
This was not an issue in the previous version.
Correction. The Windows 11 version is also affected
Did you enable the special registry key to enable it to render tiles vs icons?
Icons should be the default still, tiles would only show if you turned on the experimental option.
If not could you post a screenshot of your menu please.
It might be worth uninstalling Start11, rebooting and then reinstalling to see if that helps.
GPU usage will go up during open as it animates in which will use the GPU. This will be based on the refresh rate of your monitor. Do you have a greater than 60hz monitor?
I have not changed any Registry Entries, and did not know there was an experimental option to do so.
I had previously used Pin More, TileIconify, and Better Start Menu to change and modify tiles, but all were uninstalled when I upgraded to Windows 11.
Here is what my menu looks like.
The "Tiles" are all Windows Apps or games installed from Game Pass which operate like Windows Apps,

However the Blizzard and GOG.Com icons in the centre column seem to be grabbing old custom Tile graphics I made from somewhere.
Can you provide the registry info so I can access the experimental mode(s)?
Uninstalling/Reinstalling has not helped responsiveness, performance, and reliability are all awful.
Again, I will add that I had none of these issues prior to the update. Am I able to roll back?
I think the plan is to put out another update today so I would rather we solved your issue if we can.
If you go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Stardock\Start8\Start8.ini\Start8 and create a REG_SZ entry called LoadTiles and set it to 0 and then sign out and in again does this help?
Also by responsiveness do you mean that scrolling say the all apps tree with the scrollbar is extremely slow too?
Same is happening for me too
Does setting the registry key above help?
Registry had not helped sadly. Although now the Windows Apps are showing the small icons I had previously when I repinned them after adding the Reg entry.
The scrolling is slower, I would say sluggish. Not hugely, but definitely noticeable.
The odd behaviour is that sometimes the Start Button works fine and seems pretty responsive. When this happens I can click on it rapidly and it works as expected. Then later for no reason it just doesn't work and multiple clicks have no effect
I have also noticed that when the Start Menu does not open the Start Button shows being pressed, but does not depress. Clicking it again sometimes resolves this and completes the "press button" animation and then the Start Menu will open.
Using the Windows Key does seem to work correctly. Which is to say it has not failed to open the Start Menu yet. Hope this helps.
Please improve the performance issues.
Can you be more specific about the performance issues please as it runs just fine on a variety of hardware here so we need more information on what you are finding to be slow.
A video of it would be especially useful.
Auch ich kann das hier geschilderte Problem bestätigen. Bei mir ist leider auch die Windows-Taste auf der Tastatur betroffen.
Hi!
I have the same problem.
The Start menu opens after repeated clicks and the animation stalls.
I have set the registration key but no live tiles are visible.
The tile icon is bigger than it was before.
Is that right?
Is the registry entry correct? (See the picture)
Registry screen capture
Hallo, habe es mit dem Schlüssel "LoadTiles" versucht. Brachte leider keinen Erfolg
Here is what I have noticed, although all my issues have been much more mild.
* Occasionally start button does not open with win11 taskbar but seems to open every time with win10 taskbar
* Occasionally start button animations stutter, particularly when switching pages
* The actual icons seem to be more crisp and clear then before, is this from a higher pixel ratio then before or is it my imagination
* Stuttering is not constant for me, sometimes I see no issues at all
* If I were to guess, the variable would be the amount of apps pinned to the menu
Hopefully the 0.94 update has helped everyone here?
New Update has not resolved the issues. As far as I can see it has made no difference at all.
0.94
The Start menu works. Animation is normal.
But the tiles are only visible when I hover the cursor over them. Does it six times out of ten.
And unfortunately the icons on tiles reduced to small again!!!
Reinstallation did not work.
Sorry for english. I hurry.
Can you uninstall, reboot and then reinstall 0.94 as the feedback from others is the animations are back to normal now so want to rule out install issue.
Guten Morgen,
Sonst müsste man wieder alles Neu hinzufügen.
I have done this, and the lagginess seems to be resolved, but clicking the start button is still not working correctly. It works most of the time now, but not consistently. Adding a background image to the Start Menu makes things noticeably worse in terms of consistency in opening as causes a slight performance issue with the opening animation.
I have located one of the triggers for the issue.
Clicking on any Pinned App on the Start Menu, or shortcut located on the All Apps list causes the Start Button to stop working. However clicking on Shortcut List on the far right does not affect the Start Button functionality.
