We are putting together the schedule to make WindowBlinds 11.
Customization is a lot harder now than it used to be. Microsoft, for reasons unknown, has actively encouraged developers to take care of their own client and even non client (border, frame) painting rather than using standard Windows controls.
Microsoft's baffling decision to throw away trying to provide a standard set of in-app controls for developers and instead provide vague, often conflicting standards (cough, Fluent) has resulted in having less and less of the OS we can even touch.
Which is unfortunate because WindowBlinds, in theory, could actually give Windows users a consistent, OS-wide Fluent if apps weren't handling the drawing of their own UIs these days.
Still, with that in mind, there are things we can do such as skin the standard OS controls and then handle apps on a case-by-case basis. Keep in mind though, the more non-standard apps we have to handle, the harder it is for us to keep compatibility.
Earlier this year we released Curtains which doesn't even hook into the OS. This means it is 100% compatible. Skins, even the weirdest ones, won't break a given app. Of course, the price is that it doesn't skin nearly as much (no client area GUI controls like scrollbars, push buttons, radio buttons, etc.). It's done quite well. However, we know there are still plenty of people out there who would like to have more full control over how their Windows desktop looks.
That's where this thread comes in: What would you like to see in WindowBlinds 11?
Is there not anyone here from Stardock marketing or PR to fix that typo and detail it for god's sake? Even after 20 years with that this stubborn lack of communication still drives me crazy.
I would recommend a clean install of Windows 11, so far I have the latest CursorFX, Iconpackager and ObjectDock working just fine, and of course Start 11.
So how about a ball park time then? I know things change with software though and I for one wont hold you to the date.
Currently Start 11 version 0.90, Curtains version 1.19 and Fences version 3.1.3.3 work under Windows 11 Pro, no errors. As always your mileage may vary depending on which Curtains theme is loaded.
Normally, I would do the same. However, I have since upgraded several machines that do not have TPM2.0and a much lower CPU than MS recommends or requires. We started by upgrading two very old machines, one getting a clean install and the other an inplace upgrade(A bit of cheating was invlved to make this work on a Core Duo ).
With the only difference being that the applications and data are still available on one.
You mean other than not applying titlebar images other than buttons?
I would expect 2022 myself rather than 2021 but exact dates depend on so many things and whilst you may not hold SD to a date, others will.
I'd like to see Microsoft being held to a date when its OS was declared stable.
I'm relatively happy with my OS ver.....could even declare it stable too.
People might have heard of it. Win 7. Pretty much a decade and a half after release......
I might try Win 11 sometime after 2030. Most bugs will be sorted by then....
I am happy with Win 11 using it as my productive environment even before October, 5. Running stable and smooth for all my purposes even professional and looking good. That "Old OS times where better" mantra is really getting worn. If Stardock for different reasons (one of them may still be the lack of developers I guess) is not able to hold up to the progress so be it. But always blaming 'evil' MS for changing things gets old.
2030 lol! Seriously, my plan is to wait until Windows 10 is no longer supported ( I believe 2025 ). Currently I just don't see any benefit in upgrading to Windows 11 that would outweigh the pain of early adoption. In particular all of my Stardock software works fine and I don't see any reason for possibly breaking it.
I installed Windows 11 on a new PC I got, probably just going to use it for learning about that OS until WB and SKS 11 come out (I hope) and testing other software. Will just keep using my Windows 10 system for now.
Can we be notified via email when wb11 is out?
I am certain marketing will ensure anyone on the mailing list gets an email when WB11 is out or even enters beta.
Thank you
I don't believe it's a typo anymore, otherwise the people who work for stardock on this board would have already said it is. I hope I'm wrong but I believe their silence speaks volumes. They have no intention of releasing window blinds 11 until 2023.
I actually purchase the entire Suite so that way I could have window blinds 11 assuming that it would be out right after Windows 11 was released. My idea was there was no sense just paying for start 11 when within a few weeks window blinds 11 would be out also.
Comment 207...
Well I only ever used my own skin that I created, I hope it works OK with WB11
Yeah I got to admit I miss that. With that being said, saying in 2022 is political ambiguity. I expect politicians to talk like that. It could be in 2 months or over a year that's a lot of leeway my friend. 😏
I believe most people posting here would rather have a little more definitive time frame 1st quarter 2nd quarter excetera.
Peace
The only reason why I'm using Windows 11 is because I have one engineering program that the newest version requires Windows 10 or 11. Otherwise I'd still be on Windows 7 I have no problem with that I'm dual-booting. I personally see Windows 11 infinitely more user-friendly than Windows 10. I find it funny people are calling Windows 10 classic, for me it's anything but classic. Actually I see Windows 11 more classic then Windows 8 or 10 but it's little too classic it reminds me of Windows cross between 3.11 and 95. Hence I'll use window blinds in order to make it look and function the way I prefer.
The problem is the false perception that once Microsoft has released an OS it is 'finished' and never fundamentally changes. That is very definitely not the case with Redmond's current policy of releasing into the wild and relying on the general user to be an expansive beta testing pool. In the past an OS went 'gold' and was released for 'safe' public use, only getting [mostly] simplistic revisions that were relatively harmless. [history demonstrates 'relatively harmless' is relative].
There has been a general change for people now wanting to embrace all that is new, no matter what it is...with the common misunderstanding that all that is new MUST be better. Mostly it isn't.
People claim that 10 is fantastic...the bees knees....and yet I have one machine that stoically REFUSES to update itself. Once it became non mission-critical. I forcibly installed a new version over the original so it was 'current'...and lo and behold...it still refuses to update.
My Win 7 is extremely long in the teeth as an installed OS, being imaged from a previous install on another box....so essentially been operating 24/7/365 for about 15 years... and yes, it has issues....Safe Mode does not exist anymore, but I get around it. Only time it gets a reboot is when I have an OOM issue with an old 32bit proggy that doesn't see all the RAM.
As for Windowblinds...it's possibly THE program MOST dependent on an OS to remain unaltered and not at the whim of MS to be constantly fiddling. It hooks into the shell on fundamental levels that a normal program has no reason to.
There will always be a 'lead time' between what Joe Public thinks is an OS and what becomes one that stays relevant long enough to have its shell revised.
There is quite a bit of difference between "well, 11 works on my machine just fine so it must be stable and capable of being designed for", and "11 works for everyone equally without fault and is ready for general use"....
So does that mean you cannot give a definitive date? Not even a close proximity of a quarter? You need a cushion of 365 days! 😏
As far as Microsoft not changing anything statistically speaking by the time Windows reaches a public beta the UI is done. Even with Windows 7 one of the best received version of Windows it was Zero changes in the u i in the public beta.
JCurie...I personally cannot give a date...I'm actually 8001 miles [according to Qantas] from LA...and Michigan is even further.
You're new, so can I suggest you just follow specifically what Frogboy says, and what Neil Banfield says. The former is Stardock's CEO, and the latter is the Windowbinds' creator.
The only advice at current is comment #213 ...
Excetera....lol..ok.
Would it really be that hard for someone who has at least a good idea, based on solid Intel, when will we see a WB 11.
Were all paying Customers, and without us no software would be popular and no Software houses would exist.
The lack of solid coms from any staff member can only hurt the brand.
PLEASE TELL US SOMETHING, WHY ARE YOU LETTING THIS THREAD GO ON AND ON, SOMEONE MUST BE IN A PLACE TO INFORM US ALL ABOUT THE FUTURE OF WB 11.
