Stardock Releases v1.9 Update for Start10, The Popular Windows Start Menu Application
Stardock released v1.9 for Start10, an easy-to-use program that returns the familiar Start menu to Windows 10, today. The update includes quality of life improvements, language updates, and more.
With Start10, users can select the familiar Windows 7 style menu or the Modern design as the foundation of a custom Start menu experience. Changing out colors, applying textures, and setting up filtered searches are just a few ways that Start10 blends the best of what users are looking for when launching their favorite applications. People who use Stardock's award-winning desktop software, Fences, can enjoy that same organization right from within the Start menu.
“No one wants to spend a long time searching for things on their desktop,” said Brad Wardell, CEO of Stardock. “Start10 makes it easy to establish search filters and navigate your apps. This new update improves the interaction with the Windows 10 search bar, enhances performance, and improves compatibility with another one of our popular apps, WindowBlinds.”
v1.9 also includes jumplist support, updated French and Dutch translations, and more.
Start10 is $4.99 and is available through Stardock or on Steam. See a video of Start10 in action here, view more info here, and get additional media assets on our press page.

Stardock says "This new update improves the interaction with the Windows 10 search bar, enhances performance, and improves compatibility with another one of our popular apps, WindowBlinds.” lmao guess they didn't test it properly. Too funny.
Actually the latest one is v1.91

In regards of Start10 Start Menu issues, please, anyone, link me to one "free" skin that I can download and verify.
I find that very offensive Neil. Skins I designed in the past that worked perfectly on all aspects have over the years had several issues with Stardock updates. I have been working for over a year doing updates to fix them! For instance, my Cozy skin RedneckDude posted an image of (the green and orange one), was perfect with Start 10 1.8, no issues. My Zeta skin from a little while ago was perfect too, but using Start 10 1.9, it was screwed up. I take offense to your comment saying skinners are not designing their skins correctly. Maybe Stardock needs some better programmers!
Sorry if that wasn't worded well as I quickly responded without time to investigate further.
I initially thought this was the fairly common issue where skin authors had assumed the right hand side would never change size and thus not set margins correctly on things. It is always important to remember the right hand side does change size depending on OS language. This as you will recall showed up again when we added the "Install updates" text to the shutdown button and it became apparent certain offsets were being used in unexpected ways. There was no proper solution for that and some skins that used offsets to centre the shutdown button may not work 100% as the author originally intended when the shutdown button has longer text.
However I have checked this morning and can reproduce the problem and it is a different issue. Everything is fine at 100% dpi scaling, it is purely broken at higher dpi scalings and this points to a double scaling of certain margins which would be in the code end of WB or Start10 (possibly both).
Oddly it seems to be only showing with some of your skins so I suspect you are setting some margins which are getting multiplied and most skins are leaving the values at 0 thus 0 x anything is 0 and no issues shows up. This explains why the included skins work fine and could explain why we do not have bug reports about this during the long beta process we had for 1.9.
I will look to see this is addressed and ensure our QA team properly test things at alternate DPIs as this should have been caught internally.
Not a skinner but a buyer so if I update a bunch of my paid skins wont work right and it is the skinners fault? Yeah that goes over like a lead balloon.Fix your software not the boatload of skins out there. Wont be spend another dollar here ( sorry Masters blame Stardock ) .Your software up to you, but like most of the customize userbase I am out.
Don't worry, if the issue is the dpi scaling issue then your existing skins will continue to work as we have identified an issue,
Only skins which are not designed to let the right hand side expand may have issues that will not be resolved as that will be a skin design issue. The same skins would have had issues on foreign versions of Windows where certain text is longer in older versions of Start10 too.
I incorrectly though the report was about the later, but it seems it is an unrelated issue which is a bug and should be fixed soon.
Thank you Neil for explaining your comment, I appreciate it. I hope all issues, with all Stardock products, can be fixed in the near future.
Thanks Neil.
Further info on the root cause as I was wrong about it being dpi sensitive.
Some skins with 1.8 had an issue with the longer shutdown text when updates were pending. The skins typically tried to centre the shutdown button using the shift option for the shutdown button. This naturally relied on the width of the button being a known thing which it isn't when the text changes. This also changes for non English installs of Windows so the button was off centre on those OSes already (German and Russian probably the worst affected).
We put in an attempted workaround for this in 1.9 but it seems this caused issues with some skins which could not be expanded due to their design (an example being Ploppy). This skin for example cannot be resized on the right hand side because the top and bottom sections will shift more than the middle. The workaround made things wider and thus this problem was being exposed.
We have a pending update (1.92) which should try to do the best we can to handle both conflicting issues (button shifted, no room for button so should make bigger, but can't as would break skin) where it will try to shift the button left again if there is no room on the right. Obviously this has limitations and will only work if there is room. If there is not room then the right hand side will be expanded and any visual issues will be unfortunate but expected. Hopefully most skins did at least have sufficient width to handle this.
Yep, Ploppy is fine on Start 10 1.8, hope the issue can be fixed Neil.
If the text exceeds a certain length skins like Ploppy will break because the right hand side cannot be made any wider without it breaking.
By the looks of it that skin is happy with our 1.92 version in English but I cannot promise anything for languages which are considerably more wordy when it has pending updates to install.
Working in other languages has always been a problem with some applications, I am sure you are doing the best you can Neil.
Well, as for the "shutdown" button text, I have it set to align right, assuming if the text is too long, it'd expand to the left, unless I"m wrong here.
Hello all,
Have a test build for the reported issues with some WB skins:

Let us know and thank you for the feedback.

Just installed the text build Sean, apparently the issues are resolved here, still checking though, but skins that had no issues with V1.8 are fine now in this beta release. Thank you!
Thanks much Sean, I'll download, and install.
OK, found a bug. If I do style changes between Windows 7 Style, Modern Style and Windows 10 Style, then go back to Windows 7 Style, the start menu gets totally messed up again, reapply the skin did nothing, but rebooting puts it back to normal.
Hope someone working for Stardock is checking this thread.
Hello,Sorry to hear you are having issues. And sorry for my late respond, since I can't reproduce your issue on both of my systems. And I was waiting from someone else positing their similar issue here. Maybe details on your steps and specific on your setup like
1) Windows 10 version, please use Winver.exe for full Windows 10 version numbers.
2) Start10 version.
Thanks

Ok, so CFX4 seems fixed. Do I dare try this?
Nope. Still messes up start menus for me.
I suspect you are either running into the issue LightStar reported with changing between styles, or the install didn't work correctly and you still have 1.91 files installed.
We are and have issued advice for skinners going forwards here :

Testing with Start10 1.8 is showing the very same issue with swapping between modern and a WB theme. Best I can tell 1.92 is acting exactly how 1.8 did in this regard.
