ive just changed from normal fences to a folder portal so that my Desktop isnt so packed when i open it via Explorer. But is there an option anywhere where i can open the file location of a shortcut without it opening inside the folder portal?as in just right click > open file location and it opens in a new window.
Hello,
Not really clear and sure what you are trying to do. Maybe a bit more details on what you intend to do.
Thank you,
BasjStardock Community Assistant.
sorry, i shouldve been more detailed.what i mean is, if you were to right click a shortcut / prorgam etc. inside the Folder Portal and open its folder location, it just opens the location "inside" the folder portal, rather than in a new windows explorer.
Please try disable (un-tick) "Allow Navigation" on your 3 bar menu on that portal fence and try again.
Hope this is what you wanted.
tried it but it only disables navigation overall.as in, after unchecking it, nothing happens when i try and open the file location.
Please make a video grab of this issue and post it here.

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.
I cant seem to reproduce what you are seeing:

Perhaps a purge and reinstall is in order:

Hello Stardock Support,
I have the same issue here;
When Navigation within a FolderPortal is disabled, RightClick on shortcut -> "open File location" will not do anything.
The same behavior is when the shortcut is linked to a Folder; "open Folder location" is not doing anything.
If the File is not in a Folderportal, it will work normally.
Hello,Sorry to hear you are having issues. Have you done purge and reinstall as mentioned in reply#8?
ThanksBasj,Stardock Community Assistant.
Hello Basj,
as far as I saw reply#8 did not really understand the problem. He added a video where he shows how he is not able to reproduce the issue. But he did not even try to click on a shortcut, he simply just opened a .zip File.
Quoting JanOscar, reply 11Rigt clicking on a shortcut and selcting open file location does nothing and I think that is as intended.
Why should standard Windows functionality "not doing anything" if used within a Folder portal be "intended"?
If you are right this would be a typical case of “That's not a bug, that's a feature!”

But, you can, while allow navigation turn on. Double click on that shortcut folder. Will open it inside the Fences. Double click on empty space inside that fence will open up Explorer Windows to that folder. Yes?
Basj,Stardock Community Assistant
yes, when Navigation is enabled it will work within the Folderportal. Also "open file location" is working, but just within the portal (it will not open in new explorer window).
But when Navigation is disabled it will not do anything on "open file location".
Hello BR Michi,
You on Windows 10 or 11? I am on Windows 10 and I can open new explorer Window if I double click on that Fence empty area. As I detail in Reply#13
can you please try what I described in Reply#9 ? I am using Win10. I am right-clicking on a Shortcut to a File and using the option "Open File location".
Thanks,
Michi
I know that command is not working. Not really sure if that is by design or limitation of how Portal Fences work. I was just pointing out another way to open up Explorer to that Shortcut folder. Which is the same end result as what you want, no?
Ahh, okay sorry i missunderstood.
The workaround is not working, as it is opening the Folder the shortcut is inside.
Intended behavior would be to open the Folder where the original file from shortcut is placed.
Strange, it work for me and here another work around..
Note:
thanks for your help. Yes, that workaround works for me also.
But from what you did at 0:45 I can see that there is also nothing happening when you try the direct way without the workaround.
Since this is a Bug since 2019, can it somehow be forwarded as a "future improvement" to the Fences Developers?
I understand there is a workaround and resolution of this Bug would be on very low priority,
but I would love to see this resolved in one of the future releases.
Best Regards,
