I have just started to get the following error message - "Fences has detected that Explorer was not closed properly. As a precaution, Fences has been temporarily disabled. To re-enable Fences, right click your desktop and choose Enable Fences" I tried restarting my PC and even uninstalling and re-installing Fences but I continue to get this error message and the application will not start.
i just had this start to day and the crashing is a pain so what is this slideshow to image option that i could try
I know the feeling:)))
You can try, but I don't if it is working for you....
My setup is in danish, but find personalization and background - change from slideshow to image/picture.
I really don't why or how it could help, but it worked right away.
I have had Fences for 8 years and never had this problem before.

This thread will likely shed some more light on what is causing your issue...

it a shame what was a good product is dead
i would have thought a new update would be out by now to fix this problem
Fences was working properly for me.
Then i got that message after updating fences this morning and restarting my laptop.

Do let us know if that works for you.
Hi there, I just experienced this issue (right after installing Visual C++ into VS 2019 and rebooting - may be coincidence) and I noticed that Fences 3 was loading my first two Fences and then crashing with the aforementioned error.
I was able to resolve the problem by removing all Groups with ID > 1 (since the first two groups were loading ok) from HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Stardock\Fences\Groups. After this, I was able to launch Fences and recreate the missing Folder Portals.
i have this situation also,
(https://forums.stardock.com/507124/page/1/#3821272)
at the end I reinstalled the old version of Fences_3.09.
After a few days, there is no "Fences has detected that Explorer was not closed Properly Error Message" situation so far.
Can you elaborate more on this?
What were the Group IDs that you removed - were they all folder portals? If they were, and you recreated them, did you see any errors after?
For anyone still seeing this, we REALLY need someone to use this to help us resolve it. Please review the following and direct all posts here:
