As we work on the next version of Fences, we are interested in getting your feedback on what you'd like to see.
We are particularly interested in features that will make Fences more useful in your work and enterprise environment.
Please comment below with any ideas and suggestions you might have.
Thanks!
It would be great to be able to use file viewers, like QuickLook or Seer Pro, to preview files stored in Fences. These programs make use of the space bar to launch a preview of the selected file, much like Preview on macOS. If this is already possible, I'm missing something because I can't figure out how to do it. Thanks!
Also, a right click option to open the folder a file shortcut points at as a new explorer window. For example you have a shortcut to a game exe on one of your fences, you want to open the folder of the game in an explorer (not in fences), but you can't, as of now if you click "Open file location" it opens it within fences, "Open in new window" is only available on folders.
Also, since I upgraded Windows 10.1803 to 10.1809 Fences have new bug - dark mode affects Fences label text color.
It forces to black no matter of dark or light mode - I must manually update color settings.
This needs to be fixed.

Very useful feature will be sending Fences of monitor 2 to monitor 1, but leave Fences on monitor 3 without moving.
Even - individual Fences moving to other monitor.
I think my wishes have mostly all been mentioned.
But there are a few things I'd really want to emphasize:
1) The roll- up fences are such a bliss. My desktop is clean like a babys butt. The left- to right and vice- versa would really make the roll- ups complete.
2) Sometimes, after some weird errors, I still get a error message with a language that looks to me like chzech or polish or something. Please fix that and make one fences stable and uniform. Not sometimes german, sometimes english, sometimes chzech (or whatever).
3) The auto- arrange option is working quite well for me. But there should be things like weblinks, steam- links, certain data- types etc.
4) Make the menu and context menu uniform and not splattered all over the place. In context- menu: Make a divider which is showing all fences- options. The menu of fences itself should also be more uniform in that it has not as much "links" to wherever and is solid one language, better arranged.
Other than that, I think all other things I'd like to see were mentioned already.
Only one thing remains, though:
Make fixing all bugs before top priority, please. Dont do half baked stuff. Fences was always a bit half- baked but still was a functioning piece of gold. But if you could really make a solid one this time, I'd be very happy. Please also note that many people still use Win7.
Thats what I had to say.
Thank you for this beautiful program which totally changed my productivity and way I use my PC.
I have been using fences for a while and I like it very much, but if I make the changes listed below, it can be a much better program.
That's all for now.
Compatibility with "Wallpaper Engine" would be a nice thing to have. this is what i see with fences and wallpaper engine active https://pasteboard.co/I7L7Tt9.png
i would like to see the backgrounds from wallpaper engine, rather than the default background if its possible
COLOR MANAGEMENT
Considering that there must be some sort of index behind the color sliders it would be useful to have the slider positions displayed at the end of the rows. This would allow the easy replication of net colors to other Fences either by sliding to specific positions, or perhaps by simply entering the position. A more complex solution wold be to assign and display a complex number/code which would represent the entire net effect of the sliders - ie: a code which includes all of the slider positions and which could be specified as the 'color' for other Fences.
PRECISION SIZING AND POSITIONINGConsider allowing precision sizing and positioning using cursor keys.Perhaps while holding a mouse click on the Title Bar.A real plus would be to show the coordinates of the screen position while it is being moved and have them available for future viewing in the upper left information dropdown.
ICON FONT COLOR
Allow a way to override the Icon Text Font color. I find the Windows insistence that it knows better very frustrating.
The ability to stack hidden fences on top of eachother and to open them without them overlapping eachother
The current set up limits the width of the title bar to the width of the open fence.
If the title and fence were set at different sizes you could have something like the mock up below. This would allow a quick click, view & double-click without having to scroll.
This is obviously only for slide out fences where the contents will not change the position of any other fences or desktop icons.
I hope you like my idea.
Thanks,
Nigel
Would be a good idea to roll up/down a fence with a single click instead of a double click
I think some of this is covered, but if I could get something like below, it would be awesome:
I will try to explain.
This is a company customized file organization system that would sit on all employees desktop giving them a hyperlink to controlled documents in a pictorial fashion. Perhaps (GUI) but when I search for that I get many other things. I just want to display my files to my employees on their desktop so they can always see the latest and greatest and not change them.
What I am struggling with in Fences is the ability to lock files inside the fence, to place them in a vertical orientation and to do a fence inside a fence and lock others out from making changes. Perhaps this is not the best application, but a new application. Any advice if this is not a fences topic is greatly appreciated.
In the picture below, I hope to show the following:
1. Dark borders would be fences. therefore, a total of 69 fences.
2. Blue would be fences that would be a either a title or a single file.
3. The grid would be fences of hyperlinked files with unique file names, etc....
4. Ability to customize with company logo within the outside fence.
5. This could be done with ICONS or lists.
Very long time ago... but:
In case of folder portals can be useful to allow user defined sorting or positioning icons.
Also generally, it can be pretty to allow user to enable/disable align to grid and also grid customization.
Also - nice feature can be to allow select as folder portal "This computer"I'm using Fences very often like Explorer replacement.
.
I'm using 3 desktops and to avoid disorder Fences moving after any crash I'm using layout snapping.
Only one thing cannot avoid - since dark theme exists labels are at start or Explorer crash black! This need to fix, it is challenge to doing it always manually.
Adding the features on this post would be very useful https://forums.stardock.com/495352/page/1/#3751969
Hi Guys
I have been using Fences since it was released on various systems I have had over the years, but one little thing that I would dearly love to have control over is the fence headers. Currently I use the title with underscores each side to highlight the width of my fences and what icons are encompassed by it. I would love you to make the header so you could make it a different colour or its transparency denser than the actual fence so it stands out more, especially on HDPI screens.
Not sure if this would be possible but I just thought I would throw the idea in the room for a future update.
Keep up the good work,
Andy
Hi!
Useful feature can be to have Fences tabbed.
Simply switching between fences created this way by click on tab.
Some feature requests I have for Fences V4 would be the following:
1. Fix the load time for fences to appear upon logon. I've previously posted to the forums about this along with other people. When logging on without Fences installed my desktop icons are immediately showing on screen. With Fences installed it can take up to 10 seconds before the icons and fences appear after logon. If I right click immediately after logon the fences will appear after the right click. Presumably this is due to Fences not being loaded fast enough during logon and right clicking causes Fences to be prioritized due to Fences being in the right click context menu. I'm running an i5-7300HQ with a Samsung 970 EVO PCI-e drive. This is a laptop with NVIDIA Optimus graphics (Intel HD 630 and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Max-Q switching). Could the Optimus technology have anything to do with this?
2. I'd really like to see a Mac OS X like launcher option similar to this product. Specifically having the groups inside of a fence that would expand when opened similarly to on iOS devices. This could also apply to the forum comments in the link below about minimizing into an icon rather than a roll up bar.

https://forums.stardock.com/495352/page/1/#3751969
3. As others have stated being able to left, center, or right justify the fence title would be appreciated.
That's about all I can think of for now.
Regards,
SydeEye
I haven't seen this request, but I don't think I'll be buying Fences without it!
Objects with long filenames are ugly and confusing when displayed below a large icon on the Desktop (and currently in Fences). Fences is a great opportunity to solve this problem, but it has not done so.
I would like to see a 'list view' added to normal Fences (as opposed to Folder Portals, which already have a list view), so you can see a small icon and the full names of the objects/files beside them. You could also order them either alphabetically, or a custom order by dragging. This would mimic, for instance, the drop-down bookmark lists in Chrome.
The reason I don't want to use Portals for this is:
· The items in a Folder Portal can't be custom ordered.· I would need to maintain a real folder full of the items, shortcuts and links somewhere, which diminishes the point of using Fences. I would rather just keep the actual items in a Fence on the Desktop, rather than displaying a mirror of items that have to be organised and maintained elsewhere.
EDIT: I just discovered that Folder Portals need to have the 'refresh' button clicked, so it's not a live mirroring of the folder. That drastically reduces their usefulness. IMO the contents of the Portals needs to be updated automatically for this feature to be useful.
