As we work on the next version of Fences, we are interested in getting your feedback on what you'd like to see.
We are particularly interested in features that will make Fences more useful in your work and enterprise environment.
Please comment below with any ideas and suggestions you might have.
Thanks!
Something like this would be nice to have. Plus instead of "Adobe" text you would be able to use icons/ pictures.
This thread is now over two years old, it would be interesting to get some sort of feedback on ANY progress regarding this application. At this point, considering the years that have passed, there must have been some kind of progress in terms of optimization and features? Unfortunately, the information flow on this is not available but I would be very interested to know. Please correct me if im wrong and point me to a thread if one exists. This application is probably the most anticipated in your arsenal, in terms of a clean desktop and for those who don't need a visual beautification of the Windows GUI.

I would love an option to center the icons in the fence when when the fence is not a size exactly on the icon grid. if its not one of the snapped sizes the area to the left of the leftmost icon will be smaller than the area to the right of the rightmost icon.
I know I'm far from the first person to request this, but I'd LOVE to be able to use my custom filters to sort link icons by protocol, or even by RegEx.
This would enable both advanced users, and gamers like myself, to sort icons by a TRULY custom filter. For example, a Fence for games that has either a URL filter for links containing "steam://" or "com.epicgames.launcher://", or even a RegEx searching the URL for a path to a subfolder (for example, mine are all in X:\Games).
Obviously it might be a bit of a challenge to retrofit RegEx into the software, but even something that'd be able to filter by protocol or subfolder would be an amazing addition.
I don't know the reason my previous post deleted so i have to post this again.I you'd like to see a free upgrade of fences 4 for those who have already buy v3.
I would find it very benificial when I have open windows on my desktop and I need to use Fences that the Fence would drop down and come to the front of all open windows that are on my desktop so I could see the contents of the Fence in use, this could be made into an option that the user could toggle and would ease the problem of having to rearrange the open windows just to see the contents of the Fence. Kind Regards.
Fences works with Microsoft's placement of Desktop Icons at their required level, that is, beneath any and all open Windows, active [in focus] or not [in background].
This is called a 'Z-Order' which defines what can and cannot be on top of other components.
Lowest level is the Desktop Wallpaper.
Above that are the Icons.
Above those are the active Windows [open]
And typically above that are such things as [most] notifications, windows menus, etc.
Fences was never intended as a Dock-type addon [which can have elevated levels as it is essentially another Window].
If Fences were ever to be altered to exist at an elevated level it would not actually be 'Fencing' the Desktop Icons at all...
DITTO!
Hello,
at ach time I create a fence, it's displayed in "ICON" mode and I wish to create and display by default in DETAILS mode because I create a lot of fences on my desktop
thks for your cooperation
Stackable Fences would be welcome
hello, try fences with HDR turned on, it has some bugs, like when you try to rename something it shows nothing, only when turning hdr off it shows what you are renaming.
I think that it's been mentioned before, but I'd just like to add my support for the request to add an 'On top of other Windows' feature, so that Fences roll out (from either top, bottom or side) over the top of any other windows already open. It's a pain having a fence roll down from the top of the screen, only to have the icon for program you need obscured by another window already onscreen.
This is a thread about what people want to see in next version of Fences and if people want to see the fence rise above open windows they write it. Some half explained answers about different desktop levels or someone saying what Fences is or not is not a feature request or an answer to request people have!
Any folder I place just visible on desktop or taskbar can be opened with "mouse over setting" and expanded over other windows but that also change all of Windows behavior on desktop and doesn't roll back the folder and that is a unwanted effect. That's one of several resons apps like Fences among other exists. To do that what Microsoft not given their user other than in limited functions back in the old Powertoys days.
My old freeware dock that is no longer developed and ended the support with Windows 7 can still open any folders or menus above if I so chose but if a folder is added it have to be a "click" to open but it will close after a app is started however it can't save files or shortcuts organized that way. But a file can at least be dropped as copy on a folder icon or opened by the app icon. And that's only because it can rise above and that without moving or minimize any open window!
Because of how it worked and supported ended and things got worse between Win 7 and 10 I ended up from on one Fences 2 licens to 3 licenses for Fences 3 both at home and work. But nothing big has changed after Fences 2 so I still use my old dock everywhere because of that last missing thing in Fences, it can open above!
So that is the only crucial function I care about for Fences 4 future on my Pc's even if there has been some other good request.
Fences [as it was/is designed] is NOT and CANNOT act like a Window or a Dock or anything you can think of that opens at different levels.
Desktop Icons are where Microsoft puts them.
They cannot be moved to any other level as they are then NOT "Desktop Icons".
Microsoft has ALWAYS located them at this level. Fences arranges them AT THIS LEVEL.
Requested Features cannot include every whim, no matter how many times someone asks...or how popular it might be.
I, TOO, want to see Fences accessible ABOVE open windows, but for that to happen Fences must be an ENTIRELY different program...ie. like a Dock....or like 'Control Panel' - a WINDOW with a bunch of icons on it.....BUT, and it's an Important 'BUT'.... the icons in the icon-view of Control Panel are NOT "Desktop Icons".
Simple answer...
If Fences could ever open above a Window...on top of a Window...it would not be Fences....
The answer is not 'half explained'. It is, however possibly only 'half understood'...
I should also add...Docks have been around since the dawn of Windows [and before], and have always been intended to open over active windows. They never had 'desktop icons' on them, only [perhaps] copies of those icons...as an alternate access to them.
Alternate shells to replace 'Explorer.exe' [the Windows Shell] have been around forever too...and various could actively be altered to locate icons etc of all sorts outside of Microsoft's shell design - that was the whole idea of alternate shells. You coded every aspect of what accessed the Kernel.
I spent many years dealing with the Z-Order of the GUI in Litestep and understood fully the effects of getting 'levels' wrong, and decades later am coding flight sim panels [2D] which also needs z-order settings to display components of a dashboard correctly, and make bits of them interactive...just like the icons on a Windows Desktop.
Typically there are 5 levels [maybe 6] in the Windows GUI. One of my cockpit panels has 11. Move any one of them and click-through fails...one way or another...
A TINY little option I would LOVE to see in any future update to Fences is :
When I dock a Fence to the top of my screen I DO NOT want the title bar dropping to the bottom of the Fence! So frustrating!
Yes it would be very nice to see the icons in the fences without have to close or resize your active windows. Without this functionality, I find fences almost useless.
Also I click activation on a icon would help alot
Please add the option to lock fences in place so they dont move while retaining the ability to double click lock them open by clicking on the title bar, otherwise you cant lock it open by double clicking without the risk of moving the fence. It would also make sense if when a bar snaps to the bottom or top of the page the bar stays close to the page and the body of the fence moves away from it. Having the title bar move away from you when you want to lock it open is annoying. You have to chase the title bar rather add the ability for the title bar to stay put and the fence content move out away for the title bar when snapped to bottom or top of page.
Having an option to move bars snap to the sides would be nice too but the first two things is more important for general functionality.
Very important in my case is to allow in Fences config to have option to select file manager which will be used when is Fences folder portal opened in.If I'm using another file manager than Windows default File Explorer Fences navigation works not - after clicking to any folder in folder portals always opened in that file manager. It will make Fences much more powerful.

The only feature for Fences I want is, that it doesn't slow down the Explorer/Desktop completely on most recent Windows 10 builds.
Tried it on several Win 10 installations (also in virtual machines) and it slows down everything on the desktop. Clicking icons sometimes takes up to 3 seconds and often I had to try clicking them several time until they got recognized/selected.
On Win8.1 it worked great but since I upgraded to Win10 1909 and 20H2 on another machine, this issue appears so the only way for me was to uninstall it.
I'd really like to use it again in the future as it (when it works) enhances my workflow quite a bit.
For information, I'm running a PC with a Core i9 9900k (9th Gen), an m.2 SSD, 32GB of Memory and an RTX 2080.
With Fences installed, working on the desktop feels like on my old PC with a Core i7 920 (1st Gen), a slow HDD and 8GB of DDR2 Memory.
I would like a setting that will allow a roll up fence (from bottom or top) to be above any other windows if selected. Now when I have 10 windows open and I'm looking for files in my roll-up fence it comes up beneath all the other windows and I have to move a bunch of windows out of the way to get to it.
Hi I would find it most useful to have the option for fences to memorise what order icons - for example games program shortcuts were added to a fence - because whenever I load a game that changes my graphics on my screen - all the icons in a fence change order - although remaining in the fence it is not good.N.B. selecting: Sort fence by: None DOES NOT ADDRESS THE ISSUE.It will still randomly move around icons within a fence after opening a game where the game has altered the graphics settings f the desktopsoftware like relcon only seems to remember locations & THE ORDER of files or icons which are not used in a fence.Maybe join forces with relcon?
