As we work on the next version of Fences, we are interested in getting your feedback on what you'd like to see.
We are particularly interested in features that will make Fences more useful in your work and enterprise environment.
Please comment below with any ideas and suggestions you might have.
Thanks!
New user:
I'd like the ability to freeze the labels so that you can't simply click on them to change them. When I go to move a fence it's natural to just go grab the label but of course that doesn't work.
Also have the ability to turn off sorting in fences so I can easier arrange my icons how I want.
Ian.
1. I have all my fences and folder portals collapsed to reduce clutter, a dozen or so. I would like to have a tool that helps to adjust a group of selected title-bars to a common width, and to arrange them on the desktop so they have the same vertical spacing among two adjacent bars.
2. Introduce a delay before a collapsed folder portal actually reveals. Otherwise, when the mouse pointer inadvertently hovers over the title-bars, their behaviour is so nervous.
3. Desktop pages: After switching a page, display the current page number for a little moment.
4. Introduce titles for the individual pages. Display the title after page switching.
I absolutely second this! Similar to the new iOS on how they allow you to hide the additional pages of icons!
Hi all, this app has soo much potential. What I wish for v4 is far better multi monitor support as the current version is utterly terrible at it. This is why I've never use it sadly.
In these times, where i have to remote to my computer at work ( where i installed fences ). I would love to be able to define a "Remote desktop view" i have three monitors at work but only two at home, So when I remote desktop, it gets all mess up. which is understandable, I modify my icons for the two monitors and save the preset, but when I tried to restore the snapshot, it didn't take. I would love to be able restore for remote desktop if possible since.. it seems now this would be my new normal
I think that's outside the Fences software and personally I wouldn't want it.
I do agree with that.
You know what would be challenging but i would love to see? Some kind of integration with Steam (or even better GOG - as it aggregates every gaming platform in one) that would allow to create fence with game covers from your library on said platforms.
Ugh, no? If you just want more customization, adding images as background might be plausible, but if you want Steam integration, you seem to forget that the main source of distribution is their own server and Steam is just an afterthought. The software probably should fully work without Steam...
What does "steam being aftertought" have to do with anything what i just said? I'm not talking about Stardock/Steam merger here, but about portal to game library. As i said, it doesn't need to even be Steam - GOG would be much better choice as it integrates all the gaming platforms in one.
Here's quick mockup how it could look like.
I see there was a small misunderstanding, but this is even more unlikely! Fences is not, from what I understand, a desktop gadget, it's a tool to help organize the Windows Desktop icons. What you suggested can only work with Steam/GOG integration, and as I said, the app has to work outside of Steam/GOG. What you want is outside of the scope of Fences, and is a separate product of it's own!
On the Fences Configuration, Sorting & Organizing, you can create a file sized based rule. I'd like to be able to set the size manually (with a text box) instead of choosing from a predetermined list. But more importantly, it doesn't seem like you can send those items to a Folder Portal which is a shame. I'd like to keep the desktop clean from any big files, so it would be great if either they were placed in Folder Portal instead, or sent to a predetermined location and have a shortcut appear on the desktop in their stead
The ability to pin specific fence(s) to specific Windows 10 Virtual Desktops. The capability appears to be almost there now. When you add a Desktop Page and apply a Fence to it, then switch to a different Windows Virtual Desktop that Fence stays there and is the only one listed.
This requires double navigating to get back and forth from the Desktop Pages and Virtual Desktops which eliminates the efficiency gains sought. Hopefully connecting the two fully, is on the Stardock Radar.
Thread is now 1,5 years and still going strong.
one-click to launch the icons please...
That exists in Windows itself already:

Feature requested and feature delivered!
No I only want it in Fences not all of windows
is there an approximate date when a new version enters the Stardock deck?
You can probably do that with a AutoHotkey script tbh
What we need from Fences is the ability to have single click on a per fence basis. MS should have it on a per folder basis but they don’t. Fences could do this and would allow us to have the equivalent to hotspots on selected fences.
With MS windows it is all or nothing. What we want is to be able to have single click inside selected fences.
I don't really think it's within the possibilities. If Microsoft requires a specific click/open action on one desktop icon it will apply to all. Standardization of input/response is important to the shell's functioning...
A 'stay on top' capability for all fences to open over other windows would be a great feature. I would use the product much more with this. THX
With Fences v4 wish list do we have to assume no update will come to Fences V3. We'll have to wait and probably buy V4 just to have our highly requested features incorporated and those experience breaking bug fixed.Vertical fences are requested for months and even year. Same with the bug about the auto-layout of windows
