Is it possible to install Fences without admin privileges?
My company has taken away admin privileges from the ignorant masses who might do ridiculous things to our laptops like change our timezone when traveling.
I am able to install apps from the Windows 10 store without any problem.
I can also install programs (like Chrome) from a downloaded installer EXE that attempt an install with admin but, failing that, offer an install option without admin privileges.
No, it is not.
I have a related question.... When I execute Fences4_setup_sd.exe from an elevated command prompt (my user does not have admin rights, but I can run a command prompt as admin) the installer insists on elevating itself, even though it was launched "with admin rights" and hence the install will not work. Is there a switch or something I can use with the installer to stop this and thus get it to work?
..not exactly - it was launched by something with Admin rights. That is not an 'ipso facto, everything it launches that requests admin rights should be bypassed'.
Assuming you are an admin, you could install it under your account and Fences would be available to any other account on the PC. There is also the option to install Fences with your admin privileges, while logged into the restricted account, but that is outside of the scope of what I can directly help you with here.
That said, some material that may help:

To be clear, I have a "managed" device, hence my user is not in the local administrators group, but it can launch a terminal with admin (by special request) and in the past I have used this to launch installers that needed admin rights, I believe process rights are inherited and so this works. Some installers though seem to demand a "confirm admin rights, UAC" prompt whether they are launched from an elevated session or "Run As Admin", hence why I was asking if the Fences installer had an option to not prompt, or there was even an alternative installer. Without this I will be unable to use Fences in the future, so less licenses needed by me.
Thanks for your help though, that is appreciated.
I would venture to say 'most installers that integrate \ deeply interact with Window's core functions require admin rights'. Most of our popular apps do, Fences being integrated into the Windows File Explorer process.
As you noted, that is another way to bypass the prompt, to turn down \ off UAC. If you are confident you have admin privileges with your command prompt, and they are being passed to anything it runs, it would follow that you could adjust UAC (at least for that install) and not have it show.
This all assumes you still want the subsequent install dialogs to show for the user, where you want them to participate in the installation. While all still holds, that you will need to run it from an elevated command prompt, you can opt for the silent install with the /s option. This process has been available for several years now

Hope that helps.
I am just trying to install an update, from 4.21 to 4.22 for myself, nobody else uses the laptop. Mostly to stop Fences keeping prompting me to update! Sadly it seems the way Fences installs is not compatible with corporate policies
You can also stop the update notice:

Done, thank you
