Just curious what everybody thought of this new series on U.S. TV, "Orville", with Seth MacFarlane. The greatest Star Trek show on TV since Jean Luc. Okay, don't argue with me. Just shut up and agree.
I agree, lame jokes should not be used to disguise other lameness. But in all fairness, no one is forcing him to hold to any cookie-cutter formula. It's like if Stardock made some architecture changes to Galciv4 and people said, "That's not TBS," or "That's not 4X". My answer: who cares.
Nope, nobody is holding him to any formula, but you'd think the aim would be to produce some quality television, and most are saying it is far from that.
So who cares? Well discerning viewers would I'm sure, and the network if ratings aren't good.
Pursuing the point further because it relates to Stardock's choices.
Just on Masterchef, one of the contestants served Gordon Ramsay a seafood custard and a tiramisu. Gordon Ramsay said, "this is not tiramisu. It's not got this and this and this...," and "This is not custard. It doesn't have the right texture." That chef ended up winning the whole thing.
Artists need that liberty not to be fit into a box. If it doesn't work, absolutely they will take criticism (another chef in Hell's Kitchen tried serving a peach on steak. He got runner-up).
Consensus is over-rated. In an case, I don't see a consensus. So far here there are a couple that won't watch (you can't count them), a few who say it sucks (how many of those actually watched a whole ep?), and the majority who say it's not bad. Not great but not bad.
Anyone remember how lame Star Trek itself was when it started? But it also produced 'The Corbomite Maneuver', 'City on the Edge of Forever', and Tribbles.
I saw the first two episodes of Star Trek:Discovery, and it is good.
Now we're watching Discovery twice. We did not do that with Orville.
I started a ST:D thread. It deserves its own.
Treatment is available for those, DMF.
Unless you're allergic to antibiotics. Yep, that's the problem with using communal remotes...
.... Seriously Tainted Digits
Ep. 4
Redux: For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky
spoiler:
Gratuitous Liam Neeson
Episode 4: This time he flips around religion on its head. I like it. Not sure which I like more: Discovery or Orville. But I like both.
Think I favour STD over Orville..... but then I was always a [proper] Trekkie fan.
Last episode was pretty damn stellar. It shows that it was a veteran Star Trek director handling it, but the writing (even the jokes) were on point too. Apparently, the next episode is going to be directed by Jonathan Frakes!
Isaac: "I understand males take great pride in their anatomy?"
Exes: "Sometimes/Yes."
Missed that. I was too busy ogling Charlize Theron. We know she gives good villain!
DMF, just curious: re your avatar, isn't that a pic of John Taggart the actor who played Frankenstein's monster in a 70's sitcom?
Don't recall the name of it anymore but I'd sure like to get a-hold of it again.
No, it's actor Jack Elam who famously played a proctologist in the movies.
Any chance you mean Fred Gwynne, who played Herman Munster in the '60 sitcom? He also co-starred in the sitcom the theme song of which I use as my ring tone, Car 54 Where Are You?
I felt like tgey ruined 100 had to stop watching that. I didnt like firefly.
Yeah, you're right! I was thinking of Jack Elam but got him confused with John Taggart. As I recall, they were both in Wagon Train, so maybe that's where I got mixed up.
As for Jack Elam playing Frankenstein's monster, it was a mid-70's sitcom about a guy who inherits a bed and breakfast from a long lost relative..... Dr Frankenstein. Anyhow, Jack Elam is the caretaker and the good Dr's creation and is quite funny in the role. I just can't remember the name of the show now, but I'd sure like to see it again.
In 1979 he was cast as the Frankenstein monster in the CBS sitcom Struck by Lightning, but the show was cancelled after only three episodes.
No wonder I never saw it.
Jack was all over TV and movie westerns, usually as a badman. One of my favorite roles was the opening of Once Upon A Time In The West, where he has a low key gunfight with a fly before getting killed by Charles Bronson. Great movie.
Ah, Struck By Lightning, eh! Now maybe I can find it somewhere. Thing is, I recall more than 3 episodes being aired here in Oz. As I remember, it aired for around 3 months and we got around 12 - 13 episodes, but that may have been due to the channel here purchasing the entire [filmed] series.
I liked it. It really is sort of a kind of kinder gentler family guy mode with a dash of Galaxy Quest and Guardians of the Galaxy. FX are not bad or too cheezy but the cardboard acting are right out of year 1 of Star Trek come on its a sci-fi comedy with some of the hooks we used to love and goofy too I mean for God's sake the ships name is the Orville!
Obviously named for Orville Redenbacher.
Likely. After all, only 6(?) Firefly eps were broadcast here, at least on the original schedule, though Fox paid for 13(?).
Yeah, we got the full series of 13 episodes on first airing.... and I don't care what anybody says, Firefly was one of the best sci.fi shows ever, if not the best. It was unique, totally original and had something for everyone: sci.fi; drama; comedy; suspense; crime; romance and some great characters... not to mention the great storylines.
Now that 'd be something! Nathan Fillion and the original cast coming back to do another series... or three.
I enjoyed Galaxy Quest as a one-off humorous "Star Trek" type movie. I'm not sure I can get through The Orville. So far, two episodes, and they can't seem to decide if they want a serious story line or a vehicle for jokes. I'll give it a few more viewings. While the story lines have gotten better the third episode is taken right from the pages of recent news. Not very creative.
