Good day Everyone!I just recently updated to Windows 10 Creators Update. After the update, I'm experiencing a sort of delay whenever I clicked on anything on my desktop. Clicking the icons, right clicking. Everything has a delay on it.So I tried disabling Fences and voila! Instant response. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Fences, but performance is still the same.
Using Fences 3.0.4.12Any help or suggestions would be truly appreciated. Thank you!
GOOD LUCK finding it! Stardock has absolutely no desire to provide you with a working version of their software. Refer to my discussion in this thread on this, and how they ignore requests for links to download previous versions.
No desire? I have no problem providing it, elbleins:http://sd.stardock.com/Support/Software/Fences/Fences_3.03_setup_sd.exe
Just know that there are subsequent fixes for things in later versions that you are bound to see:https://www.stardock.com/products/fences/history
I also cant shut off the update notices you will see.
Wow, this thread. Reminds me of late 90s forum bickering. Not sure if I like the cringe-worthy in-your-face company rep responses of back then or canned corporate handwaving sans action of today more.
I don't have time to troubleshoot Fences, but I'll contribute what I can in this post. Used Fences way back in v1.0 days, but eventually uninstalled it and just came back (Humble Bundle last month).
- Installed 3.0.5 and got the slow down after a couple days.
Symptoms:- Resembled a memory leak - increasing delay in response across ~3 hours.- CPU load high, not unusually high - 1 or 8 'cores' (4 core w/ hyperthreading) @ 15-20%. Could hear my fans spinning, but definitely not at max.- Checking Process Explorer, no obvious issues - memory of the svchost attached to Fences was slightly higher (~35MB private, usually <20MB), but no CPU or IO spikes.
Troubleshooting steps tried: - Killing explorer had no effect on the problem.- Shutting down every background program and stopping all third party services had no effect. Hardware and background programs listed at the bottom. - Standard uninstall fences, reboot, delete remnants, reinstall sequence. No effect.- Disabling Fences within the options (I assume it runs that ps1 script?) immediately resolved the slowdown.
State at the time (I think):- 4 standard fences and 4 folder portals. Fences on Display 2 and portals on Display 3 (triple display setup).- - - Standard fences: File counts were <25 each, a couple different views used, autosorting rules on (none custom), always visible @ 20%, fade to 90% on mouse over.- - - Folder Portals: 1 portal had ~10 files. 3 portals had ~10 subfolders, ~20 files at root, 30-40 files per subfolder. All set to details view, navigation enabled, and roll-up tabs feature enabled.- Desktop pages disabled, subset of fences and portals set to not hide with desktop double click, all snapping and spacing enabled (0 px), stored per screen layouts, - Parts I'm fuzzy on - The views (swapped around between classic and medium for the fences and just about all of them for the portals. Exact file numbers varied +/- 10.
I did get things usable again. Responsiveness feels a bit more sluggish than without Fences (but we're talking <0.5 sec increase in icon selection time).
Not sure what squashed it, but it was definitely not disabling a third party program or Windows/driver update. I disabled the roll-up fences feature entirely, moved all fences to the same display, removed 1 portal, and reduced the number of files/folders actually on the desktop to <10 per fence. All fences set to classic view, all portals set to List. 2/3 portals allow navigation.
My suspicions were related to the navigation and details view. One or the other might get stuck updating or a file might get locked and set off a cascade. Or the roll up animation might not have exited cleanly or caused some trouble for explorer (generating thumbnails, etc.) I also thought it could be something related to the triple desktop setup - I know the displays can be enumerated differently between Windows and Nvidia, which could have caused some odd condition.
I've noticed that since performance improved, whenever I resize or move a fence or portal, the entire fence background and border disappear during the move and reappear on mouse1 release. Icons animate as if the fence is there, it just never renders. That was not the case when I was having trouble.
Hardware: i7-6700k, Asus Z270 (only drivers, no extra utils), 32GB, 512GB m.2 NVME (boot)/1TB m.2 NVME/6TB HDD, GTX 980Ti, 2x24" 1920x1200 (L and R), 1x4k (C), HTC Vive, Corsair keyboard (config util not running), Logitech G900 (LGS running). All drivers up to date and no changes during the problem period.
Software (relevant - often running, background, service, or running at time of problem): OneDrive, OneNote, Teamviewer, Plex, DropBox, Comodo Firewall (only basic, no sandboxing or other AV add ons), Resilio Sync, Rainmeter, LGS, Acrobat Pro, VS2017, VSCode, Notepad++, Chocolatey, Chrome, Intel IME, Intel Graphics, Nvidia drivers (no "Experience" installed). Windows 10 Pro 1709 (stable, non-Insiders). All up to date within 2 weeks on problem period.
Plenty of other stuff installed, but I wrangle my processes and services pretty harshly, though less so for OS components (but things like Mozilla maintenance service and Steam services at either disabled or set to manual).
So, that's what I can offer. I wish I had delved into it deeper when the problem popped up, but I didn't have time. There are probably MANY more people with this problem that have simply stopped using Fences or lurking, like I was. I came here and thought, "Oh, good. There's a long thread on the topic. I can't add much besides a 'me too' so I'll leave them to handle it."
Lastly, I want to respond to the 'beta comment', too. Win 10 can be a bit janky, but if there was ever a software type, besides drivers, where I would expect the developers to be on the Insiders Fast Ring, it would be stuff that hooks deeply into the UI. Even if MS explicitly stated they were shipping beta level software, still, a massive number of your customers will be updating (whether they want to or not), so that simply becomes your reality. Blaming MS doesn't make your software work better for me, and since this has been going on since April, I'm far more inclined to think the problem is with Stardock and not MS. They've fixed thousands of bugs and added hundreds of features, yet somehow none have had an impact on this problem with Fences. Even more damning is that going back to old versions resolves the problem, so who's shipping the beta software?
This isn't Object Desktop, which is arguably 99.9% for fun and efficiency be damned. Fences is more of a productivity tool and if it makes me less productive, that's like releasing Object Desktop with support for only hideous skins (biting tongue, biting tongue).
Good luck on the bug hunt.

Will that version (3.03) ask me for a key? I have the Steam version and don't have a key to enter in a standard install..
I am afraid not - Steam versions will always be the latest and that is 3.05.
Thank you for finally providing an 'official' link to a previous version of Fences! Since you said you (and I'm assuming Stardock) have "no problem" providing this, why is this not readily available for all Stardock customers?
Where can we find other previous versions of Fences and other Stardock software? To see if I could download Fences 3.01 I tried replacing the last '3' with a '1' for instance, but it does not link to anything - it was worth a try. Simply, it would be nice to provide your customers with a place to download previous versions, e.g. http://sd.stardock.com/Support/Software/Fences/.
Thanks for providing the link, and for your consideration from a customer.
Update on Lagging Desktop
I was suffering the same issue. 3.05 update addressed it. Thank You
Kevin
For sound reasons, actually.
We don't want people on older versions that have known issues with subsequent versions of Windows. While this one, 3.03 works for some to solve a glaring one (lag), there are others they will see from not being current. Trading one problem for another (others) is not a good idea.
Also, we had hoped to have found what the issue was sooner.
While I sympathise with any that do have the issue, as I have detailed, the clients with the issue are in the vast vast minority. There is something you all have in common that we have not been able to find or reproduce.
Easily reproducible for you, I have no doubt - it's easily reproducible for anyone on this thread.
That said, why don't the other 99% see it is the question - what is unique about this group? It's a question we have not yet been able to answer.
I also have this issue, my desktop has become extremely delayed, and Stardock won't help via technical support...I also cannot uninstall Fences 3, windows cannot locate the uninstall file(s). I even tried Revo Uninstaller, and that program could not find the files either, even on a forced uninstall it wouldn't do anything. Two questions, first, where can I find Fences 3.03? I wish to try and install that version. I cannot find it on this site or any others. Second, has anyone had this uninstall issue?
I have not read all of this thread but did "skim" for about 20 minutes. I too am having this lag problem and it's been going on since a while. In my case, this all started when I upgraded my monitor + went dual screen. Changes made: 2560x1440 on display 1 using DisplayPort, 1440x900 on display 2 HDMI.
I also have a bug where my icons inside the fences lose their saved positions if I turn off (power off button on monitor) my DisplayPort monitor. I do have store fences on a per-screen-resolution basis selected (useful when I Remote Desktop).
I have a second computer running the exact same HW, SW and driver versions, exept that one is 1980x1080 single HDMI display and no lag problem. And yes, both are on identical NVidia cards.
To me, my lag problem seemed obvious it is related to DisplayPort connection and just kept waiting for a fences update. Another reason that made me think the displayport is the culprit is the fact that I run another software, Atomic Alarm Clock v5.91, which crashes if I turn that monitor off.
I did have the lag problem on older Fences version(s), as I'm sure I did update Fences once or twice since it started (plugged in new DP monitor) but can't tell which versions they were.
So anyway, my 2-cents right now is: DisplayPort related and/or dual+ screen related?
Apples says Oranges is using a poor analogy
That said, I may have set something up for next week that may help us. If it bears fruit (pun intended), this is the first place I will come.
Like everyone else in this thread, I'm also here to report the exact same problem.
I've tolerated it so far, but it's getting really annoying.
Every time I try to double-click a link from my desktop in a fence, it will hide the fences (Due to the hide settings enabled).
I've tolerated this for a long time, and gotten used to right-click->open instead, which is really annoying.
Like others it's always easier to accept/tolerate bugs and expect an updated version later. I've been annoyed by this issue for a several months, and just recently resubscribed to OD, expecting a fix at some point. So now after several months I finally decide to see if there is others with this problem, and low and behold.
I'm here to voice that I'm also one of the "few" users who have this problem, but have just not been here to tell about it before, so now I have, now you know there is at least 1 more user here with the same problem.
I don't know what I can provide of information that is worth anything.
GFX: Nvidia GTX 1060
Win10 Pro: 1703 Build 15063.726 (Creators update I guess?)
Fences 3.0.5.11
Hoping sdRohan have something that might solve the problem for us
I have a VM from someone that has the issue and it's in the hand of the lead developer.
Will let you all know when I do.
I'm thinking it's a combination of display size, number of items, and some type of Windows directory info update. It only shows up when I copy a decent number of items to the desktop or a subfolder on it. Some GUI elements take 20 seconds to show while others will only draw an outline, then pause for 10 seconds, unless I move the mouse outside an approximately 1920x1080 area (triple monitor setup, 1920x1200 left and right, center 4k)
If I run SysInternals Process Monitor while it's happening, I get entries every 10 seconds for a failed registry query (HKCU\Software\Stardock\Debug, File not found), which coincides with display elements updating (menus drawn, etc.). Not sure if that helps the devs or if anyone else is seeing it, but thought I'd put it out there.
I've tried deleting pages from my desktop, and eliminating the vast majority of my icons. Same issue occurs. So it's not the amount of icons, I know that for a fact.
I've spent upwards of 50 hours changing settings around for display, personalization, etc.I even temporally overclocked my PC to see if that changed anything, which it did. When overclocking from 3.8 to 4.2Ghz, I noticed a very slight speedup in selecting icons.
I am talking VERY slight. And before saying it's the PC, I run a very clean ship, this is a workstation,I run business operations from it for a music studio. i7 3930K CPU, 32GB RAM @ 1600Mhz, OCZ RevoDrive 3 X2 PCIe OS drive, etc. Running Windows 7 64-Bit Ultimate
Maybe this will help you guys figure out the problem. In the meantime, can anyone point me to the earlier version of Fences 3? I would like to install the 3.03 version.
Oh man, this thread. Subbing to this, I've been having lag issues like CRAZY and I'm glad I'm not the only one.
For the record, I'm running a dual monitor setup (2560x1440 144hz with DisplayPort and 1920x1080p 60hz HDMI) with an i5 2500k, 16GBs of RAM and a GTX 980 running Windows 10 (1709)

Now I really have a problem. I've used the "Purge_Fences.bat file as instructed to uninstall Fences 3. My fences are all gone now. I tried the Reboot, and was prompted to setup Fences 3.04, which I did not want to do, but I cannot use the Fences 3.03 setup file now, I get the error message
"The uninstall executable file could not be written out because it is already in use. Close all running uninstalls and click Retry to continue. Click cancel to abort."
There are no running uninstalls in the task manager, I've gone over it very thoroughly.
There are two Stardock services running, but I cannot stop them, access denied.
Update, I was able to use MSCONFIG to stop fences from starting on reboot. Just go to your "STARTUP" tab in MSCONFIG, and uncheck Fences. When you reboot, run the Fences 3.03 startup file, and it will install. THIS FIXED MY ISSUE. Stardock, if you are watching, you need to give the Purge \ Reinstallation fix to everyone who has this problem. The issue is your new updated versions, not anything else. My Fences is working PERFECTLY now, no delays, not a single problem. Fences 3.03 is the END ALL SOLUTION.
Not for everyone. Some of us are on 3.03 and we either dont feel the difference or its just an improvement, but the lag is still there.
But I agree is worth to use 3.03 if someone hasnt tried already.
Not really as subsequent version fixes will be a problem for some / many:

Well it worked for me
Just bought Fences 3.0 from Stardock because with my Steam version I couldn't install earlier versions.
v3.03 did not fix the problem for me.
I did notice that by using my keyboard arrows, I can move around selecting the icons on my desktop very fast. Then, using the mouse it's very, very slow as this thread has stated. So, I am wondering if it is a mouse issue? Drivers? Mouse Settings conflict? I shut down my Logitech Gaming software, and disabled some stock windows mouse settings. That didn't help.
I have a Logitech 602 gaming mouse. What do you all have?
Corsair gaming mouse. My mouse is now actually moving very slowly across the screen. Weird.
I've only had this problem <10 times, but today it happened immediately after booting and running a couple updates. I ran:
Windows update - just had the usual AV definitions update
Microsoft store - no updates
Chocolatey - updated ConEmu and MKVToolnix
PortableApps - a few updates, sry I forget which, but 5-6 small utilities
LiberKey - QDir and NewFileTime updates
Problem started after WU and MSS updaters were dismissed and during Chocolatey and PA updates. Problem persists with no open installers, consoles, msiexecs, etc. None of the updated programs or updaters are running. None of the updated programs were launched. 2 desktop icons were added via Chocolatey's updates. No other changes, no updates between this boot and the previous.
Other processes/programs running: Flux, Resilio Sync, DropBox, OneDrive, Comodo FW (firewall only), EarTrumpet, Minibin, Rainmeter, Logitech Gaming Software, Realtek audio manager, VMWare services installed with their free viewer, Intel GPU services (integrated graphics driver), NVidia drivers/container services (installed GPU). Telemetry services for Nvidia and Intel disabled, no Geforce Experience installed, all displays running off the NVidia GPU.
Guess I'll uninstall and check back in 6 months. This seems to be the experience I always have with Stardock software, unfortunately.
