Ive run Win10 since it came out. I had some software compatibility issues, a bit of a learning curve, but over all it has been fine. I dont have the newest hardware so maybe thats why? I remember windows 95.. That was some terrible software after coming to if from OS2 WARP. OS2 Warp was Win7 before MS had Win95..
I remember when the first 1gb hard drive came out. Radio Shack had it on sale for $600.00 US. A tower, keyboard and mouse but no monitor. Today that amount can get you a brand new, not very high end though, laptop with 500 times that much.
I avoid these hassles by checking for updates every other day. I get to them before they get to me.
You can avoid that up to a point if you set your internet connection to 'metered' in 'settings'. It won't totally prevent it, because Win 10 will still deliver important patches, etc, but will not download other updates unless you check for updates and manually download them yourself.
This sounds weird. Don't think Android and iOS do this, but I don't know for sure. What if the laptop is in a bag and the whole thing catches fire? There is no way to ensure proper ventilation if it turns on itself at random times.
Maybe if Windows 10 is properly shut down (fast boot disabled), this won't happen. Might be that Windows 10 programs UEFI to turn on the laptop. If this is the case, reinstalling in Legacy Mode might take care of the problem.
This sounds dangerous, what if the laptop is on an airplane? 500 people died because Windows 10 wanted to install updates on a laptop in a suitcase… We have heard about exploding devices before. All it takes is placing the battery a little too close to the CPU and/or inadequate ventilation. No device has proper ventilation if it's packed down and thermal throttling only kicks in at 70-90 degrees Celsius which might be too late in a suitcase.
A device that turns on itself I would put in the trash can for my own safety (if it can't be fixed that is). I have never had a device power on itself, that would freak me out. Well, I had a printer that ran some selftest once a month. It was pretty annoying, but could be fixed by unplugging it from the wall. I made sure to buy a different brand next time.
My mindset is: I'm human. I'm superior to machines. If a machine is causing trouble, it will get unplugged/replaced whatever. The way society is going, we are going to have to fight the machines (and their masters) sooner or later. Luckily it's easy to kill a machine (just remove power/battery). It might get more difficult in the future. When they expand human rights to Artificial Intelligence you might go to jail for unplugging a device. Hopefully most of us are gone before that happens.
Some good points there, anotherside, particularly with regard to a device exploding or catching fire on a plane. For mine, any band all updates should be done when the device is already turned on by the user... not when MS wants to wake the machine and download/install updates via Scheduled Maintenance at some ungodly hour in the am when most users are in bed asleep.
Sadly, I have not found a way as yet to turn off/disable Scheduled Maintenance, but it is a major issue for mine, in darkness and doing stuff to peoples machines without consent or even their knowledge. Many was the time when I shut down my HP 2-in-1 at bed time, only to wake to find MS had borked it with unnecessary/unneeded updates to things that worked perfectly well beforehand.
Yes, Microsoft has taken its 'big brother' attitude way too far with Win 10 and its somewhat questionable 'features'.
It's an old joke.......note the number of floppies needed..
I had a floppy nightmare once, so I went to my doctor the next day, told him what happened and asked for some Viagra... just in case the dream came true.
He told me not to worry, that it was all in my head.
While on the subject of floppies, I have a box of then stashed away somewhere with all my bits and pieces. Don't know why, I'll likely not ever use them again, and I do have a drive as well, so it's not that I can't, more that they're somewhat antiquated nowadays.
Shoot, even DVD drives are a bit antiquated and are being used less and less because just about everything can be downloaded from the net these days. Discs aren't needed like they once were to install programs and etc.
I have a BluRay drive in each of my main machines, so that I can create hard copies of things I don't want to lose to HDD failure and the like, but I can't remember when I last used one to install anything, such is the availability of programs for download from the net.
I have OS/2 Warp 4.1 on CD and I also have OpenStep for Intel 4.1 with the developer tools disk..... $$$
It would be nice to see an OS/2 Warp theme that is compatible with Windows 10.
You definitely right Hogged my system to the max and screwed up my Win7. Trying to tweak it to my needs as I know Win7 will be a thing of the past. But 3 more years maybe we all can kick'em in the cyberarse and get it somewhat back to a useable system.
So I’m installing Creators Update on a machine. Why do I feel like I’m working for Microsoft... Hopefully it goes smooth, if not I want my money back!!! I'm a little excited, don't know why, but I am. First I thought it was an update straight from the Creator, but seems like it's called Creators Update. Just a moment... it says... soon it's here.
I like the privacy settings screen. This is an improvement. It's pretty late, but I'm going to take a quick look and see what I find.
Does this only happen when computer is connected to AC? If it happens when disconnected from AC it’s both dangerous and drains the battery. Seems unlikely that Windows 10 would wake the computer when only battery is present, now that I think about it.
If you have Windowblinds, make sure it's at 10.6 or above before installing the Creator's Update.
It only happened when connected to the power, but then the machine was always connected to power back then. Now that I've got my AMD big beastie the 2-in-1 doesn't see much use. I'll also have my Intel big beastie running in the next few days, when a Crucial 525 gig M.2 SSD arrives, so it'll see even less use.
Is the Creator's Update labeled as such when it shows up?
I looked that up a couple days ago, and IIRC it is version 1703. So maybe look for that as well. My test computer is still on the previous version and haven't seen anything about it getting updated yet, so no actual experience with that myself.
Thanks for the reminder. I read about that. WindowBlinds wasn't installed on that machine.
I wasn't talking about WB; what I meant was if the upgrade wouldn't go smooth I wanted Microsoft to pay back all the money that I didn't pay for Windows 10… didn't really make sense. However, upgrading Windows 10 can be seen as a cost; time and risk involved.
I'm not sure about this Windows as a service model for production machines. And I use the word “production machines” loosely. Any machine that is supposed to perform useful tasks, any Windows machine really.
I think Microsoft is working on making Windows more modular and easier to upgrade. Still Windows 10 is a big OS. That's why I chose to make a Creators Update USB-stick and upgrade from that.
Microsoft has talent and money, but with Windows 10 I feel their goal is set too high. A one-size-fits-all OS that is continuously updated and used by a billion people on all kinds of hardware. It's no small task to pull off.
....and their 'success' proves that....
Yes, mass hypnotism can do amazing things....
...... not to mention forcing it down users throats.
